Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

Ah, we're in Hackney mistlethrush - but thank you anyway, what a lovely thought. Didn't have a chance to call the kennels today (after the insurance company and Dog Warden and a very very crap day at work). He seems to be getting more chipper and DH said he was OK on his walk this morning.

The injury is high enough up his throat and shoulder that he can just about wear his house coat with the collar turned right down so he's still dapper and warm Scuttle ! No appointments at the vet today but he's in tomorrow evening to check the progress of the wound. Looks OK to me but who knows!

mistlethrush · 11/03/2013 21:14

Not seen so many recommendations for this one, but that might be because more of the relevant people rae in the north rather than the south - but again another pointy recommendation here

MrSlant · 13/03/2013 08:21

Sorry, been away because of some cruddy family circumstances but someone just slagged off whippets on a thread in the doghouse Shock. It's the one about which small dog or something. They said whippets were boring and 'glass half empty' types.

mistlethrush · 13/03/2013 09:13

They clearly haven't seen the whippets get going on race day or indeed whizzing through the park at high speed! I must say that some pointy dogs can give a bit of a sad expression when they're on a lead - often ears back along their heads (mine included) but when they suddenly see something its completely different....

CMOTDibbler · 13/03/2013 10:42

Whippets boring? I have no idea what whippets they have seen, though I know what Mistle means about on the lead.

Hope things are better in the family soon MrSlant. I've been having a manky family time too

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 13/03/2013 19:08

ShockShockShock at the thought of a boring whippet Shock I hope everything is ok MrS, cruddy family circumstances can be really, well, cruddy :o

Betsey how's Billy today?

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 13/03/2013 19:14

CMOT I hope your manky family time gets better soon :)

MrSlant · 13/03/2013 20:51

Cunny, you've been through the same recently haven't you though? Although darling bil has rather hurt his head whilst his body is in pretty good shape. Critical Care is just Not Fun. We are just fingers crossed that some of him will wake up, the plus side being the hospital he is in is not too far from the glorious Scuttlebutter and her pack, so I might get a few grey leans to keep me going.

I'd also been keeping away as we were in the process of adopting a new girl for whipptey boy to play with and I didn't want to jinx it by posting about her, if only I'd known [rueful smile emoticon] we have had to say we can't have her now as we are back and forward to the hospital all the time. DH and I have chatted today and when all this is settled we will rehome another little girl and if possible call her Grace (the name of the one we can't home) as it seems such an apt name for a pointy girl.

Anyway, glad you all agree about the lack of grumpy whippets, some of the people on that thread are just ignorant Wink

Hope family time perks up for you CMOT.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 13/03/2013 21:07

Oh no :( how awful, sending best wishes and pointy love your way MrS, hoping for the best xx

Having spent a lot of time sat around in ICU and CCU waiting rooms recently I can definitely say they are bloody awful places. Especially where David is now, the ICU waiting room doesn't have any windows so sitting there for 6 hours can feel like half an hour, you feel a bit jetlagged when you eventually get outside!

Grace is definitely a good name for a pointy, my friend has a Greyhound named Grace and it really suits her, she also has a Whippet :o named Pippin, really suits her too, she's such a cheeky little character :)

MrSlant · 13/03/2013 21:13

Ah the fun and games family lead us through cunny, I didn't realise your brother was still in ICU, sorry, it's so hard. And why does it need to be so HOT? I understand on the ward where all the patients are undressed but the waiting room is hotter I swear, it's like some form of purgatory Wink. I've been thinking about you loads, especially when you were so brave and had sprocket go into 'foster' care for a while, it's the best decision for the dog but hard on you!

Pippin is a great name too, my friend has a tiny little dog called pip and she's ace.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 13/03/2013 22:40

Well, he actually went home yesterday! He came off the ventilator last Monday and left ICU Tuesday, on wednesday he had an eating test, thursday he ate his first meal since the end of december, a massive plate of mash, broccoli and gravy, then yesterday at noon my mum collected him from hospital, took him to McDonalds for a treat and he was fine all afternoon and evening but late last night he started throwing up a lot, ended up back at hospital, in ICU , sedated and back on the ventilator with a chest infection, turns out some sick got in his lungs. His freedom was very short lived!

Tbh I'm so relieved that I sent Sprocket away when I did, 2 days after he'd gone David nearly died and ended up going to Manchester (2 hours away) for this magical treatment called ECMO which saved his life (literally, we were called into hospital at 3am to be told he had less than 24 hours left). So we were back and forth to Manchester a lot. Sprocket was in the best place really, I didn't see DD for nearly a week!

The great thing about Sprockets fosterers is they really fell in love with him and have said that when we go on holiday they'll have him, also if we can no longer keep him for whatever reason they'll have him. They've even made it clear to the rescue that if I go to them and ask them to find him a new home he'll go straight to them without being 'advertised'! He has his own set of Grundparents now :o

MrSlant · 14/03/2013 16:27

Oh cunny what a roller coaster week! Maybe next time he comes out get him to start back on food a bit more slowly Wink I'm so excited that he has been out though, that must be such a relief. Don't know where we are really, bil's got probably catastrophic levels of brain damage but he is breathing so we just have to sit and wait and see what happens, I am NOT good at uncertainty at the best of times so this is scary and frustrating. Going to take my extra sharp big sisters poking stick this weekend because obviously insulting him hasn't done the trick yet.

Had a fabulous run on the beach with my boy and his much younger girlfriend today. I really think everyone in this village will have a whippet soon. She is 5 months old and so perfect and black and shiny, she's just got the hang of super fast running and I could watch her all day. There is such pure joy to be had watching pointy hounds let their legs stretch out and run because they can and they want to, thank goodness for dogs!

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 14/03/2013 19:06

Oh MrS, how awful for you all, the not knowing is the worst bit isn't it? If you ever want to chat I have my phone with me all the time so all you need to do is send a quick pm and I'll get back to you straight away. It really helped me to talk about it and Scuttle was a fantastic support for me. I know what you mean RE the insults and pointy stick, we all sat at Davids bedside promising him all sorts if he promised to come back to us, he got promised a car and free pints for life (one of his brothers owns a pub) :o

MrSlant · 14/03/2013 20:45

Your family are obviously too nice! The first time we got to see him after his injury DH and I took the piss out of his hair and the nurse laughed and said every single person in so far had been rude to him. His other brother was telling him how fat he looked Grin. He's always been spoilt being the youngest so that's going to stop!

I don't know what other dogs are like as I've only had my gorgeous boy but he is the best comfort dog in the world. If I'm having a sad moment he pretty much comes and sits across my chest like he's giving me a big hug, he got a new collar today so I might have to have a quick look in Milgi Coats for something fetching to go with it...

mistlethrush · 14/03/2013 21:08

Its funny, mistlehound isn't much of a lapdog, although she's a cuddle up beside you dog quite happily.

However, based on what we feel we've discovered about her since she joined us, its pretty amazing that she wants to snuggle up - I really don't think that she was an 'indoor' dog - and I don't think she really had that much to do with people, apart from getting kicked - quite how she's so keen to please I don't know.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 14/03/2013 21:49

Oh we did our fair share of pisstaking too :o he's always been super skinny but something caused him to swell up and his face and neck were HUGE! I also threatened to take in some wax and wax patterns into his leg hair :o my mum told him she'd never seen his finger nails so clean.

Mistle that's so sad and lovely at the same time about mistlehound, she's been mistreated in the past but is still willing to put her love and trust in humans despite the previous unkindness she has been given. Dogs are wonderful creatures really aren't they?

On another, completely unrelated topic to anything. I saw a thread in chat earlier about animal belly buttons! Can anyone else see their dogs belly button? I've found Sprockets, looks nothing like a belly button though. More like a cigarette burn on his belly near his willy.

mistlethrush · 14/03/2013 21:55

mistlehound and mistledog both had/have belly hair swirls over the top of their belly buttons.

She's now managed to get past her aversion to feet to wedge in along my leg (out on the sofa) and is dreaming happily

MrSlant · 14/03/2013 22:16

He's more an alongside the lap rather than lap dog too apart from when I look very sad when he desperately tries to be a lap dog but he's rather large!

Lovely mistlehound, I cannot for the life of me understand the mindset that treats a dog (or any other animal) poorly. How lovely she has you and your alarming feet to love now Wink

poorpaws · 14/03/2013 23:04

Knocks on door tentatively. Please can I come in? I've got a lovely lurcher and a little spaniel. I've had many, many spaniels but my big black lurcher girl is my very first hound and has become the love of my life. Ive had a look on here before and thought I would revisit and was just about to leave when I thought I'd knock on the door and see if you invite me in.

MrSlant · 14/03/2013 23:45

They do get to you, welcome to the cushion Grin

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 15/03/2013 08:16

Welcome Paws :) you are most welcome! There is always room on the cushion floor for us humans to sit down Wink

mistlethrush · 15/03/2013 09:29

For anyone that's slightly north east midlands/ yorkshire / north east ish, there's a race day for lurchers on April 13th nearish Doncaster for lurchers / whippets / usually a terrier race - and there even appears to be a childrens race this time (I wonder if they'll put a chocolate egg on the lure???). pm me if you want details - I've been to the normal race afternoons with them and its good fun and not taken too seriously etc!

Mistlehound will settle down with a foot near her - sort of accidentally - then at some stage she'll realise that she's near a foot (or a foot has been gently massaging her) and she'll jump up and look very uncomfortable - she has even growled (very unusual for our very quiet dog). She doesn't have the same aversion to hands, ever - so that the only conclusion we can come to is that she was kicked.

We also think that her amazing vertical jumping capabilities (she is like having zebedee on a lead if she wants to see what's going on over a barrier) is because she was in a shed or barn with a high window so got the practise jumping up to look out.

Scuttlebutter · 15/03/2013 14:36

Hello all and a very warm welcome to Poorpaws. Smile

A busy weekend ahead. Got a CARIAD meeting tomorrow down in deepest Cardiganshire, and then on Sunday we are taking Norty Minx to a recall workshop with our trainer. She has improved enormously since we have been going to classes, but is still prone to doing that thing of wandering off in search of squirrels, hearing when you call her, but only deciding to come back when she is ready. On the plus side, when she does come back, she goes at Warp Factor Batshit, and bounces up looking delighted to see us.

What's everyone else got planned?

Mistle, lurcher racing sounds fab - wish we were nearer!

Scuttlebutter · 15/03/2013 14:37

And in other news, it's confirmed that we'll be taking the Tent of Destiny to the 1000 Greyhounds Event in Exeter on September 8th. Really looking forward to it.

mistlethrush · 15/03/2013 15:09

Tent of destiny sounds ominous. And the thought of camping with DS sharing the tent is a nightmare - so luckily we are too far away to join you I'm afraid Scuttle! Mind you, I think mistlehound would be quite a good warming dog to snuggle up to. Although she dreams a lot so I think it would be quite disturbing too.

The question is (I believe, based upon some photos I've seen of lurchers camping), what style of PJs have you got for your hound? I saw a wonderful tiger striped pair on a picture from last October - he looked very snug!

I think there's something on in Derbyshire on the 25th too.
