She had emergency surgery last night and they had to remove about 7 inches of her intestine, plus open her stomach to find and remove a blockage.

She is v poorly and at high risk of peritonitis , and the next 48 hours are critical for her.

The emergency out of hours vet operated on her last night and she is now at our local vet being given one to one intensive care.

We are all v worried.

She is only 14 months old.

Dora is pretty much back to normal now i think. Seeing as she woke my bf this morning by standing on his chest and putting her paw on his face then demanding he throw a toy for her, lol

LOL It's amazing how quickly they can bounce back! So pleased to hear she's doing so well x

lou33 · 06/03/2011 11:29

I know, its fantastic, especially when you think that last sunday she was hours from death.

I cant imagine i would be so full of beans if i had that amount of surgery!

Fantastic news Lou, I'm SO glad to hear it. :)

kid · 06/03/2011 13:56

(vallhala, I sent you a message just incase you didn't see it)

SoupDragon · 06/03/2011 14:04

Just read the story from start to finish. Glad it has a happy ending!

lou33 · 06/03/2011 14:18

I just dropped the insurance claim form to the emergency vet, and took dira along. The vet was not there but the same receptionist was. She was delighted to see her looking so well. She said they dont usually see the animals once they are better, so it was good to see her.

OP posts:
ChippingInMistressSteamMop · 06/03/2011 14:23

Yeah, really lovely for them to see her looking so good, especially so soon :)

lou33 · 06/03/2011 19:10

i still cant believe it was only last sunday we thought we might lose her!

every day i can see her usual self coming through more and more

she has gone from carefully moving herself about, and growling at the other dogs when she got home, to warn them to leave her in peace (which was thurs evening), and yelping a bit when she tried to get on or off my bed, to dashing about here and there with the others, and playing tug of war with eddie

she is still only allowed short walks on the lead , just so she can go to the toilet, and still on a special diet and her meds, but her scar is looking great and has stopped oozing and she is starting to look less skinny

and best of all is she is more of her cheeky playful self, with bright eyes and no droopy ears

i am amazed at her speedy recovery, if i had the same kind of surgery i really doubt i would be dashing about like nothing had happened after only a week!

i will be forever grateful to the vets who treated her, they did a brilliant job

i will be sending a personalised card to our local vet to say thank you for about the 100th time :)

OP posts:
kid · 06/03/2011 20:53

so pleased she has continued to make a super recovery.
I really wish I had a vet I could trust and rely on. I only use the vet as a last resort, it really shouldn't be like that.

Well done Dora, I'm looking forward to meeting you when you are all better. I thought I'd missed my chance for a short while, but you proved you are a strong girl Smile

lou33 · 06/03/2011 21:34

we will arrange a springer meet when she is fully recovered and her scar is properly healed

i cant praise my vet highly enough, especially after this, it's a shame you arent local to me

Hi lou33, only just read this thread...

I'm so pleased Dora is okay Smile

I have a 12-year old Staffie cross (rescue from Battersea) and he has been through unbelievable numbers of ops involving general anaesthetics. Having accompanied him through all these procedures, I can confirm the resilience of dogs - it's amazing how they bounce back, sometimes within hours!

I'm so pleased your young doggie is on the mend Smile

x

Momentarynamechange · 06/03/2011 23:45

p.s. kid where in the country are you? With the track history we've had with our staffie, a vet we can put our trust in has been paramount. (we've moved around a bit and some have been shamefully crap and some have been amazing - we're currently on amazing thank god!)

sunnydelight · 06/03/2011 23:47

Oh I am so glad to her she's ok - we lost a puppy in similar circumstances and it's devestating.

kid · 07/03/2011 06:23

threestepsforward I'm in east London.
My previous puppy died at 7 months old during a neutering operation which is why I don't have much faith in vets.

My current vet (different place to where my puppy died) was recommended by my dig trainer, however when I visited, I didn't like the feel of it there. They were just interested in my money and didn't seem very caring or interested in my puppy.

spirelass1981 · 07/03/2011 09:17

Lou ,
I have just read this thread from start to finish and Im so happy that Dora is ok... There is nothing worse than seeing your dear dog off to the vets and worrying tht they will never come home :( xx

I lost my yorkie Prince only 10mths after he came into my life in 2006 and I still miss him everyday.. I have a alsatian/doberman cross now , he is 4 and is the biggest bundle of stupidness fun going lol x x

From one devoted dog owner to another , Im so glad both your dogs r ok and she carries on to improve and rofl at the bacon attemption theft lol x x

Momentarynamechange · 07/03/2011 09:44

Hi kid,

I'm so sorry to hear about your puppy, how awful, and not suprising you've lost faith Sad

Is your dog insured? I used to live in Brixton and took my dog to a vet in Wandsworth, she was amazing. The vet before that basically nearly killed my dog too. He had an ulcer and was bleeding internally. I pointed out the fact his gums and tongue had turned white and he couldn't walk for 2 minutes without stopping and she said 'well he's got a bug, you wouldn't want to walk if you felt sick either'.

When I took him to the vet in wandsworth she sorted him out, and when better said she wasn't hopeful he was going to make it when I came in. (blood count was 9 for something, should have been in the 40s etc.).

She was recommended to me and I have her to thank for my dog still being with me today Smile. I can PM you if you want the address (or post it on here but wasn't sure about advertising rules lol! Is it okay to post it on here?).

She's quite pricy but if you're insured you should be okay Smile I know it's a bit of a distance from where you live, but like you say a vet you can trust is priceless.

threesteps x

Momentarynamechange · 07/03/2011 09:45

Sorry for the thread deviation lou33, hope you're doggies are good today Smile

kid · 07/03/2011 19:44

Thanks for the offer of recommending a vet threestepsforward, but its not realistic for me to travel that far.
Even the one I am using at the moment is about 20 minute drive away (and in the congestion charging zone)
I should have a local vet that I could use in an emergency but there is no way I am every going back to the one that my puppy died at. They couldn't have followed procedure, he was a healthy pup and should not have died during such a routine procedure.

As he did die under anaesthetic, I was extra worried about Dora. They would have been the same age now and look very alike. I am so delighted Dora lived to tell the tale and I do wish I had such a wonderful vet. Maybe I should look around again to find out if there is a lovely vet who could look after my precious puppy the way I want them to.

He has to go for vaccinations in July so I'll have to sort something out by then. BTWm yes, he is insured.

squeakytoy · 07/03/2011 19:51

Kid, I am in SE London/Surrey and we have a fantasic vets surgery. About 4 miles from Wimbledon if that is any help.

squeakytoy · 07/03/2011 19:52

sorry, just read back and realised you are E London, not South East.

Momentarynamechange · 07/03/2011 22:15

No worries kid, I just know how important it is to have faith in your vet and really empathised with your awful story as I was nearly in that position myself because of a negligent vet (scary looking one at that!).

I'd ask other local dog owners - people rarely seem to be apathetic about their vets, either love them or hate them, depending on their experiences, so you could get some good recommendations.

Best of luck
x

kid · 07/03/2011 22:38

thats a great idea, thanks. I know loads of other dog owners as everyone stops to fuss my puppy. He doesn't even look like a puppy anymore, just a big, soppy, bouncy dog lol

lou33 · 08/03/2011 21:16

Hi, if anyone is interested i have just posted a pic of dora on my profile

It was taken this afternoon, which is 9 days after her operation, not that you would know it looking at her Grin
