Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

TitsalinaBumSquash can you try the collar in the house very loose without the tag?

Mine hated walking at first but I found that when I took him to somewhere safe where he could run off lead he was much better on he lead. I think because then he didn't just associate it with being constrained. He also hated walking in the morning so we didn't bother with an early walk until he was much bigger.

Bitey, pup will probably come home from the vets wearing cone. He will think you are the best mum in the world if you switch him to a t shirt😁

iPhone, we took our pup to the groomers when she was about 16 weeks old for a first look, just a brush and a couple of treats and a fuss from the groomers. And then again a few weeks later for a bath and a quick trim around legs and beard. Then a full haircut the next time.

Towel, we live rurally and I spent lots of time out on walks standing by fields of cows, sheep, horses dropping her treats for focusing on me and not the livestock. Although she is always on lead when we walk through a field of cows etc she doesn't show much interest, is calm when we meet horses out and about and we regularly pass some noisy ducks in the village that now don't excite her. I think they call it habituation? Cats, though are an entirely different ball game but we don't meet enough to do any training☹️

Hello all.
I am going to be joining you at the end of the month. We are adopting a 9 month old pup from Romania. Although she will be socialised she will need to be trained as an actual pet, let the fun commence.

At least she is neutered so that's one less thing to worry about

Wolfiefan · 09/08/2017 15:32

Deep fried have I just posted on the thread where you said you passed your home check? Have you found a decent trainer to work with? Good luck.

DeepfriedPizza · 09/08/2017 15:41

I don't see your reply ,Wolfie Confused
I went to puppy training classes with my mum (and her pup Grin) so know the basics and have a clicker etc. The trainer my mum used is local and is on hand if we need him.

Wolfiefan · 09/08/2017 15:44

Given the history of the dog I would look into classes. It may not be as socialised as you would like!

DeepfriedPizza · 09/08/2017 15:59

Yep, I completely get that. I know the timetable of the classes etc so I am going to wait until she is here and see if she needs one to one training before she goes into puppy classes.
She will be socialised in the sense of having a gang of chums around her but I know she'll need to learn her manners Grin

Wolfiefan · 09/08/2017 16:05

We're still learning our manners! Grin

BiteyShark · 09/08/2017 16:12

Ok quiz for you.

10 month old house trained for months and always asks to go out even with a bad tummy. Hard floors on the house and got rid of the mats by the doors when he was little as he chewed the edges.

Came home was outside, dog had been out. Door open to outside when he decided to pee on the mat instead.

  1. Is this due to somehow being a new mat?
  1. Possible UTI although no sign but I guess if he pees inside again I will have to take him for a check up.
  1. Wondering if doggy daycare uses puppy pads for the younger dogs and he thought it was one. Have asked if they use them and awaiting reply.
  1. He has decided to start marking inside. Sad
  1. He now hates the rain even though it was only spotting when he went.

Arghhhhhh I thought those days were long gone.

Neutered? Teen stage? Hormones?

BiteyShark · 09/08/2017 16:15

Not neutered yet. Teen/hormone possible Sad.

Arghhhhhhh [sobs]

Perhaps he just wanted to christen the mat?Grin Annoying, but I wouldn't worry yet. Hopefully it's just a one off?

Today is first day puppy can go out after inoculations and it's pissing down😡 I was extra excited as up until now we've been having to toilet train her to go on balcony (no garden) Now it's raining that hard I can't even put her on balcony. She's so tiny I'm scared she'll wash away!

Wolfiefan · 09/08/2017 16:20

Took a lovely brand new folding chair to a dog show. Put it down. It was piddled on by an entire male. Guessing it smelt wrong!

BiteyShark · 09/08/2017 16:23

Mat is in bath being washed. I did wonder if it was just a new mat thing but it went down on Friday and no pees till today. His mood has been odd so maybe it's behavioural and just have to watch out. He's due for neutering next week so if he does it again I will ask them to check his pee as presumably if he has a uti they will want to clear that up first.

BiteyShark · 09/08/2017 16:36

Wolfiefan hoping it was just the 'new mat' thing that made him mark it. Mat not going back down for a while until I work out whether it is anything else Grin

Right now I am over my peeing incident...

Welcome DeepfriedPizza. Is this first pup or have you had dogs before?

isthismummy the weather has been awful here as well. Maybe you could both huddle under a big umbrella.

Few days away for us with the pup. Older dog couldn't go as he has sore legs and wouldn't manage the longer walks at the minute. Ups and downs really - he was great walking round busy tourist towns and we ate out with him a few times without him causing a fuss however he got so so tired on the first day and starting growling at things and a few people which I wasn't best pleased about. He wouldn't settle and sleep at all even though I knew he needed to so think that was the culprit. Also think he felt really unsure as we didn't have older dog. The cottage we were in was a bit of a pain too as I didn't realise the garden wasn't fenced in at all so it was full harness and lead on whenever he needed a wee. Anyway here's a pic of where we were staying which was lovely. I guess I need to focus on the positives - he could be trusted in a house that wasn't ours, he walked around sensibly etc. He's definitely a home bird though and is glad to be back at home!

Bitey its probably just a smell on the mat, maybe he walked on it with wee on his paws or something so he thought he needed to mark it. I wouldn't worry - I bet washing it does the trick.

Titsalina we don't use collars in the house so I'm useless for that one. Walking - our puppy wouldn't walk past next door the first time we took him out! I was all excited about the first walk and it went a bit wrong. We found taking him to places where it wasn't as busy, lots of green open space, no cars etc got him going, and then he was happier to walk on the road then as he'd got used to it.

The view looks lovely Skeleton. I'm trying to find a cottage for next year and working out whether the garden is secure is proving hard. I bet he just missed older dog and they are a pain when they need to sleep but won't [sigh].

Spoke to daycare person (waves if she on here) and no obvious explanation for the peeing so decided he just didn't like the smell so it has been thoroughly washed.

Well be returning to our absolute favourite - Little Dumpdale in Pembrokeshire area. Just surrounded by amazing walks the the cottages are great for the dogs - secure garden, walks straight from the cottage and there's even an outdoor pool and a hot tub if the weathers good

BiteyShark · 09/08/2017 18:11

Just having a look at that property Skeleton. Looks nice and I like the fact that it is clearly dog friendly Grin

Thanks biteyshark we had a dog when we were teenagers which lived for 16 years, she was my shadow mostly. My mum and sister have both got puppies in the past few years and I've spent a lot of time with them.

Wolfiefan · 09/08/2017 23:22

I think. (Where's the clueless emoji face?) that wolfiepup is coming into season!!!! Aargh! I'm not ready. She's just a baby.
Went out tonight and she sat down and left a mark. Pretty sure it's not wee.
So stressed about this. Stupid I know. And we are off on holiday soon too. Bloody hell. Timing eh?
Knew this would be an issue. As she's a giant breed we can't spay until 2 at the very earliest.
So new to this. So ignorant!!

BiteyShark · 10/08/2017 04:50

Oh no Wolfie how long until you holiday and will they still take her in season?

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 10/08/2017 07:32

In a few days. Contacted the lady who's boarding her. She has some of her girls in season too. It's not a kennels but a boarding facility on a farm. She will be fine but I'm feeling the anxiety!!

BiteyShark · 10/08/2017 07:42

I think we worry more than them. If she has other wolfies to play with it will be fine Smile.

Any more signs of her season?

BiteyDog was a pain this morning at 4am barking in his crate and would not stop. Had to bring him into the bedroom to settle down but then he went back into the crate as I don't want it to become a thing. Typical, he has been great recently with his behaviour but a few days before I am going to get him neutered he starts acting oddly :(
