Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

Mine wasn't very food motivated. However, there are certain high value treats he never tires of that I save for special things such as recall. Cheese is the favourite and because he is a thin active manic thing I don't tend to worry about the fact that it is high calorie Grin. The other is a bit of cooked chicken which I now use as a treat when we leave him alone for a few hours.

Does he has a special toy? A ball? that might motivate him.

Snap Soubriquet Grin

I use cooked chicken and also buy the cheapest strongest cheese I can find as you only need a tiny bit but it smells strong.

Not raw chicken unless he likes it

Roast chicken is best

Or you can buy frankfurter sausages and cut them into tiny pieces

Doesn't have to be a lot to be a treat but it has to be ooooooo enough of a food for them.

One of my old dogs loved garlic liver. My nan got some liver, rubbed it in garlic salt, chopped it into tiny pieces and then roasted it till it was cooked

It went quite hard and chewy and he could not resist it

BiteyShark · 02/08/2017 07:53

The downside is he goes potty when we cook a roast chicken or make a cheese sarnie. We have to give him a tiny bit otherwise I think he would chew me leg off Grin

Another good one:-

Get some pilchards in tomato sauce

they stink but it's very effective

GooodMythicalMorning · 02/08/2017 08:26

Dogs should avoid garlic as its not good for them.

BiteyShark · 02/08/2017 08:55

I wish BiteyDog would avoid stuff that isn't good for him Wink [looks annoyingly at dog]

Little bit of garlic works as a flea deterrent so I don't mind adding a tiny amount to treats

bluetongue · 02/08/2017 11:48

Bluepuppy loves roast chicken Smile

He's a bit off today. Didn't eat breakfast but otherwise okay and no vomiting or diarrhea. I still took him to day care but mentioned his lack of appetite. Apparently he was fine. Ate his dinner of soft food but wouldn't touch dry food. He's five months old and I'm thinking teething might be causing this. Any thoughts?

Soubriquet · 02/08/2017 11:50

Sounds like Lexa

She is suffering badly at the moment. Feeling really sorry for herself, doesn't want to eat, walks fine but then gets home and just sleeps.

She's coming round slowly now. She's back eating some food and she's nomming on some dried chicken. She clawed really badly at her mouth the other night but it seems to have stopped now

Wolfiefan · 02/08/2017 11:52

Blue we have a pup with a really upset tum. Ok poo in garden then two really awful ones on walk. Ate breakfast first thing. Alert and happy.
We are switching to raw. Hoping it's the change of food. Increasing raw or different treats yesterday at training. (She had them before and was fine.)
What a mess. Yuck.

BiteyShark · 02/08/2017 11:56

BiteyDog was off it when he was teething.

Sloppy poos seem to be common with mine. He does it when he is running about like a loon which I have seen is common in some dogs Sad

Poor Lexa and Bluepuppy and big pup Sad They do worry us at times.

Bet if I got some roast checked he'd eat it Grin

bluetongue · 02/08/2017 12:02

That should be roast chicken.

BiteyShark · 02/08/2017 12:10

I did find mine was picky with dry food and although I like the thought of raw food for practical reasons it isn't for us. I did read that a lot of the issues with kibble is that it doesn't smell much and dogs are all about the smell. Now I add a small amount of cheesy scrambled egg or some flakes of the cheapest cooked fish I can find in with his kibble and he eats the lot every single time.

Wolfiefan · 02/08/2017 12:17

Wolfie pup really won't eat it unless I keep sprinkling cheese or treats or roast chicken on it. A decent dried food would be easiest for me. But it doesn't seem to suit her. I hope the tummy clears up. Worried about my pfp!

Soubriquet · 02/08/2017 12:25

Have you got some pro-kaolin?

It's a probiotic for dogs guts and helps to realign it all

Good for squitty dogs

Wolfiefan · 02/08/2017 13:44

No I haven't. She's absolutely fine in herself. Just woken from her nap and greeted us all!

BiteyShark · 02/08/2017 13:59

Wolfie initially he would pick the nice bits out and leave half of the kibble but after a few days where we had a stand off he now knows it's all the kibble I put down or nothing else Grin. It is like having kids... eat all your dinner otherwise you won't get any pudding Grin. I do still give him the egg or fish with it though because he's my pfp as well Blush

I've been feeding it for 8 months. She really doesn't like it. And no. She didn't get anything different if she didn't eat it. At one point she lost 700g in two weeks. And she's had hot and red ears too. Yeast?
I'm trying a new raw from Sunday. Hoping that'll settle it down.

BestIsWest · 02/08/2017 14:54

First walk for Milo today. He was great. We went to a local park and he bounced along on his lead. Having big dog helped though as Milo could see him all the time. Followed by a trip to Pets at home. He was shattered by then and just lay down and refused to go any further.

BiteyShark · 02/08/2017 16:04

Awww Best I bet he is shattered now Smile. It's torrential rain here so we are all tucked up inside at the moment.

TheAntiBoop · 02/08/2017 16:10

What do you do for toilet when it's bucketing down? Pup was happy to go out in the rain to do a poo at least!

Wolfiefan · 02/08/2017 16:11

Coat and wellies for you.
Towel for pup.
Torch at night!

BestIsWest · 02/08/2017 17:04

Yes, both dogs snoozing at my feet now.

A question about dogs in cars.

Big dog has never really liked the car and when he was a pup used to tremble/ be sick.

He's much better now but will not lie or sit down and prefers to stand on top of anyone sitting on the back with him. He has a harness attached to the safety belt so he's safe enough but it's not much fun for him or whoever is in the back with him.

We're off on holiday soon and it's a 3 hour drive plus lots of trips out in the car. Crate during journey is not an option because there'll be 4 adults plus luggage, Big dog and the pup.

I was wondering if a thunder shirt might soothe him or if anyone else has any ideas for something that might calm him
