Do you get asked if you will sell your dog?

Been to the local town today. Eric always gets plenty of attention because he's cute I think and loves a fuss from anyone who asks.
Twice today we've been asked if we'd sell him to them Hmm one even asked how much we wanted and to name our price when we said he isn't for sale and the other thought he'd be a great Christmas present for his wife and kids.
It's not the first time we've been asked but it seems so odd to me, Eric's our dog for life not a commodity to be traded.
So do people really walk up to complete strangers and ask to buy their dog or is it just that we happen to bump into a fair few weirdos?

Sorry I mean how old/is she spayed.

TheCunnyFunt · 23/12/2014 07:46

No I haven't, the muzzle must put them off. I'm often hearing about this happening though, also have heard a few times about (mainly) women being mugged for their dog, which is normally a sighthound :(

Bubble2bubble · 23/12/2014 08:59

I have never been asked for my pack of muttley mongrels, but a friend who has a very beautiful young rescue whippet has been offered hundreds and followed several times :(

Lovelydiscusfish · 23/12/2014 09:09

We've occasionally been offered money for our working cocker, who, although we don't work her, is very fit, and looks a lot younger than she is!

BabeRuthless · 23/12/2014 14:17

I got an offer for our pup when I took her out on one of her very first walks. It was from a drunk guy who then tried to pick her up and introduce her to a massive snarling dog who was barely being kept under control by its owner. I got out of there as quick as I could but took great satisfaction in seeing dpup wee on the drunk guys leg!

GothMummy · 23/12/2014 14:26

No one asks to buy my labrador but I used to get asked a lot when I had a greyhound and a lurcher.

JoffreyBaratheon · 23/12/2014 14:34

I used to get asked by dodgy youths if my staffy was available for the lady staffies (no - he had no nuts) and people wanting puppies from my bull terrier (no - she was a well known show winner - you really couldn't afford her puppies at over a thousand quid a pop and a two year long waiting list - and then she went blind with a genetic problem so was irresponsible to breed from her anyway). So it's more my dogs' reproductive capabilities that seemed to interest weirdos, not buying them as such...

These days it's easier for chavs to get bait dogs (just go on Gumtree/FB). So I doubt I'll get asked with my current devil dog.

UpWithPup · 23/12/2014 14:39

No offers to buy dpup, but 4 people have asked about his breeder in the last week. Its never happened before this week and has made me wonder if its because Christmas is round the corner.

needastrongone · 23/12/2014 14:42

Any offer over a £5 and that's my two gone Xmas Grin

ResponsibleAdult · 23/12/2014 15:43

I would drop my dogs off but DC won't let me.

One loves to flush wildlife out. The other loves to go down holes and bite things, any thing. Individually they are fine. However they work brilliantly as a team and are clearly successful judging by the vets bill for stitches.

Makes me very unhappy, as I don't agree with terrorising wildlife, so they stay on leads if I know wildlife is present, ie most of the time. Or get walked seperately.

Neither are breeds you would expect to see white van man with so maybe that's why I don't get offers, they conceal their true nature with innocuous good looks and cute faces. Unless you come too close and then their true nature is quickly apparent.

Bloody irritating.

Takver · 23/12/2014 15:52

Not buy - but when ddog was a puppy a bloke first offered to swap him for a goat, and when DH turned him down, he upped his offer to a goat in kid.

Fortunately, DH said no . . . . not sure the goat + kid would have fitted so well under the kitchen counter Grin

(This was in Spain, and ddog is podenco x husky, imagine he was wanted for hunting or as a guard dog)

BastardSnowDarkly · 23/12/2014 15:56

I got asked by a bloke who actually pulled out a cheque book and told me to name my price, for my boxer x lurcher. A month later, He was stolen, it took me a month to get him back. fucking pykies

Takver · 23/12/2014 15:57

These days what I do get is people asking all the time what breed he is (as in, I do well to get through a walk without being stopped) - it's perfectly normal for people to stop their cars in order to ask.

Chrismoosemama · 23/12/2014 15:58

I used to get followed and harassed regularly when I had a particularly striking, very large GSD x Boxer lad and lived in the city. Sadly we lived in an area known to be really bad for dog-fighting rings and I used to have to go to great lengths to make sure I wasn't followed home.

Someone must have worked out where I lived eventually though, as we were broken into, but nothing taken and the Police's theory was that they were after the dog. Fortunately for us/him he was both dog and people fear aggressive and saw them off the property, unfortunately he sustained nasty injuries to all four feet chasing them over the splintered back gate and glass from the broken window. He then waited patiently for us to come home, whereas our Sheltie x Whippet girl fled in panic - fortunately returning home after a few hours. Sad Angry

I now have two Lurchers and am regularly asked about them in great detail and have been asked if I'd sell them several times. I just tell them both are neutered, one is an old boy who has arthritis and can't run for toffee and the other has a heart condition, is scared of his own shadow and couldn't catch a rabbit to save his life. That puts them off.

Have to say though, that we never get hassle where we live, it's only when we've taken them out and about elsewhere that we've been stopped.

gaggiagirl · 23/12/2014 16:07

Our lurcher boy is often lusted after. 4 men in barbours asked me to name a price for him at a country show once. They soon cleared off once DH rounded the corner.

PersonalClown · 23/12/2014 16:33

I have. Strangely for the Staffy, not the Doodle.

Count Staffula is tan coloured which is an 'undesirable' colour according to breed standards but he is flecked with blue throughout and has blue ears and tail.
Apparently this means his Blue gene is likely to be dominant and that is the highly desired Staffy colour. So he (in theory) should pass on the blue gene to any pups.

Shame I had him debollocked at just over a year.Grin

I would have thought that BYBs would have wanted the Doodle to breed more 'designer' pups to flog to the gullible for hundreds of pounds.

glammanana · 23/12/2014 16:46

BastardSnowDarkly Same thing happened to us when we lived abroad,we had only been there 4 months and had bought a Bulldog pup (we had them in uk previously) and we where stopped by same people and asked to sell her when we refused they said "what would you do if we just took her" it was a good job my 2 sons where with me at the time,we kept her indoors for quite a while after that in case she went on the missing list.

digerd · 23/12/2014 17:30

In our area recently dogs have been stolen during their walks - so prumably were off the lead.
DD warned me but I don't let mine off the lead since she mischievously left her beloved ball to tease 2 elderly cockers who were on the lead and ignored my recallBlush.
DD's policeman neighbour did not say which breeds if any were favoured.

Someone offered to buy my Labrador when she was younger, or failing that asked for us to let her have a litter of puppies.
We seriously considered it, but decided not to as our house is tiny and wouldn't cope with loads of mini Labradors running round it.

youmakemydreams · 29/12/2014 19:39

Yes have been asked to sell her. She is a Dalmatian and her spot distribution is lovely. She has such a pretty face and is only 2. Tbh if someone did buy her they would bring her back quick smart.
She is a total arse hole at times and doesn't reslise she is not dp's girlfriend Hmm whenever anyone mentions the dog she wonders when we are getting one. Grin she is bloody clever but channels stupid really well. She is grumpy and the laziest Dalmatian I have ever met. But very loving. Don't think anyone else would put up with her.

AcrossthePond55 · 29/12/2014 19:55

We used to get regular offers for our Chocolate Lab. She was a 'field' lab not a 'blockhead' and was (if I say so) a beautiful dog. We had her spayed at around 6 and the offers pretty much stopped once the 'buyers' knew she was spayed.

Littledragon13 · 30/12/2014 09:36

All the time! Travellers mostly but I'm pretty sure most people would bring him back in a few days time demanding their money back. He's a wonderfully cute parsons jack russell (I'm bias I know but I'm yet to see a better looking one!) but he is a weirdo

Greymalkin · 30/12/2014 09:58

Years ago we had an enormous muscular English Mastif who was very impressive looking, we we're always asked by very dodgy looking men whether we'd sell him or put him to stud. 'D'F was completely deluded about what a lovely dog he was, thd apple of his eye blah blah blah so always refused.

Good thing too, that dog was a fucking psycho that terrified the whole family. It bit three people, attacked at least two other dogs (in one occasion charging through a random house to do so) and slaughtered 20 chickens on a neighbours farm.

It was a stray that 'D'F decided to rescue from the side of the road... Inevitably it was put to sleep. Best thing really Sad
