She had emergency surgery last night and they had to remove about 7 inches of her intestine, plus open her stomach to find and remove a blockage.

She is v poorly and at high risk of peritonitis , and the next 48 hours are critical for her.

The emergency out of hours vet operated on her last night and she is now at our local vet being given one to one intensive care.

We are all v worried.

She is only 14 months old.

goodness! poor thing :(

will keep fingers crossed xx

lou33 · 28/02/2011 10:12

thank you

she swallowed a thin elastic band, goodness knows where she found that, and it hooked itself onto the stomach where it leads to her gut. Then as she wasnt feeling well she tried eating grass to make herslef sick, but the grass just caught around the elastic band more and more, stretching it and getting caught in the gut and causing a blockage

the emergency vet said if we hadnt taken he when we did things would have been even worse

thank goodness for insurance, as so far the estimated bill is £2000 just for the emergency vet

hope she soon recovers, x

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 28/02/2011 10:57

fingers crossed for you Lou

lou33 · 28/02/2011 11:21

Its so worrying. She looks so thin and poorly. Because they had to open her stomach she is at high risk of peritonitis. I am hoping her age and fitness level will work in her favour.

Esian · 28/02/2011 11:22

Fingers crossed here too

MmeLindt · 28/02/2011 11:24

Oh, poor little soul.

We had a springer when we were kids. She ate everything, the daft mutt. They are lovely dogs. Hope she pulls through. Thank goodness you took her to the vet.

WoodRose · 28/02/2011 11:27

How horrible! Fingers and paws crossed for you. If it is of any comfort, my elderly female collie had to be opened up twice when she was 12 and 13 years old. She came through both operations with flying colours. I'm sure your dog's age and fitness will be a huge advantage for a full recovery.

lou33 · 28/02/2011 11:28

Funnily enough Dora doesn't usually chew stuff, so not had much trouble there. The saddest sight was her trying to wag her tail when she saw me again, but she felt too ill to do it properly

Thats good to hear thank you.

the vet just rang and said she is refusing to eat, so they are trying to hand feed her by putting it in her mouth, if she still wont eat they will syringe it into her, and if they cant do that they will put a tube into her stomach to get food into her

it is really important she eats, as they told me that not only did the emergency vet have to take a section of intestine away, but she also had 2 holes in other areas, so it is pretty much certain that she will get peritonitis.

they are going to treat her as though she does have it already to try and minimise the risk of it escalating, and will take bloods twice a day to compare fro infection
she may also need more surgery and possibly even a referral to a specialist, if she makes it that far

she asked us to think about at what point we would say enough was enough if she goes downhill

kids are sobbing , i am not far behind

everything crossed for you.xx

kid · 28/02/2011 18:33

I've been thinking about her constantly and I am praying that she pulls through.
Please keep up updated lou. I hope she keeps the food down and that it gives her enough energy to eat something for herself

Hang in there Dora, you have to get strong and hurry home to your lovely family who are all missing you so much xxx

lou33 · 28/02/2011 20:21

Ty
I went to see her earlier. The vet said she is tolerating food by syringe, tho at half the normal amount. They dont want to give her more right now in case she vomits and bursts the stitches in her stomach.

We have been told it is 50/50 right now and to take it one day at a time. She has loads of meds pumping into her including methadone, and she does have early stage peritonitis, so its a case of holding our breath and ctossing everything for her.

Dawnybabe · 28/02/2011 20:57

Fingers crossed for you Dora x x x

kid · 28/02/2011 21:17

its a good sign that she has managed to keep the little bit of food down that they have given her so far. Lets hope she can continue to tolerate it and that they can increase the amount they are feeding her slowly.
I am so worried about her so I can only imagine how you must be feeling right now.

Thank you for taking the time to update, I hope you are able to post some more positive news soon.

Everytime my phone gets a FB update, my heart skips a beat as I want to hear the news but am scared at the same time of not hearing the news I am hoping for about dear little Dora

fruitshootsandheaves · 28/02/2011 22:54

Keeping my fingers crossed for you too. I have a springer, he ate a needle and cotton when he was about that age!
