Make sure you have everything to hand, dressing gown, shoes, torch etc so you can grab and take out straight away when he stirs because they don't tend to give much warning especially when in their sleepy state Grin. I also found he sometimes wanted to play after taking him out but I did the 'no talk' and back to bed trick. If he stired again it was straight out and if no pee then straight back to bed. He soon learned night was for sleeping or quick toilet break but no playing Grin

ZivaDiva · 28/12/2017 19:22

So far we’ve had several wees and 2 poos outside. Only one wee inside and that was when dd took him out and didn’t stay out for long enough.
We’re keeping him on a trailing lead at the moment so he’s easy to get outside quickly. I learnt with last pup that just letting him roam freely was no good for training. He had to be on a lead for business trips.Smile
Think I’m going to sleep downstairs tonight as I’m up at 4.30 for work anyway.

BiteyShark · 28/12/2017 19:26

Sounds like things are going great Ziva although don't fancy your early start for work Sad

QOD · 28/12/2017 19:28

Mine had been created already and left with mum and sisters or just sisters whilst the breeder did school run etc. We didn’t even think about toiletting her at night. Breeder just said she’ll start to pee and poo as soon as she gets out of the crate so get her on a mat/outside
Bought a book by Gwen Bailey. She doesn’t crate but the rest of the advice seems cool.

We had her in. Her crate in one or the other of our bedrooms for a week or so at night and just murmured to her then ignored. And now she’s downstairs for 8/9 hours fast asleep. Only had 1 wee incident the first week

ZivaDiva · 28/12/2017 19:41

At least Zivapup won’t have a long night. Then DH and DD are in charge for the day.Grin
I think the little lamb is shattered, it’s been a full on day for him.

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 28/12/2017 20:17

Ziva how was getting a collar on? I managed, but he scratted like mad and I think it was very loose, so I took it off. Also, do you leave a collar on it the crate at night?

ZivaDiva · 28/12/2017 20:32

I always take it off when he goes in his crate. I put it on to bring him home and he’s scratched at it, and chewed the lead a few times but is easily distracted with toys. We have loads as my collie loves toys so he’s spoilt for choice.

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 28/12/2017 20:40

I think its the sheer logistics that I will struggle with. He woke from a nap and had a wee on the rug almost immediately, but when he's awake I think he wees outside no issues. I suspect we'll have an accident before I can get him out at night. There's no way I'll be able to get a collar on to go out at night. He's only 8 weeks now, so that should develop. I'll have a go tonight, see what happens and make a better effort for collar and lead tomorrow as I would feel much happier taking him outside with one, just in case. His confidence is increasing by the minute!! Grin. Thank you for all of the help. I'm a rather daunted first time owner.

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 28/12/2017 20:43

Totally outing to all Facebook followers, but here he is:

ZivaDiva · 28/12/2017 20:53

He’s adorable.Smile I’m a bit worried I’m going to have a sleepless night as mines been comatose since suppertime. I can’t believe he’ll sleep tonight.

Paperdove87 · 28/12/2017 22:14

Hi Hope I can join too? The advice on this thread seems great. I picked up my mini-schnauzer pup from the breeders today. She's 9 weeks tomorrow. We had a LONG drive home with her but she was good as gold. I'm head over heels already!

Wolfiefan · 28/12/2017 22:15

Oh bless. All the lovely new pups!

ZivaDiva · 28/12/2017 23:14

Well I’ve put him to bed in his crate with a cover over it and the radio on and, fingers crossed he’s asleep. Took him to the station to pick DS up at 10.30 and I think that’s tired him out, I may venture up to bed.

ZivaDiva · 29/12/2017 05:17

Got up at 4.45 after a totally quiet night and Zivapup had been clean all night. Went straight outside and had a long wee but then was distracted by grown up pup barking at a neighbours cat so came back in where he did a poo on the mat. Totally my fault but at least his pops are small.Grin

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 29/12/2017 06:29

Good night then, Ziva! That's great for first night.

Mine was more interesting. Pup was sleepy in the evening and had a longish nap. I played with him before bed. We come up early for DH, so I put him in his crate at 9pm. He cried for a few minutes then slept. I woke him at 11pm for a wee. Then I set the alarm for 3am and another poo.

All good, except he woke up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at 4.30am. Tried taking him out, but no interest, just wanted to bite my feet.

I'm guessing that I shouldn't let him nap as long if possible on an evening and to try and keep him up longer before bed.

Hope you had a reasonable first night Paper and more sleep than me!

BiteyShark · 29/12/2017 06:55

Dorito mine always dozed early in the evening so was an early riser which wasn't so much of a problem as we get up early. You can try and keep him up in the evening but mine just got more bitey and zoomie as he was then overtired and evenings would be difficult so I just worked on trying to get him to settle again after his morning pee. Even now he sometimes wants a quick pee early am but then snuggles down for a few hours again.

Welcome Paper, more new pups Grin

Thinking BiteyDog is too old (in body but not daftness) for this thread now but the rest of the board is slow Sad. Maybe I can be like the grandma in the rocking chair that sits in the corner Grin. We are back to the vets for yet another new dressing again today. Can't believe the grief for just a small cut Sad

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 29/12/2017 07:59

Now he's refusing to toilet outside, thanks to snow. Took him out, nothing, then pee and poo inside!

BooToYouToo · 29/12/2017 08:20

Boopup is still keeping us on our toes. My daughter took a new ring off to decorate the Christmas cake and, you’ve guessed it, Boopup snaffled it. As it was Christmas Eve we decided to wait and see and sure enough it came out the other end 24 hours later, albeit rather bent.

Our Christmas lights lasted until the 23rd when he managed to run past us and under the tree. There was a pop and a smell of burning as he bit into a bulb but he survived. The tree was in darkness from there on and is coming down today.

Yesterday he scrambled up a rock face so I held my breath until he came down again. He’s going to love agility when he’s old enough.

Finally at the end of the night I heard a loud crack as he bit a chunk out of a side table.

Paperdove87 · 29/12/2017 09:15

I bet Biteydog is still a puppy at heart! So sorry to hear about the injury sounds like he's been through the wars.

Paper dog had a good night. Up twice with her once for a wee, once I took her outside and nothing so brought her back to bed again. She settled really well despite the huge thunderstorm outside. But then my DH was with her when she got out of bed and she had a wee and a poo in the kitchen. Think he needs to work on watching her better!

Hope you all have a good day with your pups!

Fannyfanakerpants · 29/12/2017 10:14

My puppy went in to her crate, on her own and is asleep! Hooray. Now I just need to tackle her being awake in there.
She was asleep by 7 last night and there was nothing we could do to keep her awake. She still slept until 6.30 (with a few wee wakes) when my son woke up so I'm not sure they need to be kept awake in the evening when they're this little?

Elphame · 29/12/2017 10:38

Young puppies need a lot of sleep. Even now at the ripe old age of 5 months Elfpup will sleep a 12 hour night. When he was very little he was awake only an hour ( of frantic activity) between naps.

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 29/12/2017 10:56

I really hope someone tells mine he needs to sleep until a reasonable hour! He's having lots of naps today, but he's very excitable and struggles to relax. He likes to go to sleep on my foot Smile.

BiteyShark · 29/12/2017 11:08

Yes bloody winter is miserable with a puppy. -4 degrees last year outside trying to toilet train them and then the torrential rain. It's a muddy bog in the garden at the moment. We now have to wrestle with BiteyDog put a waterproof boot on before he goes out. He then looks at the rain and the mud and hops back in holding his pee for a bit longer Angry

Hand to hold for all those with young pups in the middle of winter.

Bluepuppy is a very young puppy in his head still I think Bitey Grin

I hope Biteypup’s foot is improving. I’m off to the vet with Bluepuppy myself next week. After thinking his separation anxiety was getting better I got a text from my neighbour not long after I left for work this morning. Bluepuppy was crying loudly and she was worried he was injured or in trouble. My parents were able to check on him and I’m ashamed to admit I almost wished he was in trouble somehow instead of just being sad Sad

His routine is out this week with no daycare but I still want to see if there’s anything else I can do medication wise. I spent most of the day at work trying to fight back the tears. I love Bluepuppy and he adores me but I hate not being able to leave him without being sick from worry. I don’t know what the answer is. Rehoming through his breeder, a doggy friend for him or just hope he gets better with age. Sigh.

In other news, he can now jump straight from the floor to the dining table Shock
