what's wrong with my dog

Just had to take doggy to the emergency vets, she's pacing, crying, panting, can lie, can't sit, pawing at her bed, going outside and doing nothing, staring at her arse. They are keeping her in for xrays but I'm so worried, she's been such a poorly dog and she's only 3 Sad

Hi Shriek, the poo was big but not particularly firm but it was poo coloured, no blood from what I could see...I actually poked about with a stick and a torch Grin She's weeing a bit more than normal but she's been drinking a lot, I think because of having the tube down her throat. She's always drank a lot after coming round from sedation.

She's wagging her tail, bringing teddies to us, albeit not as enthusiastically as usual but again, hopefully the drugs.

Thanks for replying, I worry so much about her and sometimes don't know what to do for the best

all sounds good! Smile

she must be feeling very odd as the morphine leaves her system.

bloody DC & DPets all the same aren't they bringing worries and feeling helpless! but sounds like she's doing really well.

What did they say about food? whats she been having. so nothing in the poo then. i don't think cartilage will show if she's gnawed that off a bone and it stuck, i'm not sure, but certainly if you x-ray a dpup the cartilage holding joints together doesn't show. keep an eye on the drinking/weeing to make sure it gets back to normal, any blood in wee? did vets test it?

We don't give her bones so no issues there. She's on a prescription dog food, a weight management one as she is prone to weight gain and with her legs (elbow dysplasia and cruciate) she needs to be as light as she can. She's on a mix of kibble and tinned food as advised by weight management consultant

Wee's fine, pale straw colour, definitely no blood in it. Not sure if vet tested it though

Sorry, she does have 1 bone which is a massive knuckle end but there's nothing missing from it and she's had it since she was 1 Grin

I hope it just turns out to be one of those mysteries that clears up, never comes back and you never figure out.

What is cold water tail?

And my dog can look sad.

Well she's a lot quieter now, no whining since I brought her home, still below par but a lot better. Mum's taking a wee sample from her to my usual vets tomorrow for testing, just to rule out any infection, although her temp's been fine all through this. I just want to ensure I've covered all bases

So you were Blush I think I meant dogs shouldn't be sad, therefore there must be something wrong with her.

A quick update, dog appears fine now, she's stopped whining and is back to bring her usual happy self. We're hoping to get the urine sample to the vets tomorrow to rule anything out. This has happened before so I do think it needs further investigation so we're considering the scope to check her intestines and stomach lining etc. But for now she's happy. Thanks for all your advice and help, it's much appreciated Flowers

so glad she's out of the woods for now.

You didn't say this had happened before, what did the vet say last time?

btw you can't see blood in urine, depends on how much blood.

Feeding advice??? what are you feeding her and what did the vet say about food? I didn't mean the bone before. Does seem quite crucial based on the lack of/massive poo.

how did they rule out bloat? especially as this is repeating.

I hope investigations go well/quick so you can avoid another excruciating repeat for her. good luck Flowers

Vet couldn't find anything last time either Shriek. I don't know what they did to rule out bloat but when I phoned to check up on her, they said it wasn't Confused. We're taking her to our regular vet tomorrow for a thorough MOT so I might have more to tell you tomorrow Smile

With regards to food, the weight management clinic have her on royal canin satiety dry and wet. They've given us recommended weights I.e 234g split into 2 meals or 1 410g tin + 142g dry split into 2

i hope you get something clearer from your regular vet tomorrow. its such a worry isn't it Sad presumably this is the vet that managed her previous event so it might build a picture for them.

whilst unsure whether its gastric, personally, it'd avoid dry food, puts a lot more demand on the system.

The previous episode and this one were both the emergency vets as they started at silly times in the night. She was in for 3 nights the first time, 2 nights this time. By the time we got her back and to our vets last time she wasn't showing any symptoms, and it was put down to pain from her bad cruciate. We didn't know any different at the time
