Sprocket has 2 beds, downstairs is just a folded up double duvet inside an empty 'nest' bed (the cushion for the bed was shite so I got rid of it) and upstairs he has a memory foam bed (bargain off ebay!) with a folded up double duvet on top.

I think it's better for them to have a bed of their own. If they just had the sofa they could get protective over it and you'd be stuck on the floor! At least if they have their own bed it's somewhere for them to go where no-one else goes. If you think about it, if houndy saw the sofa as their bed, they won't want people sitting all over it. You wouldn't want people sitting all over your bed would you?

Ddog has a bed in his crate, and then a mat on the floor (mostly only used for eating pigs ears or bones on), plus sleeping on the sofa. Right now, he is pretending to be small by curling up on the other sofa. This will not last, and soon will be occupying most of it.

Mistlehound has a fleece pocket with a double duvet inside, folded in 4 (cover from the LL shop). She has a memory foam mattress in the hall which she studiously ignores (was previous dog's). She has a plastic basket with a 1/4 double duvet inside it in the kitchen. She has a further double duvet (normally in 1/4s, but she rearranges it) in our bedroom where she sleeps at night (we will, gradually, aim to move her out, but it was such a big change for her coming into the house having been in a barn with lots of dogs that being on her own away from us was definitely a step too far). And we have coverings on the sofa so that she can join me there too. Spoilt? Never

I know some pointies like the raised ones with the fabric sling - that you can put things like vet mat on... The duvet situation was self-chosen... I was going to cut it up into 1/4s and perhaps stack two up - but she sat on it before I could sort that out!!!

Sprocket would need a large or XL, so nearly £200 I might just persuade DP to make one with a few bits of wood, some foam, material etc. lots cheaper than 200 quid!

Pet bed for life! I think they should send me one to test, whippety now lives on duvets and fleeces after he destroyed everything we could throw at him .

We had a lovely visitor yesterday, a 4 month old whippet puppy. She is absolutely beautiful and had our boy wrapped around her paw in minutes. After she left whippety was so sad all day that DH has agreed that another dog is indeed a possibility. He is adamant that we can only have another whippet though so I have fired of applications to every sighthound/whippet rescue I can find online (strike whilst the irons hot and all that ) If anyone hears of a whippet needing a home, you know who to call! Where's scuttle at the moment? I really think my boy would like a smaller girl as he is a gentle soul and is always deffers to other boy dogs, will I be marked down for expressing a preferrence?

Hello I'm back! Got back from weekend of debauchery and pleasure in London - Wales now seems very wet. Good to be reunited with hounds though.

This is exciting news, Lost. I will see what I can do. I'm guessing you've put your name down for Scruples obviously? And how would you feel about a whippy lurcher? Adult or pup? No problem in expressing a preference - v sensible when there is another dog already in situ.

DH is adamant that we can only have another 'one like that', pointing at whippety, I'm not sure he realises that there cannot possibly be another dog so gorgeous and soft and well behaved and my baby . So only a very very whippety looking lurcher I suppose! Would prefer a younger dog whilst the boys are young, would feel safer with a dog we had 'moulded' living with a mad 6 year old! I think we are in for a bit of a wait to get the right dog for us but tbh if we are going on holiday for 2 weeks in July it's better to wait until after that anyway.

Glad you had a fabulous weekend. Wales is indeed very, very, very wet!

Actually that's all very useful to know. I am doing a homecheck for Sid tomorrow night (look on the EGLR website) who in many ways would have suited you perfectly, but EGLR often have whippetty girls in. In fact, if you look at their FB page, I defy anyone not to fall in love with the adorable Fairy - a v young tripod whippy girl. Personally I am yearning after Maggie but a - we already have four dogs and b - she is long haired so would trigger DH's asthma. Rachel, who's the foster co-ordinator suggested meeting up for a pub lunch shortly so I could spend some time with her but I feel this is potentially fraught with danger -strong likelihood she would be smuggled home......

Ooh, v excited that Sid is getting a homecheck, he is gorgeous. My lurcher boy is probably mostly whippy (and is an EGLR graduate), and is lovely. And not put off by mad 6 year olds either.

Sid is beautiful I hope the home is suitable for him. Actually they are all pretty gorgeous, Fairy will get a wonderful home I'm sure. Maggie would do so well at your house Scuttle, surely 4 to 5 isn't a big leap? (Sorry Scuttle's DH ). Anyway, mustn't get carried away, plenty of time to find a suitable new baby for our family. There is a fabulous 'scruffy' haired ginger lurcher pup on one of the sites but I don't think I could pass it off as a whippet as he's already 15" at about 5 months old!

Try Evesham GLR - they have a few youngsters in at the moment who aren't on the website yet, and several of their foster homes have cats. When we went to see ours, they had 7 cats !

I saw the perfect bedlington cross scruffy lurcher - which would have been the perfect addition with mistlehound - just big enough to curl up between her legs... but DH told me I wasn't allowed one 'whilst we both work'.... guess what I'm thinking about now!!!

He does have a point, Whippety boy is not overly keen on other dogs, especially the in-your-face-variety, so perhaps another dog would be foolish...

Well, dog training class was fun tonight. Tutor asked us all to bring a box (101 things to do with a box type thing). Excellent, I thought. Something fun, something different. By the end of the class, every other dog in the class was merrily clambering in and out of the box, sitting in the box, jumping eagerly and generally interacting like mad. Norty Minx took one tiny sniff of the box, promptly lay down and went to sleep. Even when I filled the box with treats - she just decided to catch up on her rest. And of course she has had such a tiring day - 40 minute walk this morning, followed by a great deal of preparatory snoozing this afternoon.

Sigh. Oh well. Maybe next week.

Ah, Norty minx has an interesting idea of classes!

I took our collie / terrier (then puppy) to dog training. There was one session where we had to do a 'long down' (all of 5 mins). All the other dogs obediently settled down and had a doze. Mine started off at one end of the hall and squirmed her way (in a down, so that she wasn't 'really' misbehaving) to the other side of the hall - with quite a bit of vocal accompaniement too!

I think whippety would have won awards for his 'down' today. He took one look at the weather and hasn't moved since . I think if I am ever reincarnated I would like to come back as him!
