Asked for my dog to be stud dog

cedar12 · 03/11/2011 10:08

Met a lady yesterday she really wants her dog to have one lot of puppies. She asked if my dog would be a stud. They are both Westies. We have planned to meet up in the park next week and let them get on with it! Not sure what usually happens about payment etc. Do we wait until her dog is pregnant then get paid or wait until the puppies are born? also how much is the norm? Also it ok to just meet in the park! Not sure what is the done thing. Thanks

cecar what have you decided to do?

HeresTheThingBooyhoo · 03/11/2011 13:03

cedar

pinkytheshrunkenhead · 03/11/2011 13:03

I don't think this sort of thing is that uncommon, I have been approached three times (twice by parents at our school) to ask I am going to breed my little dog - one has offered her dog as a stud too!

I think Op you were right to come and ask here - dog people here should stop be so dismissive when people come and ask or advice, you don't have to agree with it but taking the piss does not help.

misdee · 03/11/2011 13:06

sorry for asking if it was a joke. after yesterdays staffy thread, i wasnt sure.

i would tell her no.

and get my dog done asap.

Rhinestone · 03/11/2011 13:09

I make no apology whatsoever for being astounded that someone who actually has a dog themselves, and therefore presumably considers themselves a 'dog lover', doesn't know about these issues. And the OP SHOULD be embarrassed but I'm obviously pleased she's taken the advice offered.

And I wasn't taking the piss, I was being completely serious.

bemybebe - sorry, I was possibly being a tad sensitive! Grin

PetiteRaleuse · 03/11/2011 13:13

I have been approached by people who want to breed from my goldie. Not just other goldie owners but people with other dogs who just want puppies with their GSD, lab, doberman, among other breeds.

I have always said no.

This attitude is frighteningly common though. I am currently trying to educate my neighbours against having a litter of puppies from the pug bitch she bought and learned later that had been imported to France from Eastern Europe.

Cedar I hope you come to the right decision and do not allow this to go ahead.

cedar12 · 03/11/2011 13:15

As I said before I said I will take take the advise. I could understand everyone continuing to get annoyed if wasnt taking the advise!

OP posts:
HeresTheThingBooyhoo · 03/11/2011 13:23

it's an emotive topic. that's why people get annoyed. animals have no way of preventing pups, it's up to their owners to be responsible and not let it happen. it's actually shocking how little people care about their animals that they would consider doing this with a random stranger who just happened to see them in the park. you wouldn't pick a partner for your son or daughter like that, why would you do it to your dog?? dogs aren't an accessory to provide cuteness in your life. you are their owner to provide, food, shelter, healthcare and stability in theirs!!

cedar12 · 03/11/2011 13:24

I have a dog because he is a much loved and well looked after family pet. When I bought him as a puppy i research looking after a dog not breeding it. Which was why I asked the question which appartently I should be so embaressed about. Lots of people ask question on this forum and ask for advise maybe we shouldnt ask in case we end up being embarressed!

OP posts:
HeresTheThingBooyhoo · 03/11/2011 13:25

why isn't your dog neutered?

MumblingAndBloodyRagDoll · 03/11/2011 13:32

Idiots on this thread. Dont you people see that your smugly bossy attitude keeps people OFF this topic and keeps people from asking questions when they could learn a lot???

Rhine other people on the htread hd already explained why it was a bad idea..but you simply HAD to come busling on and shake your finger despite the fact that the OP had listened. It's pathetic!

MumblingAndBloodyRagDoll · 03/11/2011 13:33

misdee are you talking about MY Staffy thread from yesterday? In what way did that seem like a joke to you??

Ephiny · 03/11/2011 13:35

I'm glad you decided to say no. Would you feel able to explain to the lady why you're saying no, i.e. why breeding like this isn't such a good idea? No need to be rude or critical obviously, just make your point? She may not have thought of it that way either, just as you hadn't.

I'd consider neutering as well, unless there's a particular reason you don't want to. In just the last year, there's been two separate occasions where owners have let their in-season bitch get away from them and run up to my dog in the park. He's been 'done' fortunately and was completely oblivious to what they were after (he's a bit clueless that way!), but if he hadn't been, it only takes a moment for them to 'do the deed'!

I have no idea why anyone would be letting their bitch run off-lead in a popular dog-walking park at such a time, but there's no accounting for other people's stupidity! You could say it's their problem not yours, but still it's a litter of unplanned randomly cross-bred pups with an uncertain future, not a good outcome.

misdee · 03/11/2011 13:36

when it went from your dh going to see a staffy, to the back yard breeder talk and alkl the talk about irressponsible breeding, then this popped up today, i just went hmmm

i dont think your thread was a joke, and i think you have contacted about a rescue dog now? any news on that?

I think that I get what misdee means, Mumbling - that following on from a thread in which a backyard breeder was apparently attempting to sell a Staffie puppy and couldn't see what was wrong with that, it's a little odd/suspicious to have someone coming along next day and posting about breeding her dog with a stranger's that she met in the park.

The suspicion (for me at least, and presumably for misdee) was that the OP of this thread was on the wind-up, looking to get me banned for good :o cause a riot and not serious.

Sadly that's not the case.

Goldenbrown1981 · 03/11/2011 13:50

Sadly this does happen. A few months after we got our bitch 'done' I was asked by an owner if I would consider her having his puppies. I said that she was spayed so no and the woman (who I knew and often walked with) had a right go at me for not being willing to improve the breed and told me I was irresponsible and selfish and it was just because I could not be bothered with puppies. Bearing in mind we are talking about a poodle x so not technically a 'breed', my bitch has not been health tested (because I'm not breeding) and has seizures. But this woman insisted that I was in the wrong because they would have made "beautiful puppies". Which they would have, but what's the point of having beautiful puppies in a pound.

I wish I was more assertive in real life. i pretty much appologised to her and just never walked with her again, when I should have had a right go at her for being irresponsible.

Rhinestone · 03/11/2011 13:58

mumbling I make no apology for being forceful about this. Some of us on here see the end result of people not educating themselves about ALL the issues of dog ownership BEFORE they get a dog. That's what I consider pathetic.

Only you know if you fall into that category too, if you do then deal with it. I'm not sorry for contributing to your hurt pride.

DooinMeCleanin · 03/11/2011 14:03

I have a Whippet who is actually probably some sort of lurcher. She is very, very, very tiny. She is the kind of dog someone who only likes puppies would love. She is over 1 year old now and still looks like a tiny puppy.

I also have a Greyhound. They're both black and white. They look identical bar their size.

I have been asked more than once when I next plan to breed my Grey and if her 'pup' is for sale Hmm

I try to best to politely explain why they rescue if they want a Grey or lurcher.

I was asked if I would 'put' my Whippy some-ones unneutered dog because 'she'd be a great racer. She could turn on a six pence that one' Hmm Angry. I got told I was an idiot for not breeding from her because I could make a fortune with a good racer like that Angry. I was that pissed off and taken a back by this point 'Stay the fuck away from my dog" was the best I could manage. It then took me three hours to walk her home because I didn't want them to see where we lived so I went to my mums for a coffee and fag but don't tell DH because I told him I kept walking until they dissapeared and I missed bed and bath time aka the nightmare hour for the children

I think, sadly, it is common for people to 'match' their dogs with random pups they meet in the park. It doesn't make it right though and it certainly doesn't make those who vehemently disagree with it wrong.

I'm glad you changed your mind OP. There's nowt wrong with asking a question. Breeding is a very touchy subject on all doggy forums. The bitching wasn't aimed at you. It was more aimed at the other woman and BYBs in general.

DogsBestFriend · 03/11/2011 14:04

Rhinestone, I think you are referring to the OP, not to Mumbling, aren't you? Confused

Poor Mumbling's going to end up with a persecution complex at this rate! :o

Slubberdegullion · 03/11/2011 14:06

Quick question Rhinestone. I assume you have a dog. What method(s) do you use to train your dog?

cedar12 · 03/11/2011 14:08

I am a nurse and so a big part of my job is to educate people about there health etc and if I went around talking to people like Rhinestone has to me I wouldnt get very far on them coming around to my way of thinking. I have totally taken on board the advise on this thread so I would not consider that to be pathetic. What i would consider to be pathetic is to continue to be aggresive about the matter when I have taken the advise.

OP posts:
bemybebe · 03/11/2011 14:13

Dooin apart from the usual blahblah on the tag of my choc lab, I have "spayed". Just in case someone nicks her for that reason alone. She is very friendly and i am shit scared...

Rhinestone · 03/11/2011 14:16

DBF - Mumbling called my reaction 'pathetic' in her post at 13:32:02. I'm simply saying that I consider people not educating themselves BEFORE becoming responsible for another life rather pathetic! I only referred to Mumbling because she seemed to be assuming that I was talking about her too due to her Staffy thread yesterday but I haven't read it so wasn't but that's why I said, "Only you know if you fall into that category too..."

Slubber - yes, I have had a few, all rescues. I currently have a husky so as any husky owner knows, they are virtually untrainable! Grin And if anyone has any advice, I will gratefully accept! But basically, positive training methods all the way. Nothing remotely connected to pack theory / alpha dog / Cesar Milan etc.

Rhinestone · 03/11/2011 14:18

cedar you win, you are obviously a far more patient and caring person than I am.
