Having to sell puppies....

and its breaking my heart. We had planned to sell them when she got pregnant but then she only had 2 and decided to keep them.
I have since got a job and know its not fair to have 3 dogs in the garden all day so we decided to sell.
Its horrible i love them so much already (they are nearly 10 weeks old)
just felt like a rant

Please, please, please dont sell them! Hand them over to a rescue who will ensure that they get fantastic homes and offer lifelong support and advice - oh and will also ensure they get spayed/neutered as soon as they are old enough - to prevent any similar things happening to them when they are older

Sell the pups to a stranger - and who knows who the buyer is or what they'll do to them. Are YOU going to homecheck? Are YOU going to follow up? Are YOU going to insist on meeting all the family members, their mortgage documents or assurance from their landlord to prove they are allowed a dog? Are YOU going to insist upon seeing a vet's reference? Are YOU going to fully vaccinate the pups and pay for AND ENSURE that they are neutered/spayed asap?

Even if you sell to someone you know, what happens if and when THEY don't want/can't keep their pup, either in a few weeks or when he's 14 years old? Or is he going to end up passed to an unsuitable home or taken to the vet to be killed? Are YOU going to take him back? Even in 15 years time if need be?

Which is why you've been asked to go via rescue by terrier.

And FGS - please DON'T leave dogs unattended in gardens, even when you're at home. DOG THEFT IS RIFE. Only yesterday an MNer was posting desperately on here having had her dogs stolen from her garden.

And finally, FGS get the poor bitch spayed as soon as humanely possible. There are enough unwanted dogs and puppies being killed, abused and neglected out there as it is.

OP is in Ireland - sadly even more risk to homeless dogs there than here, please get them into a reputable rescue.

The country whose animal welfare law hasn't been revised for over 100 years, which has "closed pounds" where ALL dogs come out in a black plastic bag, which has some of the most utterly fucking disgracefully heartless owners and pound managers I've ever dealt with...

It's not fair to leave one dog in a garden all day, in fact if anything it's worse because they don't even have the others for company. Either way it's not good, and there's the risk of theft as well as people have pointed out.

I could say hand them over to a rescue (this is a much, much better option than selling them!) but really they're your responsibility and your problem, and rescues are so full and overflowing that they can barely take dogs in real emergency cases. So I would say the right thing to do is to keep them. But if you do this, you must make sure you're providing a better environment for them than being left alone in a garden all day. Have you considered dog walkers or sitters, or you or your partner trying to rearrange your working hours, or do you have any friends or family who could help out? I'd be inclined to explore these things first, and then consider rescue as a last resort if there's no way you can manage.

But that's your choice. Either way, please don't sell them. And do make sure the mum is spayed so this can't happen again.

you all seem to think you have the right to tell ppl what to do. i posted for a bit of sympathy and maybe advice on how to make it as nice and easy for me and the pups and i get this.
its none of you business if my bitch gets neutered or if the puppys do nor is it any of your business what i do with my dogs while i work.
they are all cared for and looked after and loved.
situations changed and im making a decision for the puppies to have a better life.

Um, at the risk of being flamed - the OP did not say that she was going to put the pups in a sack and throw them in the river.

She said that their dog had pups, they were going to keep them but since her circumstances have changed this is no longer possible so she will sell them.

I know it is not well thought of on this topic, but all around the country, people do sell dogs.

If you had given the OP advice on how to find good owners for the puppies rather than berating her, you may have actually helped the dogs.

For someone who was never going to post in the Doghouse again you're quick to come back to respond to the SOLE post which gives you sympathy - a post by someone who, as far as I'm aware, has no involvement in picking up the pieces of irresponsible BACKYARD breeding.

And Mme, I did give advice - bloody good advice - which was to endorse terriers plea to hand the pups to rescue and NOT to sell them, together with genuine and very serious reasons why the OP should not sell them.

Advice borne out of solid experience, not just made up as I go along.

That the OP doesn't like the advice she has been given and is name-calling and stropping is not my problem.

Come on. It is clear from the OP that she is out of her depth. She is not a nasty backyard breeder, just a normal person whose dog had pups.

My parent's dog had puppies when I was a child and we sold them - to the best of our knowledge - to decent people. Most of whom we knew. I bought my dog from a person very like Emmery.

There are a few posters on MN dogs section at the moment who jump on anyone who dares to suggest getting a dog from a private breeder, or selling puppies.

I am fully aware of the problems that rescuers face, but this is not the way to go about it.

And the reason this is the only post in support of the OP is more to do with your aggressive posts than the fact that every single MNetter agrees with you. Who wants to be flamed?

Another fact: the OP IS a backyard breeder.

The OP wanted, in her own words "sympathy" and "how to make it nice and easy" for her. My sympathy's with the dogs because I see and pick up the pieces of cases like this time after time after time.

Please re-read my first post and note the points about selling without rescue back up. Particularly please note the parts where it is pointed out that the OP cannot carry out the checks which rescue will, much less take the pups back if it all goes tits up 12 days, 12 months or 12 years later. These are sufficient response to your comment that your parents sold their dog's puppies.

And I beg to differ with you again... given your reaction to the OPs post and subsequent flounce and given that you are NOT doing what I, ScuttleButter, QuietTiger and many others do and presumably never have done, nor presumably have you seen at first hand and on a daily basis what we see I doubt very much that you are fully aware of the problems which rescuers face at all. Which is fine, but please remember that we are painfully aware of the problems caused by the OP and those with similar attitudes to dog welfare, not just by her actions alone but by the example she sets to other backyard breeders/potential backyard breeders and those who are willing to leave dogs and pups unattended in gardens.

I think I've said all I need to, I don't want to lower myself to the OP's level of name-calling and I believe that yours is currently the only voice of sympathy and support for her and her irresponsible actions and intentions Mme. I can only say - "go figure" - and leave it there.

ETA - Mme - It was Korma with the FFS, not me, although we both did the angry faces, along with Korma. Others just thought the OP was too unbelivable for words and posted, you'll notice.

It has been pointed out - repeatedly - on MN that TheDoghouse topic is not the place to go if you want NEUTRAL opinions. If you want to ask about selling or buying a dog. If you do not want to go to a shelter and adopt an adult dog. If you want to buy a puppy. Because of posters like you who jump on anyone even considering doing something other than going to a rescue.

I don't know if there are others who agree with me, I don't really care. I do know that people like you make others reluctant to post in TheDoghouse topic.

Your first post was aggressive. Terrier managed to suggest a rescue, as did Ephiny without the patronisingly aggressive tone that you took.

No, I don't have the experience of what happens to dogs who are abandoned, but I have seen plenty of dogs sold by private "backyard breeders". They are not all bad.

But you don't want to hear that.

The fact that a rescue will ask a few questions that a "backyard breeder" might not, or that a rescue is prepared to take back a dog if things don't work out doesn't make it any less likely that a dog will be homed with someone unsuitable, and to suggest as much is ridiculous.

No, it's not ideal that the op has ended up with puppies she is now unable to manage. It is not ideal that the dog got pregnant in the first place. But it is not the crime of the century to home puppies to people who want a dog. it is patronising in the extreme to suggest that only a rescue or a reputable breeder could possibly responsibly home a puppy to someone who isn't going to abuse it.

The fact is that you can never be any more sure as a rescuer that your rescue dog isn't going to end up on the side of the m25 any more than you can if you sold it out of your home. Just because you ask a few more questions and make a commitment to take the dog back doesn't mean that the people you're questioning are genuine or are giving you truthful answers.

When I was a child it was the norm to buy dogs from "backyard" breeders. Now it is less so, and yet the prevalence of animal cruelty has risen massively. Imagine that.

You seem to have missed the bit in bold when you quoted her.

I agree about The Dog House. I try never to post in it for advice unless really desperate. There is too much nasty judging and condemnation.
