Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

Ooh Scuttle I recognised a collar fabric on that LL link, blue stars! The same fabric that you do for walking out coats and bandanas :)

I love the Morocco design collar on the LL website.

Ours have collars from collarsrus and a variety of styles from silver peacock. Our lurcher girl usually ends up with her leather GRWE collar as her head seems to be of a shape which is incompatible with martingales (it's flat and she can slip out).

The hounds have better wardrobes than I do.

Oh my goodness, I'm in love! Huey is exactly the type of pup that I'd love, although I really want a young pup, rather than a youngster on this occasion. I have a soft spot for both terriers and pointies, so a whirrier is right up my street and the scruffier the better.

I really have to stop looking at rescue sites until we're ready to adopt. Blush

They are both beautiful. We almost adopted a young whirrier instead of our lurcher, but we were uneasy with the lack of assessment the rescue had done on her (she'd been on minimal handling due to mange when we reserved her) - though she was a very young dog and would have probably played more with whippy. We therefore decided that as we weren't 100% sure, we would back out and she was taken by someone else the same day, I believe.

Oh, Moose, those little furry faces... Utterly gorgeous. Dribble, dribble. I completely agree that the scruffier the better. Grin You just know you are going to be having years of fun and mayhem with those two terrierists.

Luey looks like a scaled down version of lurcherboy, but blimey, that Huey's little face can melt hearts.

Scuttle, that's exactly it, terrierist fun, frolicks and mayhem - can't wait! Grin

I have to say, I liked Luey better... you adopt one and we'll have the other.

Huey is gorgeous!!

Haven't had chance to look at collars but I've never really been into them. Perhaps it's a new interest I can gain Grin

Cinnamon.. I'd never been 'in' to collars until we got mistlehound - but her neck looked so long and seeing her scratch at her immovable leather collar made me think that she would be more comfortable in a fabric collar.... Then of course you need to get the best width - then you need to get one that suits their colour (blacks are easy - they look great in strong colours and some of the pastels, but tan dogs are more difficult)... then you need a spare one so that the first can go in the washing machine to get whatever was rolled in out of it... Hmm. I might go as far as getting a posh disk as there's so much more neck for it to be visible on... but we won't be going as far as getting tassles! I don't think that they would be right on a scruffy!!!

I'm rather taken by [[http://www.lurcherlink.org/llink/forum/viewtopic.php?t=87864 Ellie] and hope someone adopts her soon so that I can stop being tempted! DH says no to another dog - probably sensible as there is a bit of a chance we'll end up with a small border terrier at some stage as his aunt can't really cope with 2 dogs.

Someone bought their terrierist with their lurcher to the racing on Sunday - and put the pair in for a race together (just 100m) - she had to wait until the lurcher had been slipped before letting the terrier go!

Mistle - I fell for Ellie the first time I saw the thread too. Especially when they said how naughty she is. Grin

I simply have to have a scruffy whirrier and I really want a pup this time - next time, when the dcs are older I will take on someone older that has some problems to sort, but for now I want to be able to do all the training and socialisation my way from the getgo, iykwim.

Probably, when the time comes, I'll fall for an older dog and all plans will go out the window, but for now, I feel a strong sense of knowing what we need as a family (including lurcherboy) and I feel like I should stick to it.

Thanks for the heads up - it wasn't showing up as new posts on my screen for some reason. Have replied now.

Things are going really well. Still no noise and lurcherboy is much more relaxed - finally choosing to sleep in the kitchen instead of sticking to me like glue and loving his kongs. Doesn't even bother to get up when I come home now - whereas before he was always right behind the kitchen door.

Just had a visit from my Aunt who has two Parsons Jack Russells - really reminded me why I like terrier personalities so much. Her two are hilarious. Grin

I realised that when I tried to post a response and it asked for my log in details. Blush I thought I was set to stay logged in, but it must have timed me out at some point.

I know, I'm so glad they've been taken in, not least of all for their poor owner. He/she must have been beside themselves with worry.

They look very sweet don't they, but am still much more drawn to scruffies like Ellie and Huey.

Just been watching the Paul O'Grady Battersea programme with Twinkle the lurcher pup on. Poor little mite.

How on earth did they rehome to France without a home check though? Or don't Battersea homecheck? Confused

Report
MagratGarlik · 11/06/2013 21:40

I don't know about home checks, but I know they are apparently a pound even though they do behavioural assessment. So maybe they don't?????

Report
moosemama · 11/06/2013 21:54

I don't live in the area, so don't know, but assumed, being so high profile, that they would be pretty stringent when checking out potential new homes.

... just checked their site and apparently the do homechecks, but will accept vet or local rescue references and/or arrange for a more local rescue to homecheck for them.

Report
mistlethrush · 11/06/2013 22:41

I had a vet's recommendation (which was high praise ifimss) but still had to have a home check - when I've seen the form its actually quite long and covers a lot of information - although its possible to talk through most of it rather than fill in info at the time.

However, I had already sent the rescue (actually, several) a detailed essay bit of information on what we could offer and what we were looking for - which I think probably showed we were being realistic, and also knew what we were talking about.

I'm looking forward to seeing a friend's professional photos from a shoot over in northumberland - I spotted another hound I knew on a poster on the seafront at seahouses - and confirmed this with their owner and saw their photos - and talked with someone else going in that direction and they had already decided to get a photoshoot (outdoor) with the same person....

Did you have to pay to get a vet reference? Can't imagine ours doing it for nothing - they never do anything for free. Hmm

Report
MagratGarlik · 11/06/2013 23:17

We had to have a vet reference for our lurched. They did it for free (along with comments of oooh, we like Dog's Trust - we give money to them and oooh, we like lurchers too). But then, ours are very good at being understanding at the fact I never get my insurance claims sorted out quickly for them Blush

Ours did ours for nothing - but then we'd just paid an arm and a leg for mistledog's last 3 weeks Sad

Mistlehound is definitely a 'night is for sleeping' dog, although she can unravel a bit to present a tummy to be tickled sometimes. Mistledog wasn't quite as bad - the two collie crosses couldn't have been more different - one was ASLEEP between about 10pm and 7.30am and most miffed to be disturbed during that time, whereas the other would be wide awake whatever time she saw you (and if she shared a room with you she would come and tell you how wonderful it was and exciting to be on holiday and sharing a room with you, with major tail banging against the bed, several times during the night). It was the latter that used to be poised, waiting for the postman 6 days a week but not on Sundays.
