Can we all cross our fingers for my springer please?

She had emergency surgery last night and they had to remove about 7 inches of her intestine, plus open her stomach to find and remove a blockage.

She is v poorly and at high risk of peritonitis , and the next 48 hours are critical for her.

The emergency out of hours vet operated on her last night and she is now at our local vet being given one to one intensive care.

We are all v worried.

She is only 14 months old.

They are gorgeous. My springer is very un-springer like at the moment as she's been clipped but it so much easier to check for ticks!

lou33 · 09/03/2011 11:23

Thank you:)

They are both adorable.

I had a 'foster' springer for a while, she was 6 and adorable, broke my heart having to hand her back :(

I haven't had a good time with JRs - but I think Eddie could turn my head :)

lou33 · 09/03/2011 12:14

Lol
Eddie is a patterjack. Half jack russell half patterdale, and very sweet natured, always wanting a bit of love and affection. He wakes ds2 every morning by nibbling his nose :)

Aw.... Dora is the same colouring as Dill. :) Except he's a cocker. Everyone thinks he is a springer despite him being very small!

lou33 · 09/03/2011 15:05

oh i love cockers, there is a beautiful golden cocker in my road by the name of harvey, he has this great tuft of hair on the top of his head, that looks like a combover has gone wrong Grin

when i changed dora's dressing last night i decided not to put another one on, as the wound is looking great, the skin has knitted back together, there is no inflammation or oozing, and she really hates me changing it, as now the hair round there is growing back, it hurts when i am trying to pull it off

she has finished one course of tablets, and nearly through the other 2 courses, as well as almost finished her special food diet

eddie has finished one of his courses too, so things are looking good for them both

for some reason though, dora is coming into season a month early, which is not great, as eddie isnt due to be castrated until 2 weeks time, so i will have to keep them apart or her in a nappy thingy til he is safe

and fingers crossed they dont find their way into my bedroom for a few days as it is being decorated, and i can imagine all kinds of chaos they could get up to in there!

Oh, I need to find a photo of Dill... he has the maddest hair in the Cocker world. I grew up with a golden one - we spent hours giving him daft hairstyles :o

SoupDragon · 09/03/2011 16:54

Dill

When he's not gazing adoring up at the bacon in my hand me, it falls into a fabulous quiff.

SoupDragon · 09/03/2011 17:07

Sounds like Dora's made a fabulous recovery :)

lou33 · 09/03/2011 19:10

Oh he is a lovely looking dog :)

Thought you might like to know that the owner of the gsd came round earlier with a couple of gifts for Eddie :)

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 10/03/2011 19:01

Has he made a full recovery?

What is she doing about her dog?

lou33 · 11/03/2011 15:05

yes soup, he is fine now (sorry for delay my pc is out of use atm as i am decorating so having to use dd's laptop when i can)

i did post further down the thread of the things she had done to prevent it happening again

she has bought a muzzle, anchor points for the dog to be attached to in the car boot, and got a gsd trainer in

when we spoke she said even after one session she feels better about how to control the dog and get it behaving as it should, and once again offered to pay for any costs eddie could need in the future as a result of her dog

Anyway , i just got back from taking dora for a check up, and they are delighted with her

she has finished her tablets and her wound has healed beautifully, so now all i have to do is gradually phase her normal dog food in over a week, instead of the special diet she has been on

the vet said she is amazed at how fast she has recovered, though still thinner than before of course, but she looks great

she is back to racing about the garden with the other dogs trying to catch up with her, running in endless circles loving the fact they cant keep up unless she wants them to Grin

Dora has the runs today and has been sick again.

I called the vet. They said it could be too soon to have tried weaning her off her post op food so to keep her on that only again, for now.

If she doesnt pick up in 24 hours she has to be checked

ChippingInMistressSteamMop · 15/03/2011 12:50

Oh poor Dora - hopefully she'll soon perk up if you keep her on the post op food a bit longer x

Lovely of the GSD to come around with gifts etc. It sounds like she's doing all she can to keep other dogs safe.

SOUP - Dil is absolutely adorable!!! I just want to pick him up and snuggle him... how do you get anything done with him around??

lou33 · 15/03/2011 13:11

I hope it is just the change in diet.

She has also come into season a month early, which they think is down to all the stress of the last few weeks. This has scuppered plans to have eddie castrated before hand (he is booked in for the end of this month)

OP posts:
ChippingInMistressSteamMop · 15/03/2011 13:34

Yes - I read about the possible 'nappy'. It's a shame you can't just explain he's her brother and it's just not the done thing!! Grin

She has been doing so well - it must just be the change in food.

lou33 · 15/03/2011 13:49

I really hope so, but we started the changeover on friday, and her diarrhoea started yesterday afternoon, so not sure if it would take that long to affect her?

i am just probably more nervous than i would be usually, as this is how her blockage started, so am more on edge iyswim

ChippingInMistressSteamMop · 16/03/2011 11:08

How is she today Lou?

Of course you are on edge! x

lou33 · 16/03/2011 12:08

She seems quite alert and bright. She still has runny poos but they are now a normal colour rather than green. Today is the first full day back on her special diet so hopefully they will start to firm up. No more vomit either which is good!

OP posts:
lou33 · 16/03/2011 17:30

So far today she has done only two runny poos, but they look less runny iywsim.

She is currently lying next to me on her back wanting her tummy scratched Grin

MotherJack · 16/03/2011 17:36

Sorry to see she has had a bit of a blip, Lou. Hopefully onward and upwards from here though. Luckily she has you to have a close eye on her Smile

lou33 · 16/03/2011 17:41

Thanks. Now i just have to concentrate on getting the weight back on again , without her losing it this time

kid · 16/03/2011 22:22
