Asked for my dog to be stud dog

cedar12 · 03/11/2011 10:08

Met a lady yesterday she really wants her dog to have one lot of puppies. She asked if my dog would be a stud. They are both Westies. We have planned to meet up in the park next week and let them get on with it! Not sure what usually happens about payment etc. Do we wait until her dog is pregnant then get paid or wait until the puppies are born? also how much is the norm? Also it ok to just meet in the park! Not sure what is the done thing. Thanks

is this a joke thread?

daisydotandgertie · 03/11/2011 10:27

It has to be.

No-one surely can be that ignorant?

DogsBestFriend · 03/11/2011 10:36

Sadly, there are plenty of people who are that ignorant about, daisy.

I'll give the OP the benefit of the doubt though and assume it's a joke... not that there's anything remotely funny about cruel and potentially life threatening back yard breeding.

Probably not a joke. I've got a friend who asked me if she should let her sweet but untested dog be used at stud. I gave her all the reasons why she shouldn't - nicely! - and she still went ahead. More than one litter of 'Rover's babies' have now appeared on Facebook.

OP, please say no. Dog breeding isn't just a case of letting two dogs get it on in a park. Responsible breeders health-check their dogs, show them regularly to establish they have solid conformation for the breed, choose a stud with care to balance any faults or strengths in the bloodline, set aside substantial amounts of cash for emergency vet bills, wait until they have a confirmed list of buyers and only then arrange a mating. They also keep/take back any unsold puppies - and as the stud dog owner, you should be as prepared to do this as the bitch's owner. Do you think someone who'd approach a stranger in a park to sire a litter is going to be scrupulous about what sort of homes those puppies go to?

No bitch 'needs' to have one litter. No dog 'needs' to have one go at siring puppies.

GrimmaTheNome · 03/11/2011 10:59

The 'done thing' is to say no and explain that there are more than enough dogs available from rescues or from proper breeders, that she's being really irresponsible if she goes ahead and has a litter.

I've no idea if westies suffer from genetic defects which need to be screened for before breeding - does this lady? Do you?

cedmonds · 03/11/2011 11:03

Please dont do it. For one the bitch and dog have had none of the revalvant testing done.
It is bring more dogs into the world just because the dogs are loveley or to make money or whatever reasons.
Also the dogs want just do it is she season etc.
Breeding is very hard work and can be life threating to the bitch if people do not know what they are doing, and belive me the dont know what they are doing as they would not say lets meet in the park etc.

cedar12 · 03/11/2011 11:05

I dont know any thing about it which was why I was asking before going ahead. Not everyone is an expert on breeding dog. Which is why a have been trying to research it. Sorry.

cedar12
Please don't do it. It is wrong.

You have done no research. Bitch's owner has done none. None of you tested your dogs, she does not sound like a person who will ensure the puppies to go into the appropriate homes, if they survive that long. I am not even mentioning the vet fees should something go wrong, which could be astronomical. Will she pay up or will she just let them die/suffer?

There is every chance you will be bringing puppies to the world that can be inherit a serious condition and/or become homeless at some stage in their life. There is no money that can justify such misery...

GrimmaTheNome · 03/11/2011 11:18

cedar, its OK - its a good thing you asked hereSmile

OK, how about someone who really knows their stuff (and how to put it nicely! Grin provides Cedar with exactly what she should say to the silly bitch-owner when they next meet, to dissuade her?

DogsBestFriend · 03/11/2011 11:23

Cedar, I'm knackered with repeating this but luckily someone else has written it all far better than I do. Please see here under "Responsible Breeders" as to why you should not be allowing your dog to be a stud to ANY bitch, not least this bloody awful woman's one.

Then please see for why no-one in your situation should breed dogs at all. This link relates to Ireland but the only difference to the UK is that our dogs get an extra 2 days.

HeresTheThingBooyhoo · 03/11/2011 11:24

no, not everyone is an expert on breeding dogs, neither are you so dont do it.

you have no clue of the health of the other dog. you have no owners lined up for the pups, you would be a backyard breeder. and a pretty clueless one at that, the worst kind.

say no. tehre are enough poor dogs in the world. why on earth would you even entertain this idea? is money that important that you would risk the lives of so many animals?

DogsBestFriend · 03/11/2011 11:26

I know my stuff and I can tell Cedar what to say to the silly bitch owner....

... but I can't put it nicely.

I suggest that cedar gives the woman a photo of dead dogs in a dog pound freezer.

feesh · 03/11/2011 11:40

This is really sad, there are already more dogs in the UK than there are potential happy homes. Don't do it, and hopefully the potential owners of those puppies will seek out some rescued pups to give a loving home to instead.

Any reason why your dog isn't castrated?

GrimmaTheNome · 03/11/2011 11:46

I suggest that cedar gives the woman a photo of dead dogs in a dog pound freezer.

But she would be unlikely to accept that would happen to her fwuffy westies. Or that she'd be contributing to that sort of problem. The 'responsible breeders' link is much more likely to achieve the desired effect.

DogsBestFriend · 03/11/2011 12:31

True, Grimma, they never do, do they?

I'd go for the direct approach - a bop on the nose, leave her on the floor, scoop up the Westie, get her spayed and then find her a decent, responsible owner... but I suspect that this might get me into trouble. :o

Rhinestone · 03/11/2011 12:46

Sorry OP but you've got off far too lightly.

I'm absolutely fucking staggered that you would even consider this. What kind of dog owner are you? I'm glad that you asked whether this was ok as it's given a lot of people the chance to tell you that it's not, but quite frankly you should be embarrassed / ashamed that you had to ask.

bemybebe · 03/11/2011 12:52

"I'm glad that you asked whether this was ok..."

Rhine if you read the OP the question was not whether "this was ok" but how to go about doing it.

I am not sure what I can possibly do to drum up the message that it is WRONG WRONG WRONG, apart from say that it is.

cedar12 · 03/11/2011 12:53

Again, Sorry for asking. I alway thought better to ask. Now I am a lot better informed and will take the advise given. But I dont think I was wrong to ask. Obviously I was very ill informed on the subject, but people only learn by asking questions.

OP posts:
Rhinestone · 03/11/2011 12:57

bemybebe ok thanks for the nitpicking, not sure what your point is as I was a lot harsher telling the OP not to do this than most people on this thread.

OP, ideally you would learn about these issues BEFORE becoming a dog owner.

josephinebonaparte · 03/11/2011 12:58

Wow, you lot are scary ladies.

bemybebe · 03/11/2011 13:01

"no point" rhine just nitpicking as you very accurately pointed out Wink
cedar good luck with your doggie and if someone asks you next time the right answer is at the very least to say "absolutely and categorically no! Angry"

Smile

cedar12 · 03/11/2011 13:02

I have never planned to breed so have never thought about it before. Only got asked yesterday havent said I would do it. All her sugestion said I would look into it and let her know if I wanted to meet her next week.

OP posts:
GrimmaTheNome · 03/11/2011 13:02

Whoa there. You don't combat ignorance by beating people up when they ask a question. Especially not when they then are happy to take your advice.
She knows now and hopefully will educated anyone else who solicits her dog!
