Help - a Lovely but heavily pregnant Lurcher turned up at my door today

I know it's late & I know there's a thread for pointy hound lovers, but I seem to have acquired a heavily pregnant Lurcher, she was lurking round my house all day - very rural no near neighbours, every time I looked out the door she was there, very underfed but sweet & extremely sociable, after about three hours I crumbled & fed her, at which point I noticed she was HEAVILY pregnant & rather skinny.

I've taken her to the Vets', no chip, no report, so she's come back here, she had a show of mucus at the vets' and has been intermittently been panting very heavily, I've phoned the vet again (who luckily are personal friends) who told me how to do an internal, couldn't feel anything yet, so I guess it's just a waiting game.

I've had dogs in the past, but DOGS, never bitches & I've never whelped a pup in me life.

Help & hand-holds would be lovely.

Shamelessly place marking too. So excited for you and really rather jealous. Hope all goes well tonight if things start happening.

mimiasovitch · 21/10/2014 23:45

Have just rtt, and am almost tempted to get out of bed to see the pics on my computer. Am looking forward to some lovely news tomorrow Smile.

winkywinkola · 21/10/2014 23:48

Gosh. Place marking too.

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 23:50

Righto, have ordered the vet bedding, thanks for the tip, looks like the best thing for the job, just hope she can hold out until all the stuff arrives, may find ourselves improvising here. Rather annoyingly I just had a massive clearout and got rid of all the old towels etc, grrr.

Do you have any ky jelly in case she needs help giving birth? Sometimes a pup can get stuck in the birth canal and she will need help (if she's straining a lot and getting nowhere)

Also I hope you have an on call vet who's able to come out at a moments notice just in case something goes wrong (it won't though, you will be fine and she will breeze through it.. But better be on the safe side)

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 23:57

Yep, have the on call number for the vet, think I might go to bed and try and grab some sleep, she doesn't seem to be doing anything at the moment and is happily napping, should be ok shouldn't it?

Will have look at the link, thanks again Nanny.

Sorry for inundating you with posts/questions.. Just trying to think of my past experiences of sitting up all night with a whelping bitch... Brings back lots of happy magical memories!

NannyOggsCat · 22/10/2014 00:00

Yes she sounds fine and settled.. Get some sleep

She will probably let you know when she's ready as she may get panicky and clingy and may even try to make a nest or hide somewhere... Or she may just get on with it while you sleep and surprise you in the morning!

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 22/10/2014 00:03

No need to apologise at all, you've been amazingly
helpful and I think I need all the help I can get here, despite my frantic preparations she will no doubt sneak off and have them in the most inconvenient place in the house!

OP posts:
NannyOggsCat · 22/10/2014 00:07

If she sneaks off and has them she may not be feeling safe, and as she isn't your dog she may become very protective and aggressive.. This is just her natural instinct so try not to worry.. If she does this try not to interact with the pups if she is coping well and just focus on her, praise her and offer her food and drink. She will eventually relax.

TidyDancer · 22/10/2014 00:09

Ooh this is exciting! I love a live birth thread, one with gorgeous pups is even better!

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 22/10/2014 00:11

Will do, the vet mentioned she may do that, I'm hoping she'll be a competent mother so she requires as little of my wholly incompetent help as possible...

Am off to bed now, thanks again & here's to a peaceful night.
