She had emergency surgery last night and they had to remove about 7 inches of her intestine, plus open her stomach to find and remove a blockage.

She is v poorly and at high risk of peritonitis , and the next 48 hours are critical for her.

The emergency out of hours vet operated on her last night and she is now at our local vet being given one to one intensive care.

We are all v worried.

She is only 14 months old.

oh god your poor other wee doggy.

Glad to hear it's good news about Dora though

MmeLindt · 02/03/2011 20:54

oh, Lou. Your poor little dog. And your poor girls, to have witnessed it. How old are your girls?

((hugs)) and Wine and [choc]

MotherJack · 02/03/2011 21:04

Oh bloody hell, Lou. I am so very sorry for all this dog related trauma you are all enduring. You know all GS's are not like this, don't you. Try not to react through the lead if you see another.

Your poor, poor wee boy.

I'm just so pleased you have good news on your girlie.

Big un-Mnetty hugs.

lou33 · 02/03/2011 21:39

honestly you couldnt make it up could you?

dd1 is 19 in april and dd2 is 14

my bf was on his way down when it happened, so i called him to tell him to hurry up, so i could try and calm them and check eddie, as well as ushering my boys out of the way

everyone was talking at once at me, so i wanted him to go with dd1 to visit the dog owner while i checked our one out and called the vet

i am going to go and talk to the woman tomorrow morning about it all

now i have the dilemma about what to do next wrt her dog

OP posts:
MotherJack · 02/03/2011 21:48

You certainly couldn't make it up, Lou.

Personally, I would not do anything wrt to her dog as I understood from your posts she took full responsibility and paid vet bills. It sounds like an accident and she probably knew about her dog - just made a mistake and admitted liability.

If you want to go down the other route, my dog was mauled, rolled on to his back and the dog tore his belly up. It was awful. My dog was not the first to be attacked by this particular dog but the police were not interested. He was not the last either. When the dog eventually bit another owner, the council eventually agreed to take it to court, but took it no further for reasons irrelevant to the case, and to the utter shame of the owner. But the point is it is hard work and generally not worth the effort. Sadly.

lou33 · 02/03/2011 22:26

i am going to go and speak to her tomorrow before i do anything

according to my girls, when she saw the dog jump out of her car and race towards eddie , she reacted as tho she knew he was aggressive and knew what was going to happen

it's all a bit worrying really

ChippingInMistressSteamMop · 02/03/2011 22:37

Lou - I'm really glad Dora seems to be picking up - paws crossed here, I was reading the thread with one eye closed, couldn't bear for her not to make it - but she sounds like she's doing well :)

Poor little Eddie :( How does he seem now?

All you can do is talk to the woman I guess. She sounds quite sensible and caring so hopefully she will make her own decision on what needs to happen. Keeping her dog on a lead and being a bit more careful maybe enough as it's another dog it attacked and not a person. I don't mean Eddie isn't as important!! - I just mean that it's quite easy to make sure her dog isn't in a position to attack another dog whereas it's not so simple to make sure it's not in a position to attack a person.

I hope that makes some sense!

Poor DD's they must have been really worried for Eddie :(

What a bloody week!

lou33 · 02/03/2011 22:45

the dog did try to bite dd1 tho, and bit his owner, she was bleeding after it

i will see what happens when we speak i guess

MmeLindt · 03/03/2011 07:17

Difficult, re the owner. If it was not the first time then she should have been more cautious when letting her dog out of the car.

It is very worrying that the dog was so aggressive. And that she could not pull him off.

musicposy · 03/03/2011 13:18

How's things today, lou?

lou33 · 03/03/2011 20:12

Hi. Sorry i am posting from my phone, so this will be brief.

The vet has let me bring Dora home with a complicated timetable of meds and an appointment tomorrow.

She also said they didnt expect her to make it, and she was hours from dying.

She is still weaker than normal of course but we are all delighted to have her home.

I have missed my furry daughter :-)

I am sure you will all give her every last bit of love you have, Lou.

Thinking of you xx

terrier141 · 04/03/2011 11:33

so sorry to hear this - hope she gets better soon - how scary for you! xx

lou33 · 04/03/2011 15:12

Hi.

I took dora back for a check up today and they are very pleased with her, and doesn't have to go back for a week.

A good end to a hideous week. I think i can finally breathe now.

ExitPursuedByABear · 04/03/2011 15:21

Just found your thread and was reading through it with my heart in my mouth. So pleased that Dora is doing well. I have just let my 3 1/2 yr old very smelly springer in - he was left outside to dry after bog snorkelling at lunchtime.

Hope Dora is soon back to her usual springer self.

MotherJack · 04/03/2011 16:29

That's fantastic news, Lou. I'm so pleased for you all. As you say, a rather positive end to a hideous week. Smile

SlubberKongWubba · 04/03/2011 16:37

Great news Lou.

What a horrendous week for you all, so glad to hear that everyone is doing OK.

ChippingInMistressSteamMop · 04/03/2011 17:00

Lou - that's really good news :)

How is Eddie doing??

Vallhala · 04/03/2011 17:04

What a relief for you all. I've been holding my breath for the poor mite myself and am SO glad that she's on the mend.

Hugs to Dora from the Vallhala household. :)

TheFlyingOnion · 04/03/2011 17:35

I so glad Dora seems to be ok.

A quick tip from an old-fashioned country vet I know; if your dog swallows something horrid (we were talking cling film in this instance) that could wrap itself around something inside, feed it with a small olive-oil soaked cotton wool ball. Apparently this helps the offending article work through.

I know it sounds drastic and I'm certainly not sure I ever want to try it (or how I would get my dog to swallow it) but could work in a dire emergency?

MmeLindt · 04/03/2011 17:42

Glad to hear that both dogs are doing better.

I unpacked a parcel today, that had lots of elastic bands around it. I was very very careful to ensure that they all went in the bin.

musicposy · 04/03/2011 22:45

Oh, I'm so pleased you've got her home. What a relief. Hopefully you have a better weekend/ week ahead. :)

kid · 04/03/2011 22:58

I am delighted you have Dora home and that the vet is pleased with her progress. It's been a very tough and emotional week for you all, one that I'm sure you never want to experience again.

I'm am delighted that you have had a happy outcome, I was so worried about Dora and was constantly checking for an update even though I was afraid of bad news. I hope she is enjoying being back at home and that she is being a good girl taking her medication!

lou33 · 05/03/2011 12:45

thanks all

dora and eddie are doing well, dora went as far as to try and steal a piece of bacon from dd2's plate today!

tfo, thank you for your advice, in this case we had no idea she had swallowed anything until the vet had operated, but i will bear it in mind in case the unthinkable happens again

wrt eddie and the german shepherd, my bf went and spoke to the owner again and she told him that she had the dog only for 2 weeks , and got it from a rescue centre

she added they had specifically asked for a dog with no aggressive behaviour towards other dogs or children, but had since called the centre and organised a trainer of gsd's to visit them, bought a muzzle and anchor points for the car so the dog is restrained in the boot

after hearing this news i have decided not to report it, as i dont think they could do any more than they already have to prevent any incidents again

OP posts:
ChippingInMistressSteamMop · 05/03/2011 13:04

I'm glad to hear they are both doing well :)

The woman does seem to have taken all possible steps and there really isn't anything else she could do except have it PTS :( I wonder which rescue it was - or if it was actually a pound and not a rescue Confused

Hopefully she will get all the training that she can and that and a lot of love will sort the GS out :)
