What TV ads are loved / hated at the moment?

I'm planning a few lessons on advertising for my Year 8 class, and would like to show them some current examples of adverts which they are likely to love or hate - I've gone blank. Any tips?

Thank you...

Go Compare (Go and fuck off and die!). don't like that one

John Lewis ad quite like that one.

do you mean print or broadcast ads?

GetOrfMoiLand · 10/05/2010 19:29

The one which is on Sky news right at this secong

Halifax ISA ISA baby

choufleur · 10/05/2010 19:32

i don't think there are many really funny ads at the moment. There was a NPSCC ad on a children's channel the other day with loads of characters from many channels all singing a medley of songs which was very good though. I've only seen it once.

CuppaTeaJanice · 10/05/2010 19:32

I hate that shouty safestyle double glazing advert.

And I want to punch the woman with the stupid fringe who slipped on the wet floor in the national accident helpline ad.

Alouiseg · 10/05/2010 19:32

Dislikes:

Go Compare - dreadful ad.

Anything telling us to get our tax returns in!!!! We're paying for that, cheeky buggers!

Any advert by the Government actually.

Likes:

John Lewis

pickledmonkey · 10/05/2010 19:34

like the specsaver where he shears the sheepdog by mistake and the milk milk! one with they cyclist, pirate and cow

CuppaTeaJanice · 10/05/2010 19:43

I hate the Cravendale 'MILK MILK' adverts. They don't make sense - why would an adult cow want milk?

I do like it when the annual Coca cola 'holidays are coming' train ad comes on. It means Christmas is nearly here!!

And there's an unintentionally funny one on the children's channels (for anyone who calls little girls bits 'mini'). It has a song that goes 'I play with my mini.........Baby Born'.

greenshoes · 10/05/2010 19:55

the travelodge advert with the bears is gorgeous!

Hate however: any of the cash for gold ads which are seriously low budget.

pickledmonkey · 10/05/2010 20:12

oh yes the ray winstone bear

specialsmasher · 10/05/2010 20:24

Ooh thank you! Great start. Off to youtube to research now.

'We buy any car dot com'
Lord give me strenght

Still giggle everytime I see a compare the meerkat one. lol. Genius.

poppy34 · 10/05/2010 20:40

Specsavers postman pat ones make me giggle. Dh got almost tearful re vodafone ad where bloke ducks out of work dinner to go comfort his daughter who has been dumped.

John lewis one leaves me cold- strikes me as smug rather than aspirational. Lloyds ones also as cartoons with thier funny noses annoy me.

ShadeofViolet · 10/05/2010 20:42

Yes, the Vodaphone one and the John Lewis ones are great.

I hate the Cillit Bang ones with that shouty man, and any compensation claim ones - especially the woman with the funny fringe who walks though reception.

oneofsuesylvesterscheerios · 10/05/2010 20:45

The one for Next is giving me ulcers at the moment, I find it so offensive.

Do they REALLY think we buy into the idea that two skeletons dressed in horrible Next clothes go on a road trip together, stop at a diner to spend some quality time with some parentless unsupervised children of all races who seem to have been dropped off in the desert, then join some really hip biker-types for a quick dance of unabandoned liberty, jump back into their car (leaving the children unattended again) and finish the day at a beach party with some more skeletons??? Do they?

Humph and
It is ubershit of the highest order.

schroeder · 10/05/2010 20:46

We love the one for lawn feed/seed(?) with the lovely frog.

also the meerkats they are brilliant and I love the accents especially (I have a polish friend and I could listen to him all day)

as for hate well obv we buy any car and go compare and daz is a pet peeve for me

oneofsuesylvesterscheerios · 10/05/2010 20:51

With my teachy hat on, I've been thinking how interesting it is that so many adverts try to promote their products as being very twee and cuddly and made by fairies in woods or in lollipop factories, or are very cute and cartoony. There are loads and it's a very cynical ploy. Would be interested in looking at that.

Ribena
Dell computers
Shreddies
Some car or other made of cake
Lloyds bank ('for the journey')
British gas

There are quite a few more but can't remember them offhand

I did a study of the Virgin train adverts a few terms ago, with the 80s soundtracks. they were very clever

KittyTwoShoes · 10/05/2010 20:54

We buy any car does my head in. As does Go Compare. And the meerkats are beginning to make me twitch - it was funny at first, but there's a line; in my opinion, they have crossed it. Also anything from Halifax, or anything with mass singing and dancing... ugh.

I also love the John Lewis one... and the BT ones with Nick from "My Family". And I also quite liked the pedigree "We're for dogs" one that used to be on, but I don't think they show the same one any more.

KittyTwoShoes · 10/05/2010 21:01

Oh and I also love the Vodafone one. And the Postman Pat one - though it does rather irritate me that there's a continuation mistake with the sack of letters and veg. Perhaps I'm just sad, though.

specialsmasher · 10/05/2010 21:10

Thank you all. So many hideous / brilliant ads to explore!

OP posts:
Tootlesmummy · 10/05/2010 21:12

John Lewis is the best.

Older adverts that you should include if possible, the Gorilla playing the drums in the cadburys advert - that is genius.

BigBadMummy · 10/05/2010 21:14

"good" adverts are the ones where you remember the product.

"bad" adverts are the ones you talk about but cannot remember the product.

IMO

Currently loving the John Lewis one but why is it all set in the present day? Why didn't it show her as a young girl in the 50s? And then move on?

Currently hate hate hating webuyanychuffingcardotcom. Irratating as hell but it gets people talking so is very effective.

And no discussion on advertising can go far without talking about the Cadbury gorilla.

PictureThis · 10/05/2010 21:20

Like the John Lewis one. Also like the Talk Talk adverts with people making shapes to make pictures. Hate the Crusher milkshake advert with the cartoon cats in the gym and the crap Manc accents. It's a bit creepy. DD saw it and thought it was scary.

Tootlesmummy · 10/05/2010 21:21

Exactly, the Cadbury's Gorilla is the best by a mile. Makes me want to play the drums...... and listen to Phil Collins. How bad is that!?

specialsmasher · 10/05/2010 21:37

Accessing gorilla now...

Doing Kia-ora too - just because!

OP posts:
BigBadMummy · 10/05/2010 21:42

Marmite is another good example.

and

"Birds Eye potato waffles, they're waffly versatile".

I remember that from being little!!!
