After years of wanting a dog (I grew up with dogs) I am finally approaching a time when it would be suitable to get one. I'm very excited as I've waited so long and things are finally falling into place!

I'm thinking of early next year and I have my heart set on a Black and Tan smooth haired daschund.
I have had plenty of time to research the breed and feel confident this is the right breed for my family.

The only thing is I'm unsure whether to get a dog or bitch, and I'm struggling with names a little.

So, this picture of a dog I found on google, what would you name him/her? Smile

The names I have so far are:

Male:

  • Pablo
  • Darwin
  • Walter
  • Arlo

Female:

  • Wilma/Wilmer
  • Minnie (I like it but too cutsie)
  • Martha

All of the names I come up with are met with raised eyebrows Blush
Any suggestions? Do you like any of my ideas?

I immediately thought of Minnie for a girl!

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 06/07/2017 21:54

Mr. Weenie
Or Miss, Mrs, Ms, Master obviously, don't want to discriminate Grin

qwertyuiop1234 · 06/07/2017 23:34

I think I've decided on a girl so it'd be Miss Weenie Wink

Thought I'd decided on Pepper but I don't want to have a Pepper and George, so back to the drawing board for me!

Winnie
Wilmer
Wanda

Seems to be a W theme.
I like Martha but probably more for a baby than a dog!

I think I like Wilmer spelt the boy way, not Wilma the girl spelling.
Would anyone have thought it was a male with that name or not fussed? Smile

I love Arli and Wilma they are so daschund Smile

My cats came with the names Sabrina and seabastian and there was NO WAY they were keeping those names ditto my alsation "Linda" that didn't last long either lol.

qwertyuiop1234 · 09/07/2017 09:25

I like Peggy!

What're you talking about, Linda is a great name for an Alsatian Grin
I can just imagine someone shouting Linda across a field and someone thinking you've spotted your middle aged neighbour out for a walk and then an Alsatian comes charging from out of the bushes!

I have a long haired Dachshund called Hector. We had George, Percy and Bert on our list too - Grandad names as my DD called them. Daxies are quite snooty, so a regal name suits too.

smileygrapefruit · 09/07/2017 16:24

Haven't rtft but going with the sausage theme...

Frank (furter)
Chip (olata)
Salam (i)
Toulouse
Pepper (ami)
Lincoln (shire sausage)

smileygrapefruit · 09/07/2017 16:26

Or for a girl, Della, as in mortadella

qwertyuiop1234 · 13/08/2017 09:04

Hi I'm back again Blush
Wondering if anyone has anymore suggestions!

Found a great breeder and her dog will be having a litter early next year which is perfect timing, so fingers crossed.

Decided I definitely would like a Black and Tan bitch, so my updated list is now:

  • Wilma
  • Betty
  • Maggie
  • Martha

Any more suggestions along this line would be amazing! Or opinions on these names too Smile

My husband hates sausage dogs, so when he dies I'm going to get one and name it after him Halo

Well done for finding a good breeder. I will do the same for my next dog. I think it just as responsible to support good breeders than to rehome.

qwertyuiop1234 · 13/08/2017 20:14

That made me laugh Weasel, I'm sure he'll be thrilled to be honoured in such a way Grin

And I'm definitely with you on the good breeder front!
I was able to visit her home, talked in depth and asked some questions. She's a lovely woman who clearly wants her puppies to go to good homes, she also has them back when their new owners go on holiday which is great Smile
