Dogs and rain

Do you drag your DDog out in all weathers even if they don't look like they are enjoying it?

Torrential rain all day here and put his jacket on even though he hates it and did a walk where it was obvious he wasn't impressed and almost raced back to the car to finish. I feel guilty not taking him out but after today I am trying to decide whether it was the right choice

My miniature schnauzer is refusing point blank to go out the door! She hates her coat anyway and sulks for a good ten minutes after we put it on

Oh god yes issues with his coat, we had a good 5 mins where he almost refused to walk properly with his coat on despite me tempting him with sausage.

You would have thought his back legs were deformed and I checked twice the coat wasn't pulling or catching on him which makes me think dragging him outside just isn't worth it

Just remember that the sound of rain is amplified due to dogs sensitive hearing and this is usually the reason they don't like it, it hurts ..... nothing to do with getting wet lol .....

I have a working breed and they don't like pouring rain (drizzle is fine). If it really bad I try to swap things round in my day so I can do it later in the hope the rain will swap but if not we just don't go. They prefer to just play brain training games inside, like hiding treats around the house. I also have 2 so they play with each other which keeps them running around.

I don't. I play games in the house. I've been known to take him in the back garden with an umbrella to make sure he 'goes', in the early house training days..

Florin and xxreeldancerxx that is interesting to know as DH says I should have left the walk tonight as I made sure he had one this morning before the rain kicked in but I feel lazy but maybe DDog would have preferred a lazy evening as well

PUGaLUGS does your DDog look like they enjoy it when you are finally out? The reason I am questioning myself is that tonight he really looked like he hated every minute of it.

My JRT won't walk if I try and take her out in the rain. I have to plonk her outside for her to have a wee if it's raining hard.

It's been raining here all day and all day she's been toddling up to the front door with her 'Yay! Let's go out!' face. Then peers out and gives me her 'You are kidding me, I am not going out in that' face and goes back to bed

Used to go in all weathers until a few years ago, looked at him and could see he was very unhappy, tail down, ears down, just ploughing through. Turned for home earlier than normal and he was like a different dog practically galloping back to the car.

Decided there and then not to go if it was miserable weather.

He's quite happy to miss our set morning walk if its tipping down. Being home means I can fit walks in around the weather.

Mine had to go out for a wee in the snow last night, ran away at first attempt. She is very happy to wear a coat but hates the rain and cold and would much rather stay home and snuggle I am pretty grateful tbh she is a very low maintenance dog.

My dog hates the rain. He lies on the sofa with his chin on his paws, doing a super depressed mournful face. If he really needs the loo, he speeds in and out faster than Usain Bolt.

Trigger was keen as mustard despite the pouring rain, daft dog. We were all absolutely drenched by the time we'd spent 90 minutes walking in the rain, but he still had a spring in his step and his tail was wagging high and proud.

My dog loves the rain In fact he walks slower on purpose - at least that is what it feels like. Unless it's a serious hail storm he always wants to go walkies.

We were drowned rats today - he won't wear any sort of coat, walks even slower with one. Rain seems to make him go a bit crazy and he legs it round the house like a loony when we get back and I've dried him off.

Hmmm think i must have a fair weather dog as I have never seen him run back to the car as quickly as tonight so no more dragging him out unless it's just a drizzle.

I've got whippets and I don't really fight the fact they're very much fair weather dogs.

If it's just a bit of drizzle then yes, I still take them out. They look unimpressed initially but as long as they're suitably attired they forget about it once we're out and about.

If it's properly raining then no, I don't bother. It's very clear they're miserable out in the rain, even if they're wrapped up well.

Cold and snow they don't mind, as long as they're wrapped up well. Snowy walks I tend to keep reasonably short as their feet get absolutely freezing.

Like other posters when we don't go out we do brain games, more play and stuff like that at home instead.

Winter is a pain as I feel like I spend the whole time desperately dodging the weather. I've got short, fulfilling walks down that I can fit into any tiny gap between showers down to a fine art though!!

Aww biteyshark that must have been a real quandary for you!

According to our dog trainer, there are lots of games you can look up online to play indoors. Apparently mental stimulation and games in the house are equally as good sometimes.

I don't get to try these games as my Labrador has no hesitation about a howling gale/sideways rain. We're out twice a day in all weathers...followed by a hose down and a towel dry 🙄😂.

wineusuallyhelps yeah I have always gone by the two walks a day no matter what the weather but DDog clearly doesn't agree with that.

I will have to look up some indoor games we can play which will exercise his brain instead when the weather is really bad like tonight.

Our dog refuses to relieve himself in the garden (did NOT train him thus) so we have to take him out in all weathers.

He doesn't mind once he's out and he gets thoroughly dried afterwards.
