Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

Wolfie it sounds like your vet is a keeper!
Everyone else - please try and ensure your dogs are happy having their feet/ears/base of their tails touched - it makes exams MUCH nicer for everyone Smile

iphone wash the areas with biological laundry detergent and restrict her to a room away from that area (kitchen?) for a couple of days till she gets the hang of it again. Use a 'cue' word when she's toileting outside and reward her with loads of praise when she gets it right.

Veterinari · 31/07/2017 22:10

wolfie google sophia yin low stress handling nail clip and Chirag Patel bucket game nail clip for two excellent approaches to nail desensitisation. I particularly like the choice element of the bucket game

Yokohamajojo · 31/07/2017 22:16

So nice to read all the updates! jen so sweet about your pup trying quietly to take your socks ofSmile

Well I am on my own! Husband, kids and dog has gone to the in laws and I have to workShock

First time without dog and as nice as it is to have the house on my own I have found I ask about the dog before kids when speaking to them, I was quite nervous as in laws has an d lady of 12, very lovely spaniel/collie cross but who is getting old and has some arthritis! Sis in law also has a very bouncy and lively labradoodle so I have been worrying about introductions etc!

Turns out all has been greatGrinold lady and ypkopup gets on fine! Mil made one mistake of putting some food down which they had a bit of growling over but part from that, old lady is boss and yokopup seems to get that she needs rest and is old so won't jump on her or anything! Flying out on wed to reunite! Can't wait oh and they are over the water in the green island so involved a ferry crossing with pup in doggy hotel for the night which I was super worried about! Fine! So happy we did crate training

Sorry about mammoth post

Thanks vet. Great help. Wolfie was always very bitey when groomed etc. I've spent weeks and weeks building up so I can touch her legs and feet and lift her tail and run my hands over her back. Clean her ears. Put eye drops in. Etc etc.
the last thing I want is a panicked giant hound in a confined space with a stranger trying to do stuff she's not used to.
Today the vet had to move furniture to make space in the consulting room for her. Blush

Soubriquet · 01/08/2017 07:45

Lex really does not like pro kaolin

Does the proper teeth clenching and thrashing about to avoid be giving it to her

TheAntiBoop · 01/08/2017 09:32

Well pup has become my shadow! Managed to convince Dh to lift him into the sofa and promptly ran for me! Have to now undo the sofa habit before he is big enough to jump on!

Also had a lot of wees on the floor - I think I'm doing it wrong!! He does run straight outside as soon as he's let out of his crate in the morning so he does know somewhere in that brain!!

Otherwise he has been very good - kids are dealing well with him when he jumps up on them or nips. He is particularly intrigued by dd's hair

I'm starting to have a wobble as the responsibility I have taken on is hitting home!!!

GooodMythicalMorning · 01/08/2017 10:35

Its going to be a fun walk today, absolutely tipping down.

Sillysausages007 · 01/08/2017 13:53

Oh I'm so glad I've found this thread. Somewhat bemused "mummy" (?) to a 13 week old cockapoo here. Utterly clueless, although after two weeks of him joining our family I'm starting to figure things out. Still having wobbles though. Can I please join in?

towelpintpeanuts · 01/08/2017 13:59

Welcome sillysausages. Although I think a puppy photo is normally needed for formal admission Grin - yoko and GMM - lovely pix, lovely pups!

So: we had our last 'no pressure' visit to the groomers this morning: he does seem to be positive about going in, and a lovely play with their toys and I lifted him into their bath and he was fine about that too, so fingers very firmly crossed for me for tomorrow, everyone - I am stupidly nervous - I actually dreamt about him going to a groomers last night!!

Dd showed off his tricks to the lady who was working in the parlour and she said she'd never seen a puppy who was so obedient. I'm sure she says it to all the girls, but hey, me and dd felt good!

Wolfie - your vet sounds like a total star: so glad it went well. We managed to clip one whole toe-nail with no flinching last night (having followed the regime in that nail Facebook group for about 10 days). No blood, no stress, all good :-)

Captainladder · 01/08/2017 14:21

hello all

Pup seems to be having a sleepy day today... is that a normal thing? yesterday he was quite lively and awake for lots of the day... today mainly snoozing wherever I am. Kids are also having a quiet day of TV after a late night and a music workshop this morning. Peace at last (for half an hour anyway!!)

GooodMythicalMorning · 01/08/2017 14:51

Yes mine has sleepy days. Usually followed by a mad day after!

TheAntiBoop · 01/08/2017 14:55

My pup has been quite lazy today - glad to hear it's normal!!

toptomatoes · 01/08/2017 15:16

Hello, can I join? We have an almost 5 month old springer spaniel puppy. She's extremely good but I'd welcome any advice about pulling on the lead especially near scary roads/down our road on the way home. We stop every time she pulls and she normally sits then we might get a step or 2 in before she pulls again. We use treats too. I think it's just perseverance but any tips welcome!
The vet also mentioned that we should think about spaying at 6 months. My sister had her puppy done after her first season so I am just starting to research what's best to do!

BiteyShark · 01/08/2017 15:41

Hi to all the newcomers. The more the merrier Grin

toptomatoes I have a cocker spaniel and at the gun dog training they have mentioned how hard it is for spaniels to walk on heel as they are designed to hunt from side to side. It is possible but to be honest I put him on a short lead when by a road which isn't for long as I mainly walk off lead.

Mine is a dog so I think it may be different for spaying compared to neutering but the advice was to try and wait until they had finished growing so around 1 year although BiteyDog will be slightly younger than that as he is being done soon. Again not sure if same applies for bitches.

toptomatoes · 01/08/2017 16:06

Thanks bitey. I know it can be difficult with spaniels and she's great off lead but we will give it a good go!

TheAntiBoop · 01/08/2017 17:04

I need toilet training tips! Poos are fine - he asks to go out - but he has wee'd inside all but twice today. I've taken him out every 20-30 min but he can go hours and always seems to go when I nip upstairs quickly!

What should I do!!

BiteyShark · 01/08/2017 17:08

TheAntiBoop I lived in the kitchen for weeks so I could literally pick him up and plonk outside if he started peeing in the house. Seriously me and pup never went into another room for weeks and when I needed a shower etc DH stayed with him in the kitchen with the door ajar for a quick exit. I also spent hours stood outside until he had to pee and then I treated and praised.

CornflakeHomunculus · 01/08/2017 17:34

I don't know if you've seen it Anti but this is an excellent guide to toilet training.

If you need to leave him, however briefly, always make sure he's just been before you do. Is he happy when you leave the room? If he's not then he's more likely to go than if he not bothered.

SkeletonSkins · 01/08/2017 17:49

If you take him outside and he doesn't go, I found the best thing to do was to keep him on your knee for five mins or so, and then take him again. Repeat until he goes.

Wolfiefan · 01/08/2017 18:25

Bitey me too. Weeks. Mainly sitting on the bloody kitchen floor being chewed!
Today we did training. She did a wait whilst not just me but the whole class left the hall and went into the kitchen. A few weeks ago I could manage about two steps away.
She was startled by a motorbike outside as I was returning and started to come to me. Told her down and she did. Mega praise! Wolfhound? More like Wusshound! Grin

TheAntiBoop · 02/08/2017 07:34

Weeks!!

Dh is the problem so far - he's not being consistent. Have resorted to leaving him with the kids in the garden (the dog - not Dh) so I can answer the door etc!

How do you motivate a dog who isn't interested in food? or what is a good high value treat?

Soubriquet · 02/08/2017 07:48

Try bits of cheese or chicken

Even the most stubborn dog can't resist fresh chicken or cheese.

TheAntiBoop · 02/08/2017 07:50

So raw chicken?

What cheese? He's not keen on cheddar...
