What would you have? We already have 2 amazing dogs and are contemplating a 3rd. I'd love to hear about your favourite dog breeds (or cross breeds) and why.

Samoyed

Caniche · 25/01/2017 20:45

A miniature poodle.

Very clever, sensitive, sociable with people and other dogs, sensible size, non-shedding, will happily walk all day or snooze in front of fire at home.

My perfect dog!

NoelHeadbands · 25/01/2017 20:46

I have a beautiful bonkers silky soft springer spaniel. Adorable.

But there will always be a special place in my heart for the magnificent, wonderful Staffie.

friendlyflicka · 25/01/2017 20:50

I always love the look of weimeraners, pointers, vizlas, spinones. But there is something in me that is made to own sighthounds of all different shapes and sizes.

The sighthound I think is stunningly beautiful is the Azawakh

friendlyflicka · 25/01/2017 20:51

At the moment I have tiny sighthounds (italian greyhounds). I love them but they are the most filthy creatures in the world!

BaublesAndGlitter · 25/01/2017 20:59

Right now I have terriers. Love them to bits but never again! They're so, I'm, spirited I think is the word. Lots of ongoing training to stop them hunting bringing me dead rabbits and birds

Would love an English bull terrier, staffie, rottie, or lurcher.

Had 2 bull terriers growing up - they're daft, stubborn, loyal dogs, full of character and not too energetic once you get passed the first few years. Would love to rescue one.

Would love a Rottweiler and staffie for the same reasons.

Would love a lurcher as I used to work with dogs and met lots of these - never met a naughty one. I wasn't fussed at first but they all got under my skin and now I think they're great, happy to be trained, curious, cute and don't want to kill everything

Jellykat · 25/01/2017 21:03

If i had a bigger house and more money, i'd have a huge Newfoundland!

AshesandDust · 25/01/2017 21:05

Toy poodle, I'm on my 3rd, they're very clever and quick on the uptake. And she's very loving, she adores being carried round like the queen of Sheba. My little one has learnt to use her eyes to 'point' to what she wants like the door opening, ham from the fridge etc.
She's the cleverest thing out of the 3 of us in the house tbh. Grin

Noitsnotteatimeyet · 25/01/2017 21:07

I have my dream dog already - he's a 3 year old Toller and he is the best dog ever.

He's the perfect size, big enough to be a 'proper' dog but not so big as to take over the house, fizzily energetic out on walks but chilled in the house, a dream to train as he's very bright and loves learning new things, playful but gentle with children and he's absolutely gorgeous too.

When I'm a little old lady I'll have a miniature poodle (but will make sure it's perfectly trained and not yappy)

pineappleeyes · 25/01/2017 21:09

A dalmatian. I saw one outside the supermarket at the weekend and it was very beautiful. I stopped after I'd walked past & turned round to admire it.

TweedAddict · 25/01/2017 21:10

Cocker spaniel! I've recently got a puppy how has utterly stolen my heart. She's so laid back and chilled, but then out and about a crazy puppy fool! She's so loving, never leaves my side and only wants to be loved.
I've also got collie- she loves to do her own thing on her own terms, but she's an amazing girl. Then my husband has got a lab, who loves him endlessly.

But I must say the cocker fits all of our boxes and I can see when the lab and collie go, we will have more cockers.

I love border terriers.

Good natured and great fun. As well as totally beautiful looking.

I adore them.

yetwig · 25/01/2017 21:13

I would love an Old English Sheep dog, having been bought up around them as a child I have always loved this breed. I have half a one who is 13 years old and crossed with a Golden retriever. But my dream one day is to have a pure breed one.

lapsedorienteerer · 25/01/2017 21:16

An Irish Terrier of course......no debateGrin

TrionicLettuce · 25/01/2017 21:25

To be fair OP pretty much every breed has their downsides as well, it's just a case of which downsides you find easiest to cope with Grin

As far as whippets go the main downside is prey drive. Even in show bred whippets it can be very high, DWhippet1 is absolutely ferocious.

It means being careful where I let them run, being watchful when they are off lead, giving them an appropriate outlet for their chase instincts (I'd take them lure coursing if I had a local club but as I don't flirt poles are an absolute godsend!!) and constantly reinforcing their recall.

I don't find it much of an issue but there's no denying it needs considering along with all the lovely things about whippets. It's all about what you're happy dealing with. Personally I'd much rather deal with high prey drive than lots of hair, slobber, really high exercise requirements or dogs that need tons of mental stimulation to keep them happy!!

This sweet old girl is my 4th Pembroke Welsh Corgi in 40 years. I love the breed, but they are not for everyone. Very intelligent, but like to do things their way.

picklemepopcorn · 25/01/2017 21:34

I forgot irish wheaten, bearded collie, old English sheepdog...

flumpsnlumpsnstuff · 25/01/2017 21:35

Rottie for me I loved my rescue boy, thick as a post and scared of everything sadly he chewed a block of rat poison some bastards had put on the dog beachSad
All my dogs have been rescues wolfhound, whippet, Great Dane that went down well and 2 total Heinz 57's.
We have 2 rescue hamsters and a rescue rabbit now so no dogs soon
Dh would love a husky and the dc's want a Lhasa poo as they look like stef teddies Hmm

ErrolTheDragon · 25/01/2017 21:43

A dachshund. DH had one as a boy, he says they're addictive, we cant quite imagine having anything else. We're on our second, this one is laid back, quite biddable, not snappy ...he does like a good bark but we've more or less taught him to desist when asked. Very clean, can walk long distances but if the weather is bad happy not to bother which suits us fine! Very good cuddlepup.

Gardenbirdy · 25/01/2017 21:52

I'd love an Irish wolfhound but we don't have room, and I can't imagine how doggie they smell when damp!
Magnificent dogs though.

flumpsnlumpsnstuff · 25/01/2017 22:00

Garden very very doggy ! I have a coat with fake fur trim and when it's wet it smells like my old dog Smile

Dementedswan · 25/01/2017 22:07

I've got a labrador. He's pretty amazing at 6 months old. Walks to Heel doesn't destroy house etc. But my dream breed is Italian spinone and they are like hens teeth x

MyDogEatsBalloons · 25/01/2017 22:09

A Bernese Mountain dog - I think they're like huge teddies. They're much too huge for me to have (unless I win the lottery). I'd also like a mongrel, ideally some kind of staff Labrador hybrid.

CatsTats · 25/01/2017 22:10

Belgian Malinois sadly we don't have the right home for one Sad we have a French Mastiff & Bernese Mountain Dog and I adore the pair of them. Dh dream dog is an import Doberman.
