Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

BiteyShark · 14/07/2017 10:28

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

Our 11 week old mini schnauzer isn't interested in the kong toys either. He really enjoys the long Rag toys with squeakers- funny watching him trying to kill them.

He goes after my youngest too - trying to get up the pecking order!!

So far he's been very good - does all his poos outside and most wees. Sleeps in his crate 10-6. No problems with the collar and lead. Has learnt his name, sit and down.

Amazing how much attention he gets when out and about!

He was silent the first week he was home but now he likes a good bark at other dogs and joggers etc. Trying to work on 'sh' as we definitely don't want a happy dog!!

TheAntiBoop · 17/08/2017 08:33

Hmm I do want a happy dog, not a yappy dog!!

BiteyShark · 17/08/2017 09:13

Looks like we are back at the vets earlier than planned today because his diarrhoea now has mucus and blood in it from straining. BiteyDog is so hungry as well the poor thing must be starving as everything is just passing through him and he doesn't have any excess weight anyway Sad.

Hi ! Can I join in the chat please!

We picked up our mini schnauzer/mini poodle cross on Monday. She's 11 weeks on Saturday and touch wood is doing really well! Apart from 2 accidents she is pretty good at going into the garden for the toilet. Still working on sleeping at night though, she's perfected the art of sleeping through the day ConfusedGrin

All in all she's lovely, comes when she's called, sits when you ask her to ( sometimes without being asked), abit mischievous and very playful.... fingers crossed we don't hit a hurdle!!

She's obsessed with my feet, no one else's but mine Shock

bluetongue · 17/08/2017 09:52

Oh no Bitey no good that your pup is poorly Sad I Guess I've been lucky that Bluepuppy has recovered so well. About time something went right for us!

I'm not the best person to ask about sleeping arrangements and dogs. Bluepuppy sleeps in my bed Blush In my defence it seems to be very common among whippet owners.

Welcome Burntoutmum. Hopefully all goes well with pup but feel free to vent here if you need to. Jealous that yours sleeps through the day. My boy seems to always be on the go.

SkeletonSkins · 17/08/2017 09:58

Ohhh poor Biteypup hopefully the vets can sort him out and help him feel a little better.

Sounds like things are going well burntout!

BiteyShark · 17/08/2017 10:36

Right got the usual pro kolin to bung him up (must order a batch of this as we use it so often). If he isn't right by tomorrow we are back for medication. Bless him he's very swollen and bruised but otherwise he is healing well so I just have to get his bowls better and keep him from the wound for the next 8 days (counting down).

So with the sleeping in the same room with him and feeding him his very favourite food in the world (cooked chicken) I suspect by the time we get the all clear BiteyDog will be demanding this all the time Grin

Welcome burntoutmum, come and join the chat. You had better hide your shoes then if he likes your feet Grin.

SkeletonSkins · 17/08/2017 11:28

How did the school run go Pizza?

Soubriquet · 17/08/2017 11:40

Hmmm I'm trying to decide if this is worth doing

Got Lexa her wet food today (forthglade). On the first two days she wolves it down with enthusiasm. After that she seems to turn her nose up and I notice it does go a bit dry. The packet says to use within 48 hours but the tray can easily last her 5-6 days.

It says it can be frozen...wondering if I should freeze some in portions and see if that keeps the freshness. What do you think?

BiteyShark · 17/08/2017 11:47

Soubriquet it's certainly worth trying with any you have left rather than throwing it away. Given the small quantities it probably won't take long to defrost either if you forget to get it out in time.

Soubriquet · 17/08/2017 11:47

No that's what I'm thinking too.....hmm I'll try it. If it doesn't work it doesn't need work

CornflakeHomunculus · 17/08/2017 13:31

Soubriquet Forthglade have recently started doing some of their wet food flavours in smaller trays; 125g rather than 395g. I don't know if they're available in shops yet but you can certainly get them straight from Forthglade themselves. It's only a limited selection of their flavours at the moment but I think they're gradually increasing the number they do.

Natures Menu also do 150g pouches of their Country Hunter range which is great stuff.

Soubriquet · 17/08/2017 13:38

Ah that's handy to know thank you

I've just bought 4 trays at £1 each so I'll try the freezing thing first and then look at smaller trays

Abhorsen · 17/08/2017 16:49

Hope biteydog is on the mend soon, that all sounds so stressful.

Good to hear your pup is getting on well antiboop, I've been feeling a bit overwhelmed yesterday and today - think it's partly just tiredness but the dogs next door have been barking a lot when we're in the garden and distracting pup, as well as encouraging him to bark and I've had a panic that he's going to be a really barky dog Blush

burntoutmum · 17/08/2017 17:49

Yep spoke too soon Confused, Molly wee'd upstairs - must have been quick as I was with her, had a wee in the lounge - even though we'd just come in from the garden, and whilst cleaning that up I spotted poo hidden in the corner of the room!! Thought the room was particularly dog whiffy today Angry

Grin
DeepfriedPizza · 17/08/2017 18:17

skeletonskins no drama on the school run then dh did the afternoon one.
She's started barking at dd a lot.we need to work on that

SkeletonSkins · 17/08/2017 18:28

Pizza will she take food from DD? Could you get DD a little bum bag with treats in it she can pass to dog whenever she goes past?

SkeletonSkins · 17/08/2017 18:28

burntout when you can smell something but can't find it 😂 Definitely been there!!

Soubriquet · 18/08/2017 07:30

Lexa has learned to smile when she's really happy to see you

It's quite funny to see those little teeth in a big grin.

She looks like she's snarling but she isn't...she's so happy, she's actually smiling.

BiteyShark · 18/08/2017 08:25

I think I might cry in a quiet corner. BiteyDog was up frequently in the night and a few times this morning of very small pools of mucus. I think we will probably be phoning the vets at the end of the day for medication.

And to top it off he has a very bruised and swollen scrotum, so much he looks like he still has his balls. This looks like a common complication and the vet yesterday said it was within tolerable limits but I am sure they are more swollen today. We had a real battle getting his cone on which I don't think helped so I am going to leave it be today and try and keep him as calm as possible in the hope that it helps the swelling otherwise it's another vet trip [crys].

It's my birthday this weekend but think I feel like delaying it as watching a sad dog doesn't make me feel like celebrating Sad

OP posts:
SkeletonSkins · 18/08/2017 08:30

Oh poor Bitey sounds like it's really sore :( a call to the vets might be worth it as better to be seen today than to have to face emergency vets charges over the weekend.

Soubriquet · 18/08/2017 08:33

Poor biteypup

Hope he gets well soon

DeepfriedPizza · 18/08/2017 08:40

Poor Biteypup

Another ok night last night, went to bed at a reasonable time, we heard her up at 4.30 but didn't get to her in time so she pooped on the floor but that's ok. We are grateful for our wooden floors. She was let out and done a few pees outside.

No barking at DD this morning so fingers crossed things are improving
