Dogs and rain

Do you drag your DDog out in all weathers even if they don't look like they are enjoying it?

Torrential rain all day here and put his jacket on even though he hates it and did a walk where it was obvious he wasn't impressed and almost raced back to the car to finish. I feel guilty not taking him out but after today I am trying to decide whether it was the right choice Confused

We have a Border Collie and I don't think she even notices its raining Grin

But agree if dog seems to hate it then just out for toilet and play in house (if the dog likes to play).

Cocobananas · 29/01/2017 19:22

8month springer cross pup still keen to go out for usual walk and play in garden before tea. Been stretched out in front of fire though since 6 0 clock.

Poppypooch · 29/01/2017 19:48

I don't walk in torrential rain, big dog (Doberman) is not impressed, head and tail down and marching to the car shaking himself all the time with that look of can we go home now, meanwhile little dog (Springer) just doesn't care what the weather is doing the muckier the better for herGrin They both love the snow though

Noitsnotteatimeyet · 29/01/2017 19:49

My dog isn't wildly keen on torrential downpours like we've had tonight - normal rain, especially if accompanied by wind, is fine as is ice, frost, snow - but he's not happy with pouring rain. It's nothing to do with getting wet as he throws himself into the river in sub-zero temperatures with every appearance of enjoyment Hmm

ChairRider4 · 29/01/2017 21:21

I have a Lab so it's rain who cares I want a walk he loves it as means lots of puddles

But my friends staff won't go out in rain for walk at all point blank refuses and even when going for a wee does not hang round if raining

RandomMess · 29/01/2017 21:25

My friend has a lab, when I walk both ddogs together Lab sees the tiniest puddle with huge rapture to bouncy through and splash etc. my dog looks at lab WTF - and avoids, avoids, avoids Grin

MissBeehiving · 29/01/2017 21:50

My Big dogs (border and lab x) are fine in the rain. Little dogs (chihuahuas) won't go outside if it even looks like rain. The smallest one takes a sniff of the air and if it is too cold/wet/windy scuttles off back to her hot water bottle, the wuss.

PacificDogwod · 29/01/2017 21:55

DHound can hold it all in when the weather is bad - for up to 16 hours Shock

He will not go out when it is wet outside and he is too big for me to make him go. We live in Scotland, it rains a lot and thankfully he has amazing continence Grin

BestIsWest · 29/01/2017 21:56

Ours seems to adore it. He wasn't so impressed afterwards when he was shivering and I gave him a bath to warm him up.

BiteyShark · 30/01/2017 06:11

Being out in the torrential rain was horrible but I always think it's so worth while when you look down and they are having a whale of a time.

Seeing his face saying w.t.f looking back at me made me think am I doing this for him or for me and in retrospect it definitely was not a happy dog last night.

I guess I should be grateful I have a dog that hates torrential rain so I can stay snuggled up in the warmth with no guilt Grin

Mine refuses to go out of the front door, but if we do go out she normally seems to forget about it

witwootoodleoo · 30/01/2017 06:25

Erm... for those whose dogs hate coats can you not just walk them without coats on? With the exception of a very limited number of breeds and some ill and elderly dogs there's really no need. They have lovely natural coats and don't need clothes.

NormaSmuff · 30/01/2017 06:43

The look on my dog's face was a picture last night when I asked her if she wanted to go outside Grin

SallyGinnamon · 30/01/2017 06:50

Our Border Terrier sits down and refuses to budge. We've tried dragging him a bit but gave up. He always sprints for home though!

dalmatianmad · 30/01/2017 06:56

Dalmatian girl loves the rain and seems excited about running around getting wet....

Staffie boy stands with his tail between his legs and looks horrified at his spotty sisters muddy antics Grin

pinkhorse · 30/01/2017 07:04

My dog does not care one bit about rain. She's a working dog so has to be used to anything. There is literally nothing that would stop her going for a walk.

BiteyShark · 30/01/2017 08:11

witwootoodleoo I only use a coat for torrential rain.

Torrential rain + coat = miserable but at least dry-ish
Torrential rain - coat = miserable

But maybe the rain + coat is just taking the piss Grin

My dog is from working lines so expected him to want to be out and about no matter what.

However, he refuses to walk first thing in the morning and now in torrential rain. Slightly disappointed in DDog not being of the more hardy type Grin

picklemepopcorn · 31/01/2017 07:54

Worst dog is one which won't go out in the rain but still needs the exercise so gets batty being cooped up.

StandardPoodle · 31/01/2017 16:24

Old Rescuegirl is happy to wear a coat and will go out cheerfully for the morning walk whatever the weather. However, for the afternoon walk she does tend to test the weather first , then decide whether to come or not.
The poodle bounces joyfully out in rain, wind, snow, sleet (need I go on?!). At least twice a day.
I live in wellies and wash a lot of dog towels.

Eolian · 31/01/2017 16:45

Yes. I live in Cumbria. If I didn't walk him when it's raining, he'd probably forget how to use his legs. Grin Very occasionally I can't face it and we play in the house. He'd happily go out whatever the weather though.

BiteyShark · 31/01/2017 16:51

Well we went out in the drizzle today. All good except he tried to dodge every puddle as he didn't want to get his paws wet. I thought spaniels liked water Confused

OP posts:
StandardPoodle · 31/01/2017 17:40

Ooh, a spaniel who goes round puddles! Would he like to try to convince old Rescuegirl (part spaniel) that it's better to do this than run full tilt for a puddle and deliberately jump short so she lands in the middle then start splashing for good measure......

HemanOrSheRa · 31/01/2017 18:45

My little JRT looks very embarrassed and like she's going to burst into tears if I put a coat on her. She doesn't like windy weather much as well as hating the rain. I think it's because she's got a whiskery face and it feels strange when the wind blows her whiskers.

flippychick · 31/01/2017 18:51

Our rescue terrier cross refuses to even step foot outside (even to the garden) if he can either sniff rain in the air or there is a chance one of his paws might get wet. Luckily he'll run around the house like a loon to burn off energy and has a very strong bladder.
