Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

Tried adaptil?

SkeletonSkins · 02/08/2017 17:23

I've not tried a thunder shirt but I all honestly in that situation I think I'd be asking the vet for something to make him a bit tired. Might help him settle.

Ah just about to take the dogs out and the heavens opened despite weather app saying only 4% chance of rain!! Pup does not do rain so hovering around now to see if it stops.

BestIsWest · 02/08/2017 17:33

Just googled I Adaptil and think I might order a collar.

towelpintpeanuts · 02/08/2017 17:44

Just checking in to report a grooming success :-) Towelpup was a really good boy for his new groomer today - hurray! They were just doing a bath and brush - but he was good as gold for them, stood and sat nicely whilst they brushed him and tolerated everything really well. Hurray!!!! After a bad couple of experiences with the first groomer we tried (as some of you may remember!!) it was SUCH a relief, and he's soooo fluffy and lovely smelling!

So: the only thing we are really working on now is NOT BLOODY BARKING at everyone who comes into the house! I have at least one visitor a day at the moment set up to be barked at whilst I throw chicken around! I am happy to accept an initial bark, they just need to be quiet once people have been allowed in....

Sounds like lots of poorly tummy-ed pups out there - hope they are all feeling better soon! Pro-kolin is our go-to here, but towel pup is the opposite of fussy, so we've not had any problems getting him to eat it by just mixing into food. Adaptil was recommended to us when towel pup was at his most nervous about life ;-) I'm not really sure if it made a difference or not, but worth a try...?

towelpintpeanuts · 02/08/2017 17:45

I've just remembered, my trainer said NOT to use the collars at the mo - they've redesigned them and they're not great (can't remember why!) - she recommended the spray, which you spray onto stuff around about 15mins before.

BiteyShark · 02/08/2017 18:27

towelpintpeanuts great news with the groomer.

BiteyDog is sulking because I am not standing out in the rain to play ball. He has been at daycare so it isn't as if he hasn't had lots of physical exercise today.

Well after an accident because the supervisor fell asleep pup then took himself outside to do two wees unprompted. So we will see tomorrow when I will be watching him like a hawk!!!

Puppy has been to the river with her brother today. He's been several times and is turning into a great little swimmer, was the first time for my puppy. She was hesitant at first and while she didnt go fully in and swim, she went in til her tummy was under water. Way better than I was expecting as she seems to be nervous around water and rain. The both ended up proper filthy as the kept digging in between getting wet but had a great time. Both puppy's are shattered and sleeping now.

Black lab is mine :)

Thanks Towel, I might have a word with our vet then.

GooodMythicalMorning · 02/08/2017 21:12

The boy and I have just been on a walk in the rain and he was good but did two extremely runny poops. I think it must be nervous/ excitement as he only ever does it on walks.

Soubriquet · 03/08/2017 08:40

Anyone got any tips on how to encourage Lexa to eat her treats in her crate?

She has this weird obsession with eating them on my knee. I move her everytime and eventually she gives up and just eats it in the floor but it's such a fight.

Would be so much easier if she ate them in the crate as it would stop the kids from touching them but if I put it in the crate she immediately drags it out

If I locked her in she would just whinge and whine and not eat

BiteyShark · 03/08/2017 08:49

The only time BiteyDog will eat in his crate is if the door is closed so I don't think I can help with that one. Otherwise he actually prefers to take his treats outside and lie in the flower bed whilst eating them Hmm

GooodMythicalMorning · 03/08/2017 09:43

Mine wont eat in the crate but will in the pen.

Indy goes for knees and elbows when tired.

Soubriquet · 03/08/2017 10:23

Anyone else clicker training their pup?

Lexa has picked it up so well.

She's got sit and down perfectly. Picking up paw nicely and is getting there with wait too

Wolfiefan · 03/08/2017 10:25

We did a bit of clicker training but it's hard work managing a wolfie, clicker and treat! We use "yes" instead!
Tum fine this am.

Soubriquet · 03/08/2017 10:26

Yes I suppose it's a bit harder with a big dog Grin

I find it quite easy

Just tedious getting the clicker primed first.

Soubriquet · 03/08/2017 10:27

And yes Lexa's tum is much better this morning too

Since I've started to switch her on to a grain free food funnily enough Hmm

Wolfiefan · 03/08/2017 10:27

I have one that has a stretchy thing that goes round my wrist. Found that easier. I also have one attached to dog walking bag.

BiteyShark · 03/08/2017 11:33

How upset should I be that BiteyDog is super and I mean super excited to see his doggy day care person. I mean could he have at least looked back just once to pretend he would miss me Hmm

[disclaimer: I am very happy he loves going off with her]

OP posts:
Soubriquet · 03/08/2017 11:49

Aww that's good though

Least you don't have to worry about him whilst you're working

Wolfiefan · 03/08/2017 12:19

It'd be awful if he had to be dragged in though. Bet he's glad to see you at the end of the day.

BiteyShark · 03/08/2017 12:27

Oh he totally loves her as well as the fact he gets to play with dogs and children. I am sure he looks forward to his day care days Grin

I do worry sometimes that he finds my days boring in comparison as it's just me and him and I have to work as well.

roundtable · 03/08/2017 12:30

Round pup is clicker trained. Knows sit, lay down, wait, paw, high five, up and off - we've not got roll over yet and leave and drop is mainly there but not consistent.

We had a behaviourist round who said to leave treats in a pot to the side of you, click then give treat so they're focused on you rather than the treat and it leaves your hands free. It works for us. I haven't done as much recently though.

SkeletonSkins · 03/08/2017 13:26

We also use 'yes' as a clicker word rather than a clicker. We can't use clicker in class anyway as trainer pointed out how will dog know which click is his if they're all going off everywhere!!

Having a completely indulgent day here watching old Storyville docs with pup cuddles up sleeping on me. Bliss! Easy walk on the field later and then puppy training tonight . Feel guilty for having a lazy day as I'm trying to shift some weight and have done exercise pretty much every day, but it is lovely!
