Do you get asked if you will sell your dog?

Been to the local town today. Eric always gets plenty of attention because he's cute I think and loves a fuss from anyone who asks.
Twice today we've been asked if we'd sell him to them Hmm one even asked how much we wanted and to name our price when we said he isn't for sale and the other thought he'd be a great Christmas present for his wife and kids.
It's not the first time we've been asked but it seems so odd to me, Eric's our dog for life not a commodity to be traded.
So do people really walk up to complete strangers and ask to buy their dog or is it just that we happen to bump into a fair few weirdos?

You don't have a lurcher/hound of some sort do you?
I have a deerhound and am always being asked by strangers if I want to sell her.

I get asked to sell my Bichon then I tell them she is 9years old and spayed then they change their mind. Funny that.Hmm

We used to get asked all the time, when my parents had a Springer Spaniel. No one asks now we have an (adorable but non-pedigree) Maltese x Cavalier.

Oh so people really do think that it's worth asking to buy a stranger's dog Shock how odd! I see lots of nice dogs but it would never have entered my head to ask to buy them.
Danny, no not a hound a shih tzu/ poodle cross, he's small and cute and very friendly so maybe that's what appeals.

Do you get asked if you will sell your dog?

When lurch-bob was young and very athletic we had a white van pull over and a couple of shady looking blokes ask us the price for him.

I have friends with lurchers and hounds and we often get asked if we wish to sell our dogs (especially my friend who has a very fine light brindle lurcher) often to men in vans. They soon loose interest in my dog when I say that she is neutered and has epilepsy Wink
She is neutered but is as fit as a fiddle.
It is worrying sometimes and makes us a little paranoid.

Oh, cute! We've had people ask us where we got our dog, and if they had other puppies for sale but no firm offers.

I can remember my dad telling someone his life wouldn't be worth living, if he went home with £100 and no dog!

Another lurcher owner who is always being asked 'how much'?
I always inform them she's spayed (true) and has epileptic fits if she doesn't take her VERY EXPENSIVE medication (not true!).

I just find it so odd. Eric's our first family dog and coming up to a year old I sometimes feel I entered a whole new world when I became a dog owner. So many things I never knew not only being asked to buy him but things like I never knew how much you could love a dog, how big a part of your family they become, what good company they are and how fellow dog walkers are, by and large, pretty nice and decent people and very patient with a puppy still learning his manners.

My sister was at a car boot selling some stuff and had her two border terriers with her. She had quite a few people asking how much she wanted for them then get funny when she explained they were pets and weren't for sale. In the end she left early as it was too much hassle.

When my GSDx was a pup she looked like a pedigree and I was asked all the time.

People were genuinely shocked when I told them to bugger off.

Hound owner here too.

I have a whippet and a terrier. People assume they are working dogs because of the combination of breeds I own and often ask if they're proven or how much I'd take for them.

I explain that they're not for sale, one is a grumpy, nasty, snappy twat of a dog, who fails at being a dog when it comes to chasing rabbits out of undergrowth and the other is frightened of rabbits and pretty much anything else that moves, regardless of whether or not this anything else happens to be part of her, such as her tail or her farts. They tend to leave me alone after that.

Someone actually tried to get hold of the lead of my Dad's bull lurcher, whilst stuffing a bunch of £20 notes into his free hand, luckily the other dogs, who were running loose, heard the commotion and saw this bloke off, who dropped one the notes on his way. My Dad was shaken but said it was worth the £20 Grin (he's a big bloke, even without the other dogs, there's no way anyone would get his dog from him without him putting up a good fight)

I was going to say to ask them if they'd sell one of their kids...but maybe not, you might find yourself with a random 6 year old.

What I've never understood is that if our (mine and my dad's) dogs were proven workers and worked well as a team why on earth would we sell them for the paltry amounts of money we are often offered for them? As I understand it takes a lot of work and a huge amount of luck to get a good working team.

As it is we just happened to come across them needing rescue and ended up with a bunch of lurchers, terriers and whippets by accident. They wouldn't know work if it smacked them in the face.

I have, several times, I've also been followed twice, once whilst out walking near to home and once in the car. It was pretty frightening when I was out walking and I had to call DP and get him to come and collect us in the car, I didn't dare walk home as I didn't want the blokes following me to know where we live.

I have 2 dogs, a whippet and a relatively rare and unusual looking chinese crested hairless, I've only ever been offered money for the whippet.

I've got three whippets and I've never once been asked to sell them or offered money for them.

I do get a lot of "Are they baby greyhounds?" and "They must take a lot of walking!" though Grin

I used to get asked about my last dog come to think of it...he looked a bit lurchery (don't know what he actually was as he was a stray from a pound).

Sadly no-one ever asks about the muzzled rottie with huge health and behavioural issues, most days I'd gladly sell him, lol

Yes. And I have been offered 'studs' asked how old she is is she a female how old can we take a look. Makes me paranoid wary.
