What would you have? We already have 2 amazing dogs and are contemplating a 3rd. I'd love to hear about your favourite dog breeds (or cross breeds) and why.

I think the best dog I have ever had in terms of trainability, exercise needs, lovely personality - just general sweetheart - was a collie lurcher. Very laid back but very clever. But I suppose I was lucky and you could get the worst of both breeds

CMOTDibbler · 26/01/2017 14:53

I always love the look of Vizlas and Weimaraners, but I am utterly in love with my greyhound x saluki (in some proportion) and whippet x doberman lurchers.

OneOfTheGrundys · 26/01/2017 18:57

My dream dog is an Alsatian/German Shepherd.

But DH and I both work so we have greyhounds. They get 2 good walks a day, are only on their own for 3 hours at a time and have access to a huge garden but we just don't have the time to do training/agility etc.

I always wanted an Irish wolfhound, but the size is not compatible with our house. I then discovered the Spinone. We were incredibly fortunate to find a puppy when we did, and she has transformed my world. Yes she's enormous, hairy and with an unfortunate penchant for mud, but she's a soft, gentle clown who just wants cuddles all day. Well, cuddles and to one day catch a seagull. I genuinely feel like I've been waiting for her my whole life, and I now can't imagine owning another breed.

My beautiful barky bassett hound. The most affectionate little shadow dog.
She's the funniest, most beautiful (honestly, everybody says so!), intelligent, loving thing in the world.
She's a mix though, possibly with a sharpei so everybody thinks she's a giant sausage dog. She's adorable. I'd choose her. A million times over.

HeadFullofSteam · 27/01/2017 00:13

Ray we also have a beagle so I feel your pain. That said, we adore her.

Greydiddi · 27/01/2017 13:56

Wire haired fox terriers - grew up with them, funny, intelligent and very, very loyal and loving. Plus when not stripped my boy looked like a real life teddy bear. I love the way they sit upright on their haunches with front paws in the air. Big characters but must admit they were hard work though.

I've always also had a hankering for a basset griffon vendeen but again sadly not a sensible choice for my lifestyle now.

Wolfiefan · 27/01/2017 14:03

I've always wanted an Irish Wolfhound. In December I bought my dream hound home.

Mini smooth Dachshund. Had one as a child and the current one is 10 years old.
Loyal, sociable, cuddly and clean. Can walk for miles but also happy to snuggle on my lap in rainy weather.
Will never be without one now.

We love whippets.
We have also got an Italian Greyhound and I second what Flicka says: they are beautiful and very loving but she is nearly two and still not properly housetrained despite us trying everything.
She knows not to go in front of us so she goes into another room and goes there. We try to keep and eye on her all the time but if we are distracted she will take advantage and nip off.
It's a shame as she's adorable otherwise.

squatcher · 27/01/2017 14:30

GSD or Border collie or a mixture of the two. The cleverest, most loyal and friendly dog I ever had was a cross - he was very special and absolutely telepathic.

I currently have a vizsla who is wonderful in many ways (soft, affectionate, intelligent, easy to train in most things, hilarious, incredibly handsome, and poetry in motion when we're out) but he's been a very challenging pup (boundless energy, sensitive, clingy). Getting better all the time though and I know the blood, sweat, and tears are paying off - he may be the ideal dog eventually!

MyGirlDaisy · 27/01/2017 14:44

Greyhound - beautiful, affectionate, quietly regal and so very loyal. Fabulous dogs and so many needing a home, they are very addictive and if I could have a second one I would!

Lancashire Heeler, I lost my boy three months ago and miss him desperately. Wouldn't mind a Collie either my grandparents had them in their farm and they were all such characters my gardwn not big enough for one though.

RubyWinterstorm · 27/01/2017 15:52

gorgeous dogs, esp the greyhound! (but I am biased!!!)

RubyWinterstorm · 27/01/2017 15:53

Too cute Wolfie I have greys and they are beautiful, elegant and stupid beasts.

dawntigga · 28/01/2017 07:25

I'd have a Leonberger, they are brilliant. Don't get me wrong I love our Berner Newfoundland cross, but she looks like a newf and they look a bit dopey for me. Leonbergers are wonderful to look at and you can cart/water/scent train them.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 28/01/2017 07:35

I would have another beagle but they really are little bastards.

If I had the space I would have an Irish Wolfhound or a ChowChow.

Getting a dog in a year or so and current sensible choices are Minature Schnauzer or Dachshund

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 28/01/2017 07:39

Oh, I forgot about Tollers - met some at a dog show and they were fantastic!

weaselwords · 28/01/2017 07:41

I love my weimaraner with all my heart. I love to watch her run and hunt. Sadly, I am usually watching her do this from three fields away, so I am currently hankering after something steady with good recall.

I met a russian black terrier in my local park. Now he was a magnificent beast.

Whatslovegottodo · 28/01/2017 07:41

I have rescue terrier mutts and they are amazing!
All 3 are affectionate, hardy, intelligent, flexible, trainable, do dog sports like agility and rally -o. One is a therapy dog. They are cute and foot motivated and love kids. Yes the one who is mostly JRT has a strong prey drive but only to chase has never caught anything, does enjoy rolling in fox poo however!!
The border terrier x is the bestest family pet in the world and if I was to look for a breed a border terrier would be the one.
However I do have a soft spot for Bichon Frise too!! and every other dog
