WHAT age were bitch owners told to spay?
Our vet said 5months pre having a season as she is so small?
I don’t know if it’s JUST cos she’s small or what?
They said that season enlarges nipples abd blood vessels around there and more dangerous to spay then.
Contrary advice to any other bitch owner I know BUT she’s absolutely tiny and likey to hit 5 lbs max as an adult

Wolfiefan · 07/01/2018 23:03

Mine is a giant breed and the advice is not to spay until 2 at the earliest. She needs the hormones to grow and develop properly.
If they do a lap spay the nipple thing shouldn't be an issue.

GooodMythicalMorning · 08/01/2018 00:01

I thought they had to have had at least one season but it may be different for different breeds.

Hope all pups are doing well. BiteyDog went back to daycare for the first time in 3 weeks and he is out for the count on the sofa. He's a very very happy but shattered dog Grin. Don't think I will be hearing from him tonight.

Wolfiefan · 08/01/2018 18:33

Mine had her booster jabs today. Now shattered. (I'm reading scare stories on FB about lepto and shitting myself!) Shock

BiteyShark · 08/01/2018 18:38

Wolfie BiteyDog had his boosters and kennel cough vaccination just before Xmas and seemed fine after but tired but then he is always tired after a vet visit. Are you worried about the boosters or the disease itself?

Wolfiefan · 08/01/2018 18:40

Boosters. I've heard of some truly terrifying reactions. Dogs that have died or would die if given vaccinations again.
But then if I don't vaccinate the diseases could kill her.
I'm a worrier!
I don't do lepto 4 and have refused Bravecto.

Abhorsen · 08/01/2018 18:41

I’m in the process of getting signed up for junior Puppy classes, we definitely need some kind of focus as there was no classes after our Puppy ones finished due to Christmas and I’m noticing a difference.

Also in a stress as dog walker has rearranged her hours so is now picking dpup up later, and I’m not comfortable leaving him that long so trying to think of a solution while fighting off a cold (so brain isn’t functioning at all 🙈)

Bitey - when you have the half day daycare does biteydog end up with two walks? Or just one?

Sofabitch · 08/01/2018 18:45

I love reading this post even if I dont have time to post often. Sofapup gave us all a fright and an expensive trip to the vet this weekend when he suddenly came down with extreme D&V!

Any tips to stop him barking at every single sound! Plus i think that him and another dog across the street have started a 2am conversation!

His favorite spot is here by the window..but he barks at every leaf and goes crazy if we put the nets down trying to look out!

Sofabitch · 08/01/2018 18:48

Abhorsen yes I think that it seriously contributing here. Puppy social classes ended before Christmas and we start foundation 1 next week. But thats almost a month of no new training to focus on

Wolfiefan · 08/01/2018 18:48

Oh no. Hope he's ok now. Can you physically block his access? (Move furniture?)

BiteyShark · 08/01/2018 18:49

We do vaccinate BiteyDog with L4 but he goes knee deep in mud, through the forest and swims in the grimmest of ponds which live stock use.

The thing is you will hear of reactions but you won't hear of all the dogs that are vaccinated that have no reaction at all. I am sure WolfieDog will be up tomorrow bouncing about and giving you grief but I won't say don't worry because it's hard not to when it's your pup.

Sofabitch · 08/01/2018 18:51

The lounge has windows both ends. And he doesn't seem to mind which window. My daughter was with him today and she said he barked for 5 hours! Only settled when she forced him to nap by crating him.

Sofabitch · 08/01/2018 18:53

Vaccination reactions are rare but so scary. My mums cat is allergic to the vaccinations. It was scary to watch.

We've been alright here. Although got vaccinated at 11 and 15 weeks which is later than most.

Wolfiefan · 08/01/2018 18:53

I'm sure she will be buggering about at training tomorrow!
Sofa your neighbours must be very pissed off! Can you block his view? Opaque film? Nets or blinds? Room divider across the window with a blanket over it?

BiteyShark · 08/01/2018 18:54

Abhorsen we are doing slightly more than half day care at the moment but not full. This means we pay a bit more but get two one hours walks rather than the one that he was previously having when it was just the half day.

How long is he being left on his own before he gets picked up? BiteyDog is left for 2.5 hours.

BiteyShark · 08/01/2018 18:57

Sofabitch BiteyDog can be very vocal. When I am working at home I put the tv or radio on in the background so he doesn't bark at every noise he hears. If he barks at the opaque doors he gets moved away until he is quiet. If it persists I shove him behind the baby gate for a bit until he quietens down

ZivaDiva · 08/01/2018 19:17

Took Zivapup to puppy socialisation today, he had a fabulous time. Lots of play,a bit of walking around changing direction all the time and a recall across the hall off lead with 2 other pups standing nearby. I was so proud of him. I know that come 6 months or so he’ll stick two fingers up at me and become completely deaf but meanwhile I’ll bask in the glow.

Abhorsen · 08/01/2018 20:46

Dpup can bark a lot sometimes, mainly in the garden when he hears other people (or just when he feels like it). He was a lot better before winter as i would go into the garden as well and anytime i heard a noise he might have barked at i would distract him (treats, toys, making him sit or paw etc) and he was a lot better. Unfortunately the cold and darkness mean i got lazy and stopped going outside with him and the last couple of weeks he's been barking a lot more so I'm going to have to brave the ice and start going out with him again and hope i can get it under control.

For daycare he is left 3 to 3.5 hours before he is picked up, usually 3 but with bad weather it can be up to half an hour later. Its two days a week and he gets an hour off lead walk then i collect him on my way home from work. The new times mean he'll be left for 4 hours, up to 4.5 if anything goes wrong and i just feel like its too long, i either need to find a new dog walker (but i really like this one and dpup likes her and she did give me loads of notice about changing but i just stuck my head in the sand) or see if she'll take him for both group walks so he'd be out for two hours. They're off lead and its only two days a week but two hours in one day seems like a lot for him (he's 6.5 months). He has done it a couple of times when I've had extra days and the timings have just meant he went out twice. How old was bitey when he started the two hour walking in a day?

BiteyShark · 08/01/2018 20:54

We have only just started the two one hours walks so he was around 13 months so he could easily take the exercise. At your pups age I think it would have been too much as he runs about like a loon. Honestly I think leaving pup for that length of time would also worry me as well Sad. I can understand your dilemma as BiteyDog loves going to daycare and I would hate it if he couldn't go there anymore.

BiteyShark · 08/01/2018 20:56

Well done ZivaPup. Even when they stick two fingers up when they are a teenager if you can crack the recall now at least you know it will be back when they grow up Grin

Abhorsen · 08/01/2018 21:00

I think i'll end up with two walks a day with a different walker instead of the day care :-(

Not many people around here do day care and a lunchtime walk isn't enough. I've got a friend whose dogs get half an hour in the morning then longer mid afternoon as they can't go on group walks at lunchtime, she lives quite far away but i might need to try something similar if the current dog walker can't think of any solutions either. There's always something!! Im going to go into work a bit later for the next couple of weeks so I've got time to sort it out at least.

Elphame · 08/01/2018 21:04

Well done ZivaPup. Even when they stick two fingers up when they are a teenager if you can crack the recall now at least you know it will be back when they grow up

Oh I do hope this is true for Elfpup. He used to be so good. Now he's terrible

Puppy Survival Thread Part 5!
BiteyShark · 08/01/2018 21:26

Elphame we went down to 0% recall at times but it did come back. I felt like giving up so many times but so glad I didn't as he's a totally different dog to back then.

BiteyShark · 10/01/2018 08:32

BiteyDog is so funny. I have a mix of harness and slip leads etc depending on what we are doing. I decided to try a new harness as his is quite old now and because it fastens differently he just stood there and refused to budge when it was on. I think our walk today is going to take a long time Hmm
