Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

BiteyShark · 14/07/2017 10:28

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

We seem to have had a breakthrough with Lexa's tummy.

She loves her food and wolfs it down...and no diarrhoea!!

It's a completely grain free biscuits (piccolo) and grain free wet food (forthglade)

Had a bit of a loony toons day out of her today though. She's been hyper nearly all day just racing about

Even on a walk she didn't just walk, she ran everywhere.

Don't know where she got the energy from

roundtable · 07/08/2017 14:06

Oh that's great news!

BiteyShark · 07/08/2017 14:34

Good news Soubriquet. Maybe she feels better in herself with the new food, hence all the energy Grin

Great news Soub - you must be really chuffed to have found a solution to that tummy!

towelpup had another great session at the groomers this morning - and i luffs her, because she came out really apologetic that his eyebrows were a bit wonky - but he was getting grumpy so she thought it was better to be wonky than have a bad experience: exactly what I want at this stage. AND he didn't bark half so much at ds's mate and his mum who came into the house at lunchtime - onwards and (hopefully) upwards...

Roundtable: remind me how old your pup is? I have one teenage ds and a heading into teenage dd, and I am SO not looking forward to three teenagers in the house!

roundtable · 07/08/2017 15:28

Great news about the groomers. Sounds very positive.

She's 7.5 months. Think it started about 6 months. We only had her from 4 months though as she's a rescue.

BiteyShark · 07/08/2017 15:37

Interesting, teenage rebellion started for my cocker around 6 months of age and peaked maybe 7-8 months and now 10 months starting to see him improve again so not too long but it has seemed like an eternity.

I'm wondering if things will regulate when she comes into season? Sounds similar timings though. It's the selective hearing that I find most frustrating.

BiteyShark · 07/08/2017 15:48

Oh yes I hated when he would just look at me and then deliberately run off as if to say I don't care what you say. I dreaded every walk.

OP posts:
SkeletonSkins · 07/08/2017 17:10

I'd say our rebellion peaked at 7-8 months too, 8 and a half months now and gradually making it through although definitely still have moments!!!

GooodMythicalMorning · 07/08/2017 18:29

Sounds like I've got a lot to look forward to.

BiteyShark · 08/08/2017 13:13

It's very odd how they can change so much. I have just had a Velcro dog on our walk today. Instead of running and hunting in the forest he just wanted to walk with me in case I threw his BALL. It was actually hard work getting him to walk rather than trip me up all the time Hmm

Soubriquet · 08/08/2017 13:17

I had mine legging it at a GSD barking like a loon....till the GSD suddenly came running at her!

Luckily the owner was able to call him back (after she had shit herself first)

She needs to learn some manners so as long as she doesn't get hurt, I don't mind her being chased off

roundtable · 08/08/2017 13:20

Mine was a nightmare this morning. We were with about 8-10 other dogs (all mostly dogs she knows) and she rarely responded to her name at all. But at least she is worn out now from over an hour of playing.

Dc2 is being a nightmare too so it must be a family thing...Hmm

BiteyShark · 08/08/2017 13:26

Omg he is now doing zoomies around the kitchen and garden. I think I need to remind him he is 10 months and not 10 weeks old Shock

OP posts:
Soubriquet · 08/08/2017 13:30

Mine has been doing major zoomies the last two days.

Something in the air?

TheAntiBoop · 08/08/2017 13:39

You're all worrying me now!

Pup is very calm - loves running around and chasing a ball but generally likes a cuddle and a snooze. He's not too jumpy but can see the nipping is getting worse

House training is going ok - he went and dug at the closed door yesterday and then went straight out to do a wee when I opened it. So he's definitely getting it!!

Still not a massive appetite though

BiteyShark · 08/08/2017 13:42

Soubriquet I think there must be something in the air Grin

Fortunately he is now asleep so I have some peace and can get back to work without a mad dog racing around.

roundtable · 08/08/2017 14:28

Mine just growled at the window cleaner. Think the sudden appearance of the ladder scared her. So I clipped her on the lead and took her outside so she could give them a sniff and she seemed okay. I guess we'll see if that works. She didn't growl at them moving to the back of the house and setting up again.

She's now head cocked at the thunder.

Not had the zoomies but there's still time...

I'm going to blame the weather. Even the highly trained gun dogs we walk with were a bit silly this morning. Grin

BiteyShark · 08/08/2017 14:31

BiteyDog will growl and bark when he is startled by a noise. I do the same and go with him and just say look it's fine and he then settles.

Humm, 7-8 months sounds like teenage peak then

We had our lovely behaviouralist round today: so lovely to have her input as always, but she did have me leaving a trail of treats down the road like Hansel and Gretel - I'm sure our neighbours think I'm insane :-) (towelpup just wants to walk down the high street, not go in the car. He is a man of Strong Opinions on such things, and Mexican standoffs ensue...)

We're off to the deepest west country tomorrow - no wifi and infrequent phone signal so I may be off grid for a while - look forward to catching up on all the doggy doings when I'm back. Looking forward to seeing pup in some 'real' country, and doubtless lots of very real mud (although he's not keen on horses, so not looking forward to dodging the bloody Dartmoor ponies, which I already have a low opinion of!)

Dottymum2 · 08/08/2017 22:55

Hi all, checking in :), sounds like pups all doing great. Bear seems firmly in the grip of the teenage phase (nearly 7 months), one minute he's a gorgeous boy and the next growling, nipping and jumping up at usually me but sometimes my youngest dd, tell me it's all normal behaviour (pretty please!). Can't complain on the whole thou, he's a real pleasure most of the time :)

BiteyShark · 09/08/2017 06:19

Enjoy your break towelpintpeanuts. Fortunately BiteyDog now ignores the horses walking about but wish he would give the large scary cows a miss Angry

Dottymum2 they really do regress when they want to Sad

Mine was in a very funny mood yesterday so I was glad when he finally fell asleep although at one point he had snuck into the lounge to sleep on the sofa without us noticing. He is booked in for neutering next week and I tried on a medical shirt to see how he tolerated it and he hated it, would not walk and just looked at me like WTF!. Not sure whether to use it or the cone next week as I am sure I will be the worst mum in the world whatever I do Grin

Is there an age puppies need to be before they are taken to be groomed? She will of had all her injections.

She is a Lhaso, so is growing rapidly and her fur is growing just as fast!

I'm thinking she will need to get used to it. So for a first appointment just a visit and then gradual?

TitsalinaBumSquash · 09/08/2017 07:46

Does anyone have any advice on collars? Sherlock has had his on for 4 days now and is still going absolutely nuts, I don't know if it's the tag he objects too or the collar itself but I know it's the law he has to wear one. Maybe a leather one would be better or something?

Also any tips on getting him to walk? Is it just a case of keeping going or if there a trick I can use? At the moment he goes mad as soon as the Barnes is put on him and the. Will spend the time dragging himself across the floor to try and get it off. Confused

BiteyShark · 09/08/2017 07:47

Some groomers wanted them to be 4 months or older but others didn't stipulate. I would phone and ask as they often do a puppy first visit anyway to get them used to the equipment.
