After years of wanting a dog (I grew up with dogs) I am finally approaching a time when it would be suitable to get one. I'm very excited as I've waited so long and things are finally falling into place!

I'm thinking of early next year and I have my heart set on a Black and Tan smooth haired daschund.
I have had plenty of time to research the breed and feel confident this is the right breed for my family.

The only thing is I'm unsure whether to get a dog or bitch, and I'm struggling with names a little.

So, this picture of a dog I found on google, what would you name him/her? Smile

The names I have so far are:

Male:

  • Pablo
  • Darwin
  • Walter
  • Arlo

Female:

  • Wilma/Wilmer
  • Minnie (I like it but too cutsie)
  • Martha

All of the names I come up with are met with raised eyebrows Blush
Any suggestions? Do you like any of my ideas?

If this was your dog, what would you name it?

The KC is just a registry, as long as both parent dogs were registered they will register the puppies just the same whether they're from an absolutely fabulous breeder or the worst kind of puppy farm. Whilst I would expect any breeder who can register their puppies to do so, it's by no means a guarantee someone is reputable.

I would always recommend starting with the relevant breed club, they can usually put you in touch with breeders who are planning litters. The breed clubs generally hold their members to a more stringent code of ethics than the KC does, although in some breeds there is an issue with denial of health problems. The Dachshund Breed Council seem fairly switched on though and they also have pretty good website dedicated entirely to health.

Champdogs is also a reasonably good starting point, it lets you search for breeders who health test which is a good way to weed out the less than ideal ones.

Champdogs also have a really good little guide to buying a puppy and their list of questions to ask a breeder is also well worth reading.

I think it should have a nod to its German roots so Helmutt Grin sorry Blush
Really though I think the name grows on them tbh. I expected dd to choose a really cutesie name for ddog as she is that sort of girl. After all we've had hamsters called captain cutesie and princess sophia and a rabbit called Mr Buns.
Ddog though is Eric (after Bananaman's alter ego Hmm) and it suits him perfectly.

Yappy!

BLUEsNewSpringWatch · 03/07/2017 20:25

I really like Solo for a dachshund Grin

KC Assured Breeders scheme is a good starting place but it's not infallible.

KC Registered pups just mean the last 5 generations are known to be a certain breed and someone paid a fee to add the pups to the register.

i just heard of a sausage called neville which i thought was awesome!

gingerbreadmam · 03/07/2017 20:31

do your research on their temprament. i may just own one and they are extremely stubborn and notoriously difficult to train. You get harassed in the street too and although ours is friendly and good natured he hates being fussed so you constantly have to police people trying to pet him when out.

Thank you for the advice gingerbread! I've heard they can be extremely stubborn but I'm bracing myself for that!
My parents have two dogs notorious for their bad temperaments (one vicious and hard to train, the other lovely but hyper and unruly) and they're both extremely calm and well socialised dogs. Extremely obedient too!
I assume this is partly due to getting from a good breeder and training from day one, and stopping any bad behaviours immediately.

I'm aiming to do the same!
Honestly, people eye roll at the sound of one of the breeds and when they meet her they can't believe have obedient and loving she is.
So although I'll be wary I'm going to try and get an idea of the temperament of the parents where possible and put the work in in terms of training!

I'm thinking Pepper may be the one if we end up with a bitch. I think it will really suit a small black dog!

Still unsure on a name for a dog though, I love all the Walter, Winston and Alfred's etc but I can't imagine shouting those names at dog training Grin

DNiece had a soft toy one called Delilah.

MyBootsAreMuddy · 03/07/2017 21:46

A friend of ours has 2, one came from a rescue centre as a puppy and came with the name Chipolata (there were 2 more from the same litter named Onion and mustard!). She liked his name so kept it, although he is mostly known as Chip. Her other one came last year from someone who was moving overseas and didn't want to put him through the stress of the long flight as he is quite old. He is called slinky.
