She had emergency surgery last night and they had to remove about 7 inches of her intestine, plus open her stomach to find and remove a blockage.

She is v poorly and at high risk of peritonitis , and the next 48 hours are critical for her.

The emergency out of hours vet operated on her last night and she is now at our local vet being given one to one intensive care.

We are all v worried.

She is only 14 months old.

hope she has a good night and is feeling a bit better tomorrow :)

Baffledandbewildered · 01/03/2011 00:29

Every thing crossed for you both. One of our dogs had 18"of intestines removed when she was about 7 months old and came through it ok . Also one we bred had the same problem as yours eating odd thing and having to have op and they were ok in the end. Hopefully yours will be the same good luck

coinoperatedgirl · 01/03/2011 02:42

Oh I'm crossing my fingers, poor love. I don't have a dog but would love to. Really really hope she pulls through.

My cat had cat flu and a broken leg and all sorts and pulled through.

Really hope your dog will be ok.

maras2 · 01/03/2011 04:38

Not realy a doggie person but my heart goes out to you and your family.I know what it's like to have a poorly pet.Thank God for the vets who do amazing work.I'll say a prayer to St. Francis the patron saint of animals,he's allways been very good to me and mine.

MmeLindt · 01/03/2011 07:53

How is she this morning, Lou?

lou33 · 01/03/2011 09:13

Thanks for your concern everyone.

i havent heard from the vet yet this morning, she said she would ring by about 10, as they do rounds on the sick animals in their care and discuss their care plans

i am hoping that as she didnt call me in the early hours of this morning, when she went in to give dora more medication, that no news is good news, even if the good news means no change iyswim

i will update as soon as i can when i have some news, and am taking my older 2 for a brief visit at 11 this morning, and my younger 2 after school, so will be able to see her and the vet myself for more info

lou33 · 01/03/2011 12:26

The vet called and there has been no change . The visit with the girls to see her has been delayed until 2, so will be able to update then.

Thinking about you and really hoping for a good outcome for your dog. I guess no change at least means she hasn't gone downhill.

lou33 · 01/03/2011 14:40

Well i just got back from seeing her, and whilst they say no change medically, she certainly looked more her normal self. I saw her being taken for a wee, drip still attached, and she was clearly walking more steadily.

When we went into see her she tried to sit on dd2, who had sat on the flior to greet her :)

Some of her improvement is due to the methadone making her feel better, but even so i was relieved to see her being more herself iyswim

Fingers crossed, hoping so much for continued improvement Lou.

You must be exhausted... please try to take it easy and be kind to yourself.

Abr1de · 01/03/2011 15:19

Fingers crossed she carries on improving.

3cutedarlings · 01/03/2011 16:17

Oh your poor little puppy :( (poor you :( ) have everything crossed that all will be well for her.

PortBlacksandGinLane · 01/03/2011 16:22

Fingers crossed for her - she sounds as if she is doing well (weak Smile)

My pup swallowed two (yes, two) razor blades many years ago and had to have some intestine removed - he is now a crumbly 12 year old and it has done him no lasting harm....and a friends dog did the same with a box of staples Hmm and she is fine too.

I realise that it is still serious for your pup but just wanted to let you know they can recover...

lou33 · 01/03/2011 16:35

Thank you.

I just got back from taking my boys to see her. She has been sick once, but the vet thinks it is down to all her meds rather than another blockage (they did another x ray today) . Her tummy is a bit sore , she was whimpering a bit, but i think that could be because she tried to put her front paws on ds2 in his wheelchair

I saw the vet and she says she is pleased with everything so far but is still remaining cautious.

I take this all as good news :-)

Fingers continuing to be crossed here Lou.

Scuttlebutter · 01/03/2011 17:55

Everything still crossed here for you all Smile

MotherJack · 01/03/2011 18:08

I've been lurking on this, unable to add anything more than everyone else has done, but have everything crossed for her and all of you, Lou.

kid · 01/03/2011 21:59

It's sounding promising, I'll be happier when the vet confirms she is over the worst of it though.
I'm so pleased to hear she is showing signs of improvement.

lou33 · 02/03/2011 10:09

Good morning.

I missed a call from the vet earlier as was in a meeting, but she left a brief voicemail.

Dora was comfortable and even managed to eat by herself a small amount last night. She seems less tender but her wound is oozing so that needs watching.

I will get a proper update when i can get hold of the vet again.

OP posts:
kid · 02/03/2011 17:27

Poor Dora, I really wish we could fast forward her recovery. It's great to hear she has eaten a bit of food herself. Let's hope that wound heals quickly without causing anymore issues. The poor little love has been through enough already.

WoodRose · 02/03/2011 18:23

Great news that she is managing to eat a bit of food. Hope her wound sorts itself out soon. It sounds as if she is in very good hands!Smile

lou33 · 02/03/2011 19:39

You wont believe this but my 8 month old patterdale jack russell cross was just attacked by a german shephard

OP posts:
MotherJack · 02/03/2011 19:47

Oh Lou. Like you need this - is he/she ok? Any puncture wounds or something you can clean up with salt water?

FWIW my pup got attacked by a GS (12 years ago now!) but he still loved them afterwards. (Just not the one that attacked him.)

lou33 · 02/03/2011 20:46

he is covered in puncture wounds,to his legs, chest , neck and testicles and he has a bloodshot eye and a swollen snout and a bloody nose

fortunately he is mainly ok, aside from the puncture wounds and bruising, his lungs sound clear and both pupils are equally reactive

the vet gave him a couple of jabs and a course of medication to bring home , and the woman who owned the dog has paid for that

my two girls were walking him on the lead and on their way back to the house, when the woman pulled into her drive and opened the boot

at which point the gs jumped out of the car and went straight for eddie, grabbing him by the throat and shaking him about

dd1 was kicking the dog trying to get him off, and he tried to bite her, and the owner was doing the same, and suffered cuts to her hands as a result

dd2 is traumatised by it all,. cryiong and shaking replaying it in her head

and once again my vet has been fantastic, i rang just after they shut and when she heard what had happened she stayed behind to see eddie and check him out

once that was sorted she updated me wrt dora, and the one good thing today is that she is much more alert and her usual self

she has eaten on her own, every 2 hours, and everything is looking hopeful

in fact she said there is a possibility if she continues to improve , that we might be able to bring her home tomorrow evening, with a load of meds , so we can care for her at home

when i was talking to the vet receptionist waiting for the gs owner to settle our bill on the phone, dora heard my voice and started whining, so i went to see her and she was sitting up wagging her tail at me, pushing her paw through the crate to say hello

so its been quite a week here, one i wont be sad to see the back of tbh

i am really hoping she comes home tomorrow, then i can start breathing instead of holding my breath

OP posts:
bumpybecky · 02/03/2011 20:50

goodness me you poor thing!

I hope the rest of the week is calmer and that they both recover quickly :)
