What would you have? We already have 2 amazing dogs and are contemplating a 3rd. I'd love to hear about your favourite dog breeds (or cross breeds) and why.

German Shepherd, loyal, intelligent, amazing dogs.

uncoolnn · 25/01/2017 22:22

I have a springer spaniel and he is the best.
He's amazingly intelligent but also stupidly dopey at the same time. Love him to bits Smile

sparechange · 25/01/2017 22:33

tri my friend has one and he is adorable. He has his own Instagram page and I love him!

I'd would love a toller but DH isn't keen. I need to borrow one for a while to convince him. I follow one on instragram called Moxie, and if she wasn't in Norway, I would probably steal her

But until then, my staffie and working lab dream team are the best. Chalk and cheese who go together like peas and carrots

Although in an ideal world, I'd have the brains of the lab with the lack of moulting of the staffie, plus the soppiness of the staff with the impulse control of the lab
Can't decide who is more adorable though

elQuintoConyo · 25/01/2017 22:35

Wire haired fox terrier or Welsh terrier. Or airdale. Or Irish Wolfhound.

I'd call my Irish wolfhound Uula (the aliens' noise from War of the Worlds) just cos it'd be fabulous to shout across moors Grin

I grew up with fox/Welsh terriers.

We have had a 1yo Heinz 57 dog since November. Huge nose. Huge paws. Runs like stink. Stalks crisp packets birds and cats. Must have some speedy hunter in her.

flumpsnlumpsnstuff · 25/01/2017 22:56

Oh my ! I just looked up toller and that's exactly what my old heinz57 looked like but this was in the late 80's given to us by a guy who found him too lively. We then got his other dog two weeks later as he was pining
But he was more beagle and short hair. I always thought he was just a total mix. Thanks mn

BlueKarou · 25/01/2017 23:05

Samoyed, but I'd have to have an extra 15 minutes a day plus an hour a week to groom the thing. I have a half-Samoyed and he's lovely, and the breed have been a firm top-ten contender for me for a long time.

In terms of mixed breeds, my first dog of my very own was, or at least I suspected she was, a labrador x boxer. She was bloody brilliant. I was just saying the other day, I love my current boys, the samoyed x stray terrier thing and the lurcher, but that girl will probably always be my favourite dog.

aliasjoey · 25/01/2017 23:06

I nearly caved and made enquiries about a miniature schnauzer yesterday. Luckily, common sense kicked in (we really can't have another puppy right now)

We already have a toy poodle. It would definitely have to be another non-shedding breed. I love the soft fluffiness of the cockapoos, but there's no guarantee they wouldn't shed.

Empress13 · 25/01/2017 23:06

I've got my ideal dog a Rhodesian a Ridgeback. Loyal, intelligent, faithful and doesn't moult ! Wouldn't be without him. Oh and he's absolutely gorgeous everyone stops me to ask about him.

Beedoo123 · 25/01/2017 23:10

I'd love a Bernese but we don't have room... maybe one day! We have the daftest retriever known to man, but the DC love him Smile

sweetkitty · 25/01/2017 23:15

Empress13 - totally agree Rhodesian Ridgeback all the way x

mamadragon99 · 25/01/2017 23:16

I'd love an Akita! Incredibly loyal and beautiful dogs but not suitable for our lifestyle at the moment :(

WaitrosePigeon · 25/01/2017 23:20

We're on our second Yorkshire Terrier. He's great.

confusednorthner · 25/01/2017 23:21

We've a golden doodle and of all the dogs we've had he's the best. I'd have another tomorrow! Dd would love a cockerpoo and I can see the attraction there too.

JaimeLannister · 25/01/2017 23:25

I have a GSD and a golden retriever. Top of my breed list.

I would also like a Standard poodle, Pembroke Welsh corgi, Belgian tervuren, Rottweiler, Doberman, Papillon, Border collie, Berger Picard, Flat coated retriever and Irish Setter. 😁

I need more money, time and room!

Strokethefurrywall · 25/01/2017 23:26

Newfie or Leonberger.

That being said, I have long haired shepherd retriever mixes and the fucking hair drives me to distraction!!

And we live in Caribbean so not a great place for a heavy coated dog used to romping in the snow...

hahahaIdontgetit · 25/01/2017 23:28

We have greyhounds, I'd love an Irish wolfhound, but we don't have the room......

SarfEast1cated · 25/01/2017 23:32

I love all dogs really, but my heart belongs to Cairn Terriers. 'characterful' and loving and playful, can be picked up if necessary but very happy to run for miles in the woods. I did meet a beautiful set/collection/brace(?) of Portuguese Pointers at a show once, they were gorgeous, Beaglesque but sandy coloured with really friendly happy expressions.

OrlandaFuriosa · 25/01/2017 23:40

Flicka, why filthy? I soo want one. And a saluki, feathered, though they expect obedience from humans, not the other way round. More like cats than dogs in some ways. And a mini long haired dachshund. And a clumber. And an English or Mediterranean pointer.

What did I say we would not get?
1 a puppy
2 a terrier
3 esp not a jrt.

What did we get? The most loving, adorable jrt puppy, now dog. Loves walks, loves cuddles, loves sleeping on you. Unbelievably loyal, brave, intelligent. Downside? Hates postmen.

Wire haired so moults twice a year and the water and dirt fall off him.

Adores DH and DS, has transformed their lives.

Catfreetoagoodhome · 25/01/2017 23:40

We have a Rhodesian Ridgeback as well although ours does moult millions of little brown hairs that get stuck in everything! They are laid back inside but love to run and play outside. Protective but not aggressive and stunning to look at. They won't work for you though. They are an independent hound. They don't need you and have some catlike qualities. I wouldn't be without one.

massi71 · 26/01/2017 07:21

Mine is a Border-Aussie cross.

Utterly beautiful, loving, friendly and ridiculously intelligent. We have to spell words in front of him as he understands what we are talking about!

Blackfellpony · 26/01/2017 12:28

I have German shepherds and love the breed so much that I haven't been able to fit any other breeds in- DH has a 2 dog rule and I feel like one must be a shepherd!

I love Belgian groenendael and considered one but the gene pool is tiny and they are hard to find!

I also would love a leonberger and actually would seriously consider one next.I think one would compliment the shepherds well but I'm not sure I could take the heartbreak of the giant breed lifespan Blush

Richtea83 · 26/01/2017 12:48

I'd love an Irish wolfhound or a deerhound, beautiful, gentle dogs. However we don't have the room and I hate the thought of them having such a short lifespan so instead I have a whippet!

OrlandaFuriosa, filthy because they, like most sighthounds, don't like getting wet and care a lot about comfort. House training is notoriously difficult. Great in summer. Luckily I have the space to paper train them and that works for me far better.

They are utterly lovely, utterly beautiful but very breakable, hate walking in cold weather and wet weather and the house training thing....

SparklyBusinessFuckingFairyNo1 · 26/01/2017 14:17

Another vote for labradoodles. We have 2, both from rescue and they are the funniest loons ever but also the most loyal caring and gentle of dogs. I grew up with poodles and have also had a border collie but can't imagine ever having another breed now.
