Please can I have all of your pull through vibes please. I took on a 13year old staffy 2 days ago. She is the sweetest dog I have ever met but came down quickly with vomiting and diarrhea, this morning the discharge started heavily and she was rushed to emergency Vets. She has been stabilised with fluids, antibiotics and painkillers and is now heading to theatre for pyometra. I feel hopeless

Fantastic. So pleased.

I know a couple of people dog walking with ageing unspayed bitches and am always banging on about it but it doesn't seem to sink in. My rescue staffie had the beginnings of it when she was dumped but luckily so early she wasn't ill with it.

Claimedbyme your dog is beautiful. Molly has just got home and is a bit bewildered bless her

Thankyou everyone for your lovely messages, the vets have shed some light on her past. She roped over with her tail between her legs with anyone new so shes been hit. She's blind, but worst of all her teeth are stumps. The vets said she would of been locked in something over a long period and has tried to chew her way out over a long time. Heartbreaking

That's horrible :( poor thing.

Makes what you have done, giving her a home even more special.

Acolyte · 30/07/2014 12:32

So glad to hear you have her home.
It's a good thing you've done, taking in an oldie.

Late to this, but I'm so glad to hear your news. Patch sends this picture of solidarity, from one lucky Staffy to another. Smile

Poor Molly, some of the dogs in rescue have had a really terrible time, the list for my staffy goes on about her past and then after being spoiled by us she then got cancer in her eye but she's such a fighter and never complains!

She will be eternally grateful for your sofa, food and love :)

Toooldtobearsed · 30/07/2014 13:50

That is super news, I am so happy for you both. You really are wonderful taking on a golden oldie, I admire you so much for doing that Thanks

Fingers crossed for you both!

DogAndBeardedDragon · 30/07/2014 16:17

I'm still so worried, she still hasn't eaten or had a drink and is so sleepy, she looks doped to eye balls. The vets have said not to worry and keep offering her food/water hourly. I have to get her moving to, just a potter around garden. Really praying she doesn't have to go back in tomorrow. Thankyou for all your messages of support

She's old so it may take her longer to fully recover from the anaesthetic. The water is obviously the main issue here, would you be able to syringe feed her little and often? See of she will take some that way?

But obviously do it really slowly to make sure she swallows the water properly?

What kind of food does she have? If it's wet food could you mix it to a paste with some water and see if she will lick little bits off your fingers?

Gileswithachainsaw · 30/07/2014 16:22

To h&m though I expect she just needs to sleep it off for a bit, what time does the vets shut? If she hasn't drunk anything by closing time maybe ring back?

Gileswithachainsaw · 30/07/2014 16:23

?? With typos again.

To be honest though- not h&m

lougle · 30/07/2014 16:27

Patch didn't drink for the whole day that he came home and was decidedly meh about food. It gradually picked up as the days went by.

I put a bit of water in my hand and rubbed his muzzle with it -he doesn't like a wet face so he had to lick it off.

DogAndBeardedDragon · 30/07/2014 16:36

The vets have said to syringe little and often if she doesn't start drinking later, she's just had a few syringes of water with her metacam and antibiotics. She's only allowed chicken and rice at the moment. I couldn't of done any of this without Molly's rescue back up, they are wonderful.

:) well that's fab you got her medicine down her. Hopefully when it's a bit cooler later and she's rested she will start eating and drinking on her own.

EvenBetter · 30/07/2014 18:34

I'm so happy for her, go Molly! Sounds like she's had a fookin horrible life, how lucky she is to have you now!
Old dogs break your heart every day, and also make your heart burst with love and pride multiple times a day.

Dogs can suffer when they get low blood sugar and a lot of little and big illnesses make them go off their food. If she's not eating offer her some golden syrup (pure sugar) to lick, or rub it on her gums.

My girl is getting neutered on Monday!

DogAndBeardedDragon · 30/07/2014 18:49

Thankyou evenbetter that is a good idea will give that ago, shes just had a big wee outside, very nearly had a drink but changed her mind last minute. The anesthetic is starting to wear off now and she's getting a little whiney and fidgety which is horrible to see but atleast she's more with it. Made a bed up for us on sofa and she's glued to me bless her heart

Oh yes, that's the other thing -Patch weed like a train and only started drinking after several big wees -I think the iv fluids had filled him up and he needed to rebalance.

DogAndBeardedDragon · 30/07/2014 19:03

Thankyou, I was worried about that but your right she won't stop weeing so I hope she does same and has a drink later when fluids from drip are out her system

ClaimedByMe · 30/07/2014 22:46

I know you said she's blind but the way her eyes are transfixed on you in such an adoring trusting way, I hope you both have a settled night.

The vets picked up cataracts and she has walked into things occasionally here so I think it's partial blindness. I have been up with her all night, she had a tiny bit of chicken at midnight and has now just eaten a small bowl of it, she would of happily eaten more but going to stick to little and often. I'm so pleased :) she's exploring the garden more on wee stops now rather than just going and coming in. So proud of her.

DogandBeardedDragon · 31/07/2014 06:23

Probably TMI but shes had a poo :) I'm so relieved. She seems so hungry so bulking chicken and rice up with a tiny bit of natures diet. She looks so much better, just had her antibiotic and I think I'm happy to say shes on road to recovery :) go Molly
