What would you have? We already have 2 amazing dogs and are contemplating a 3rd. I'd love to hear about your favourite dog breeds (or cross breeds) and why.

*food motivated not foot!!

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2017 08:51

My previous dachshund was foot motivated, he adored tugging off peoples socks and licking their feet. Grin

YouAll - we once met some people with a couple of wire-haired dachshunds who told us they'd intended getting a wolfhound but somehow ... Grin

Gingerbreadmam · 28/01/2017 08:57

Our mini dachshund has a toy box full of holey socks their his favourite toy and it doesnt take long for.him to try and get peoples off!

mrslaughan · 28/01/2017 17:09

I love our greater Swiss mountain dog - pretty much the perfect family dog - only downside is his intermittent recall, which means I have to be very careful on walks..... fortunately I live in an area where I can walk with friends and basically not run into anyone ......
When I get my way and have a managerie I will have whippets as well.....

JiltedJohnsJulie · 29/01/2017 17:04

Red Setter or wire haired dachshund.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 29/01/2017 17:06

And possibly a corgi.

OneOfTheGrundys · 29/01/2017 18:10

Yes to a corgi. Went to a farm in Wales this year on hols and there were 5 of them pottering around. Such characters!

Eevee77 · 29/01/2017 18:24

Hungarian vizsla, German shepherd or English shepherd. I'm very fond of crosses and don't think I'll ever have a dog that isn't a cross but a cross with one of the above and I'll be happy.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 29/01/2017 19:06

Sounds lovely One Smile

bowbear · 30/01/2017 07:58

If space and money were no object I would absolutely love an Irish Wolfhound :)
But my scruffy, westie is a brilliant little character and I wouldn't be without him for the world...I'm sure he'd love wolfhound playmate tho!

StandardPoodle · 31/01/2017 18:01

All 3 sizes of poodle! Loyal, intelligent, sensitive, always making us laugh. Our standard boy - all the above, high energy - think Zebedee on steroids -(this won't mean anything to anyone who hasn't seen The Magic Roundabout), fabulous recall at a phenomenal speed. Plays happily with a Newfie we sometimes meet on walks (or any other dog which wants to play).
And not a breed but can't ignore our good old rescue, probably a springer/collie cross, came with many problems but has given us so much pleasure.

ruthsmumkath · 31/01/2017 18:23

Have an Australian Labradoodle but dream dog is an Afghan Hound - lots of them!

LumelaMme · 31/01/2017 20:18

Any one of the following crosses:
German shorthaired pointer x vizsla
German shorthaired pointer x Weimaraner
Weim x vizsla
Any of the above x lab

I like short-coated, largish, very active, intelligent dogs not too far removed from the basic dog shape, and which try and talk to you. The absolutely nicest, best looking dog I know is a GSP x lab.

But I do agree with the PP who said that her vizsla puppy had been a handful. When our vizsla x was an adolescent (sensitive, loving, all the rest of it), I told the vet that he was manipulative. The vet clearly I thought I was being a bit of a bitch, but he wasn't the one who was having his mealtimes disrupted by a lad of a dog trying it on over and over and over again.

I'd have another one tomorrow, though, if DH's dog-limit had not been reached.

Empress13 · 31/01/2017 21:23

Ruth's given the fact a Labradoodle is a cross breed what on earth is an Australian one ?

aliasjoey · 01/02/2017 23:42

I believe that their are some labradoodle breeders in Australia who have managed to breed several generations 'true' i.e. the expected characteristics.

As such, they are pushing to be called an actual breed, but I think those ones are rare and expensive. The average ones you see around are still crossbreeds.

sparechange · 02/02/2017 13:47

An Australian Labradoodle has got EVEN MORE breeds in it
It's an actual mongrel

Someone I work with paid £1500 for one last year. I can't look him anymore without wanting to laugh in his face

ChocoChou · 02/02/2017 13:54

Rhodesian ridgeback gets my vote too. Such a beautiful dog, loyal, sensitive but somewhat aloof. Doesn't moult or smell as short haired and hates getting wet so no splashing around in muddy puddles :)

LumelaMme · 02/02/2017 13:57

It's an actual mongrel
TBH, that's how all 'breeds' start, apart from the odd landrace.

Look at what's gone into, for example, the Hamiltonstovare. Or even the Labrador: based on the St John's water dog, yes - but that itself was right old mishmash.

weaselwords · 04/02/2017 10:26

LumelaMme I've got a weim x viszla. He's a dude and very clever and so handsome. Bit neurotic at times though and can be very noisy if he has an opinion.

If you could have any dog breed in the world...
LumelaMme · 04/02/2017 15:52

Yours is very handsome - looks a lot like ours!
Yeah, ours can be a bit nervous, and when he barks... get your earplugs. But he also talks, and that's endearing:
Dog: WOOF WOOF WOOF!
Me: Someone at the door, by any chance?
Dog: Nrgh annngh wrrrah.
Somebody is indeed at the door
Dog, self satisfied: Nrgh!

OVienna · 04/02/2017 16:35

I really recommend the Griffon Nivernais. Ours is a Spanish rescue. UK Adopt a Griffon. So gorgeous, and so chill.

I currently have two cocker spaniels - they are very chatty, bark a lot, very loving, always under my feet, or sat as close to me as possible on the sofa.
When my 3 little children (all under 9) are bigger we will have a boxer - such funny, energetic dogs & full of character, I would want to be at home more with it though.
My Ex-DH and I had two boxers when we first bought a house, and they destroyed it - they ate the tumble dryer, emptied the fridge and ate the contents, tipped the kitchen bin over and ate the contents - can you see a theme here? They need lots of attention & stimulation!

RebelandaStunner · 04/02/2017 17:00

Breeds I have had and loved
Jack Russell
Lurcher
Greyhound
Whippet
Fox terrier
English Toy terrier
Labrador cross

Would love a German shepherd or Italian greyhound or Bull terrier.
