what's wrong with my dog

Just had to take doggy to the emergency vets, she's pacing, crying, panting, can lie, can't sit, pawing at her bed, going outside and doing nothing, staring at her arse. They are keeping her in for xrays but I'm so worried, she's been such a poorly dog and she's only 3

Could she be pregnant?

Nope, definitely not, she was done at 6 months

It could be a lot of things, many of which such as infected anal glands and a sore tummy are not too serious. I hope it is one of those things and that you find out soon and get some sleep tonight. She is in the best place for it though. The vets are highly trained and have the equipment. I hope you are uupdating us soon to say she just did the most massive diarrhoea over the vet in revenge for a tummy prod, and then demanded some dinner. Which is the sort of thing my mardy animals would do just to embarrass me.

The vet emptied her glands when we were there and there wasn't much in there. She's just to say they tried to do xray without sedation but doggers isn't having any of it. They given her a painkiller and are going to try again in half hour, if not they'll sedate her. They said it probably best if they keep her overnight but will call as soon as they done xrays, hopefully before midnight

Hope she is ok. Sounds like something sudden rather than an ongoing problem.

If definitely sudden, she's been fine all day. We've been trying to keep her calm as she's one month into a 3 month recovery from cruciate surgery, and all she's wanted to do is play in the snow. She was asleep for a good hour and then woke up and the symptoms started

Hope she's doing better this morning. She's lush, that's for sure! Could she have aggravated the cruciate ligament? My dog had that done a few years ago and it was a long old recovery with quite a few blips on the way. Hope the vet calls soon.

Have spoken with vets, they haven't xrayed under sedation as yet but they are planning on doing it this morning.

It's definitely not her leg, she's fine with it being manipulated and she's walking fine etc. I don't think she would have eaten anything dodgy as we're watching her all the time due to the op. We go outside with her and if we go out of the room she's crated to stop her jumping on the furniture etc. She was in such distress, I cried all the way to work this morning as there's absolutely nothing I can do for her

So is she no better ? TBH I think your vets sound a bit bizarre I would have stayed last night until she had been xrayed . Hope you get some news soon .

Just had another of the vets call me, he said she's been on morphine overnight and seems a lot more comfortable. She's not done a poo since teatime yesterday and she's normally like clockwork, morning, afternoon, evening. He said they haven't done the xray yet but he's going to run some bloods to check all her organs are fine. Got to ring back at 3 if I haven't heard anything.

It's not our usual vet, it's the OOH practice affiliated with ours

Why don't they just do a bloody xray. If she hasn't pooed then surely that is symptomatic of a blockage

(disclaimer - I have no veterinary knowledge just years of horses and suspected colics)

We gave them our permission to sedate her for the xray last night, don't know why they didn't just do it then.

They did say they'd had lots of emergencies so maybe they're just busy I guess. It's weird, in a way I want them to find something so I know what we're dealing with. What if they just don't find anything and send us on our way? Wonder if dogs get indigestion?

Barrel chested dogs can get twisted guts.

I think I would have asked for her to be transferred back to your usual vet this morning first thing , I really wouldn't be happy with the 'we had lots of emergencies' response , your dog could potentially have a serious condition ,being masked by the morphine making her look comfortable . I doubt indigestion would make her stare at her rear end .

That's what I was saying to my mum last night, surely the meds will just mask the symptoms. They said she's comfortable but I'm not surprised if she's on morphine. I'm at work today, I guess I'll just wait and see what they say after the next xray, not a lot I can do from here.

Has she been on NSAIDs since her surgery? They can have gastro side effects.

Hi Tabulah she's been on NSAIDs (Onsior) since she was 6 months old, due to elbow dysplasia, and is now 3. She has regular blood tests with our vet just to make sure it's not affecting her organs.

They had a lot of emergencies?? Surely your dog is an emergency!

Mine was on them from about 4 months for the same reason...they made him ill when he was about 2.

Different symptoms, but just putting it out there as a possibility because it sounds like intestine or stomach pain.
