what's wrong with my dog

Just had to take doggy to the emergency vets, she's pacing, crying, panting, can lie, can't sit, pawing at her bed, going outside and doing nothing, staring at her arse. They are keeping her in for xrays but I'm so worried, she's been such a poorly dog and she's only 3 Sad

Will see what they say when I ring at 3, I've made a provisional appointment at my vets tomorrow dependent on what they say.

Thanks for listening everyone, I appreciate it

So, an update. Vet's just called, xray shows a little bit of faecal matter in her upper bowel but nothing to speak of, nothing that would cause constipation or obstruction. They've run bloods and nothing out of the ordinary showing up. He said it could be because of the length of time she's been on the NSAIDs, this can affect dogs after a length of time and she's been on them for 2.5 years. They are keeping her in for tonight at my request whilst they reduce the pain meds and will see how she is overnight. They've also given her some antacids to see if that helps as it could be acid reflux but again, nothing showing up.

So not really any further on but glad it's nothing sinister

How worrying. I'm glad they didn't find anything too sinister though. Keep us updated Flowers

mrslaughan · 18/01/2016 17:10

So they have ruled out bloat? Torsion of the spleen or stomach?

KinkyAfro · 18/01/2016 20:37

I'm presuming rightly or wrongly that the clear xray has ruled that out mrs

OP posts:
mrslaughan · 18/01/2016 21:19

The spleen would be ultrasound, stomach I am not sure..... I am not a vet - it's just those are two conditions you have to worry about with my deep chested breed........
Has she pooed yet? The other thing would be a blockage.......
I would be worried that the vet is a little relaxed, it's great that she has been made comfortable (morphine) , but yes I would be concerned that they are masking a potentially serious situation......

tabulahrasa · 19/01/2016 00:04

Not a vet either, but I think things like bloat or a torsion, well they're faster acting than that aren't they? As in, they're fatal within a fairly short time?

A blockage should show up on x-ray.

I'd be expecting an ultrasound as well tbh.

ExitPursuedByABear · 19/01/2016 11:03

Your right tab A twisted gut would have ended badly if not treated quickly.

Hope you get some positive news today op.

KinkyAfro · 19/01/2016 13:35

Hi all, well she's home with my mum at the moment, DP picked her up earlier. Nothing has shown up on the blood tests or xrays, they reduced the pain meds overnight and they said she'd been fine, no sign she wasn't comfortable etc. They've sent her home with some antacids and said it could be because of long term use of anti flams, but again nothing showing up on bloods. They've recommended we stop using the NSAID she was on but haven't recommended another so I've got a call in to my usual vet to ask for some advice. Mum knows if there's any problems then she's to take her in urgently so I've no worries on that score. She did say she's been a bit whiny since she got home but I'm hoping that's the morphine come down as she was like this last time she was on it

I've just got home and dog is seriously sad, how do I differentiate between pain and drug withdrawal Sad

Floralnomad · 19/01/2016 20:28

Is she eating ,drinking ,weeing and pooing as usual ?

Slimmingcrackers · 19/01/2016 20:30

Oh dear KinkyAfro that must be so very worrying and stressful.

Do you have the number of an emergency vet on hand for tonight (just in case you need it - hopefully you won't).

Is she pooing normally? What did your usual vet say?

She looks so lovely in the photo. Hope things improve for her and you overnight.

ExitPursuedByABear · 19/01/2016 20:31

Dogs aren't sad.

Ok exit, she seems sad.

She's been for a poo and lots of wees as she's been drinking a lot, has also had some food which she scoffed down. Our vet said it's probably the after effects of anaesthetic and morphine. She's actually a lot quieter now, been sleeping on and off, little bit of whinging in between but nothing like earlier. Vet also said to see how she is and if she shows any more symptoms then he'd recommend a scope to check intestines and stomach.

Pancreatitis has been ruled out

Vet said no sign of p

Slimmingcrackers · 19/01/2016 21:22

She certainly does look a bit down in the dumps!

Great that she is eating and drinking and pooing and weeing normally though! That can only be a good sign! Hope they can get to the bottom of it soon.

KinkyAfro · 19/01/2016 21:39

She's not shown any sign of the issues pre vet visit so I'm hoping she'll be ok. Got antacids for 5 days and she's not having nsaid for a while.

Fingers crossed

BatteryOperatedBoyfriend · 19/01/2016 21:57

Did she have a limp tail? Had she been swimming.

Sounds a little like cold water tail. My lab has had that before, similar symptoms.

KinkyAfro · 19/01/2016 21:59

No, she not been swimming since September when we were in the lakes. Nowhere to swim outdoors round here really

OP posts:
Slimmingcrackers · 20/01/2016 07:58

Dashing out for day and won't be back until late, but how dog been overnight Kinky? How is he this morning? Fingers crossed for you both.

KinkyAfro · 20/01/2016 11:22

She's a bit less whingy, didn't want to eat all her food, was more interested in the chicken I was preparing for my lunch. At least she's got an appetite though so I'm happy with that. Mum has her today so I'm sure I'll get regular progress reports during the day

OP posts:
Shriek · 20/01/2016 11:55

hello Kinky

my first thought was bloat and also should be one of the first thoughts for vets to investigate as emergency and can lead to fast fatality, labs more susceptible. If you are not sure, do make sure to ask (if you haven't already by now).

the other is blockage, does she chew on bones (particularly knuckle ends with cartilage which causes blockages), especially as no 'output'!

so distressing for you all.

I'm glad to hear she's still with us, and feeling hungry! thats really good to hear Smile. She really could have picked up anything, something discarded over your fence into the garden, or a treat whilst out snuffling amongst bushes.

keepiing everything crossed she's on the mend

KinkyAfro · 20/01/2016 12:10

Thanks Shriek, I did mention bloat and they've ruled it out. There's definitely no blockage, nothing showing on the xray and she's had a massive poo (TMI I know) this morning so all good on that front.

Mum just messaged to say she's still a bit whiny but she's been sleeping on and off so I'm hoping it's still the drug come down. I know a few people who have said their pets have been really weird for a few days after morphine

OP posts:
Shriek · 20/01/2016 12:53

fab news [the poo!] exactly the right amount of information Grin in this situation. that is brilliant that this part of her is in full working order!

does she seem better in herself now? (difficult to tell i know, because of the morphine come down, but she's behaving normally otherwise?), and her poo was normal? apart from being massive, did you check it to see nothing abnormal in it that could have caused the pain? if its enormous, that might indicate there was a problem passing it which caused her such pain. Often x-rays can't show a lot that gets ingested. i do hope she's better after this.

what advice, if any have they given re food?
