Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

So far so good - she slunk out of the sitting room when I got back, She hadn't heard the car pull in the drive, so obviously wasn't really listening out for me returning. Two of my walking shoes were in the sitting room - clearly her security blanket! (they weren't chewed) Grin

Hi MrSlant the Dispatches programme will be about the issue of the import of pups from Central/Eastern European countries - something which I've talked about previously on here as it has the potential to make the awful welfare in Welsh puppy farms look minor by comparison. As well as the welfare issue there is also the problem of disease control - it is not clear that anti rabies protocols are working as they should. I know a couple of the people who were involved with the making of. Sadly it is yet another reason not to buy a cheap puppy, but while we have numpties like the lady on the other post and others who just want cheap/easy/fast dogs, then there will be this problem. Sad

Hi all. I've been off MN for a while but could use a pointy hug.

Billy was attacked this morning by another dog and could barely walk home. He has a big chunk out of his right shoulder from which he's bleeding and isn't really using his right front leg much. Dog came bounding over the marshes and just went for him. The other owner has done the right thing and stayed in touch on the phone with us throughout.

Billy's at the vet, being investigated, stitched up and God knows what else. I'm so shaken and sad for him. I keep on crying. Sad Sad Sad

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 09/03/2013 12:45

Oh bloody hell Betsey, I'm not surprised you're so shaken up. Poor Billy :( at least the other owner cares and is keeping in touch though which is one good thing. Let us know how he's doing.

MagratGarlik · 09/03/2013 12:48

Crikey, Betsey, no wonder you are shaken. I hope Billy is alright.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 09/03/2013 14:54

Still no news from the vet. She said she'd call when he was out of anaesthetic. We just went to the supermarket and I started crying in the car on the way home. I just feel really shaky and ill and horrible. My poor boy. I can't stop crying.

I should have taken his lead off so he could have run away but I just didn't think, it all happened so fast. So lucky the boys weren't with me, they'd have been traumatised.

BIG treats when he gets home.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 09/03/2013 15:27

It's so easy to forget these things Betsey, you'll drive yourself insane with should haves and what ifs. I hope you hear from the vet soon.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 09/03/2013 18:47

It's shit. (Sorry to swear).

Poor Bill's had internal and external stitching. He has massive bruising that they uncovered when they shaved him for the op. The vet's worried he'll need a skin graft. The first lot of bills come to £470. I want the other owner to pay every sodding penny because then he might take a little more care with his dog around others. He says we should claim on insurance and he'll pay excess.

We might not be able to pick him up tonight. Sad

BehindLockNumberNine · 09/03/2013 19:00

Oh shit Betsey, have just seen this. Sending you and your lovely boys a huge hug. And Sam sends a shy pat to Billy x

Will read rest of thread now as am months behind Sad

BehindLockNumberNine · 09/03/2013 19:02

Tell other owner to pay up and then claim on HIS insurance. Tell him there is no way your insurance premiums should go up because he cannot control his dog.
Tell him you are also considering reporting his dog as it is clearly dangerous and he could not control it.

I would be fuming with him!

MagratGarlik · 09/03/2013 19:04

But why should you claim on your insurance and then have to pay higher premiums in future? The other dog's owner sounds like a twat (sorry).

None of it is your fault, Betsey. If you would have let Billy off, he may have run and you could have lost him. The other owner should have his dog under control.

sooperdooper · 09/03/2013 19:12

Oh Betsy how awful :( Yes, agree the other owner should just pay up, forget putting it on insurance, he should've had his dog under control, hope you get Billy home soon x

MissBetseyTrotwood · 09/03/2013 19:29

The vet said that if a dog is injured like that, there's a 8 hour long 'golden window' where they can give the best treatment. He said keeping him on the lead was the right thing to do so he could be treated asap. Just about to call to find out if we can fetch our boy home tonight.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 10/03/2013 08:51

Got him home last night, DH forgot the meds so has to go back this morning. He's very sad and sore. Huge patch shaved off his right shoulder revealing puncture wounds, lots of bruising and the stitched up chunk about 3 inches long. He's eaten and drunk and pooed and weed and inspected the garden though so must be progress.

We're putting the lounge fire on for him this afternoon (once in a blue moon event) and are going to the market to the butcher stall to get some nice bits for him.

Will take photos of wounds today and get insurance details off other owner (hopefully).

Wound's going to start itching soon - Cunny remind me what you did to stop Sprocket scratching? We're thinking several layers of snug fitting DC's socks over the back paws.

He's so withdrawn and miserable. I got up 3 times to him in the night as he was crying. Luckily he settled with a bit of stroking and belly scratching. And singing, OMG I'm a freak Blush

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 10/03/2013 09:44

Baby socks and a muzzle. The type with non slip soles, you might be able to get some cheap ones from Primark or something. DD has some, got hers from Next, think they were around a fiver for 5 pairs! Or a couple of these, although the reviews say they're velcro straps and not laces.

I'm pleased he's home now, bless him. Glad he's eating and drinking etc too, sounds like he's feeling okay.

Scuttlebutter · 10/03/2013 10:21

Betsey, have only just seen this (ILs staying for weekend so not on computer much). Sad AngryJust wanted to give you a really quick message - sending you all lots of love and very gentle hugs. Would strongly advise contacting Dog Warden and police, and would also suggest a quick phone call to DogLaw (Trevor Cooper) to ensure all bases covered. What you don't want is this guy putting in claim/statement saying that your dog started things. Do you have any witnesses? Will be in touch again shortly. (And on Mother's Day too!!)

MissBetseyTrotwood · 10/03/2013 11:33

Just took him for a walk and he was very very nervous - pulled the whole way round and when we bumped into people we know, people he's been fine with before (no dogs) he was terrified and really flinched.

Thanks guys - I'll go to Primark in my lunch break tomorrow and see what I can find. And thanks for that advice Scuttle - no witnesses. We do have an email from him now though, apologising profusely and hoping we can 'work things out with insurance'. Not sure what he means by that. If the apology's not an admission of guilt, we don't really have much else to go on. Billy wasn't muzzled but I had it with me; he's been so good recently and really calm at meeting other dogs.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 10/03/2013 11:48

If you can't find any Betsey and you don't want to spend a fortune let me know and I'll send you DDs, they just fall off her feet for some reason Confused no matter how small I buy them.

MagratGarlik · 10/03/2013 15:45

Hi all - just trying to figure out if I have managed to properly unhide this thread. I hid it yesterday by accident and still can't see it properly in the threads list...

MissBetseyTrotwood · 10/03/2013 17:05

Aww, thanks Cunny - We'll figure it out somehow. We've probably got a builder starting the garden soon who loves dogs and has staffies so he's been making friends with Billy and has said he'll pop in on him during the day to check he's OK.

You're OUT of the closet now Magrat . Hello. Smile

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 10/03/2013 17:18

:o at 'out of the closet' :o

I think you've unhidden the thread Magrat, you wouldn't be able to see it at all if you hadn't.

Well if you want them Betsey just let me know. They are pink but I'm sure Billy wouldn't mind :o

Scuttlebutter · 10/03/2013 18:45

Hope you are having a better afternoon, and sending the darling boy lots of gentle cuddles.

I'd think seriously about seeking the advice of a good behaviourist because of the impact (understandable) on his behaviour and it's really important that's documented and that the other owner meets those additional costs as well. As well, a good behaviourist can probably advise on steps to start rebuilding his confidence before nervous behaviours become too ingrained. Again, I suspect a call to Trevor would help to understand how this would all fit together. He has made so much progress with you, and I'm so sorry that all those months of work have now been pushed back.

And I LOVE the idea of him wearing Cunny's DD's socks. Grin

Also wanted to say that our four hounds send lots of healing hound love xxx

And feel free to call for a chat anytime. x Smile You must be so worried xx

MissBetseyTrotwood · 10/03/2013 19:57

I think we'll have to now. We visited a friend over half term who has two rescue staffs who she's had a few dog on dog issues with, some started by them and some not. She had a behaviourist in who helped no end. I'll put a call in to the kennels this week and see if they can recommend anyone in particular. Billy was fine with them out doors in their garden but not so happy once in the house - they liked him though!

I'm going to call the insurance from work tomorrow morning and discuss the situation with them. Thought I'd wait until Monday as the weekends you don't always get the proper people around. I want to report it to the dog warden but I've no taste for going to court or anything. I couldn't face the stress of it all, I really couldn't.

He's been getting progressively better as the day's worn on and spent the afternoon on the sofa with the DSs watching Star Wars. He's a bit too interested in the Ewoks. He even stole a piece of lemon cake off the kitchen table when my back was turned so things must be getting back to normal.

Billy's man enough to wear pink Cunny ! Back to the vets with DH tomorrow morning.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 10/03/2013 19:57

And thanks for the hound love Scuttle - when Billy untucks his nose from under his front leg I'll pass it on!

mistlethrush · 10/03/2013 22:26

Betsy - I don't know whereabouts in the country you are but there's a lurcher - savy behaviourist in the north midlands who might be suitable - apparently he has some great dogs who really help dogs coming with problems - and who can blame yours for having a few hang-ups now! I hope that he's feeling a lot better soon. I don't know whether a Tshirt might be suitable?
