What TV ads are loved / hated at the moment?

I'm planning a few lessons on advertising for my Year 8 class, and would like to show them some current examples of adverts which they are likely to love or hate - I've gone blank. Any tips?

Thank you...

Was there ever a better advert than the Smash aliens?

Nowadays sky plus has alowed me to bypass ads altogether. That could be an interesting thing to discuss in the class as ads must work harder nowadays. In the past you had no choice but to watch them.

SixtyFootDoll · 10/05/2010 21:46

i love the new Cadbury with the Fools Gold theme here

SixtyFootDoll · 10/05/2010 21:48

Sorry Cahralatans - the only one I know

yummycrumpet · 10/05/2010 21:49

Love the Cow and Gate giggling toddlers, always makes me smile, all Specsavers ones are good but me and my sad family always look forward to the coke lorries at christmas.

Hate-
Webuyanycar.com and the one for Halifax where they are doing a radio show

differentID · 10/05/2010 21:50

I love the new Plenty ad. Juan Sheet is all you need!

Tootlesmummy · 10/05/2010 21:52

Almost forgot the Irn Bru christmas advert based on the snowman. Classic but probably only shown in Scotland!

GFatemybaby · 10/05/2010 21:54

OVEN PRIDE - so easy even a man can do it. ARGH!!!!!!

Hate Go compare and Halifax. Awful

Loved British Airways faces

Oh and the Virgin Atlantic 25year anniversary one. Maybe nostalgia is a good trick as it draws you in to "an exclusive club"

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 10/05/2010 21:54

Do not like the JL advert, just far too yummy mummy middle classy (although I do have lots of JL furniture)

Like the BT adverts with Kris Marshall

SixtyFootDoll · 10/05/2010 21:59

I know I cant bear the John Lwis ad

nannynobnobs · 10/05/2010 21:59

I am the only person in the country who is not bothered by 'webuyanycar.com'

Sidge · 10/05/2010 22:01

I liked the T-Mobile ad where the people in the train station started dancing - it's not showing lately though.

I don't like the John Lewis ad.

And this one could promote some discussion

Valpollicella · 10/05/2010 22:06

Any Car Any Car Any Car Any Any Any Any

KittyTwoShoes · 10/05/2010 22:09

I just don't understand the Cadbury gorilla one. What's it meant it to be about?

Tootlesmummy · 10/05/2010 22:11

It's not meant to be about anything, it's just a great advert.
The gorilla looks real and the music starting up with him thinking about playing the drums leading into him starting up. Classic.

KillerCleavage · 10/05/2010 22:16

Yes - the Garnier ones, or any one where we are supposed to believe that a filthy rich celeb (Davina, Cheryl, Claudia etc etc) uses a £3.99 diy hair dye she bought in Asda.

And I really hate those diet supplement ads (Adios?) with the silly cow dancing about in her pink knickers while the camera does lots of close ups on her pert arse.

I love the Crusha ads with the cats working out at the gym!

Itsthawooluff · 10/05/2010 22:24

Not new but I really liked the Beroca ad, with the people dancing on the running machines in the middle of a scandinavian square.

Hate any "my dog/cat is so precious, they need (insert name of over priced food aimed at people who can't tell the difference between a person and a pet)" adverts.

L'Oreal / Garnier / make up etc ads generally. Inspired by gene technology - my a**e.

Valpollicella · 10/05/2010 22:26

Oh the B3TA cats! Love that

Yes Kitty, the whole 'Spend your money, make yourself gaw-je-us and live in this faaabulous house, and just be generally gaw-je-us. That's what it is to be a woman!'

Not:

'No, darling, please go back into the sitting room, Mummy is doing her hair. No. NO! Don't touch that. It has chemicals in it, it'll burn your hands'

'So why are you putting it on your hair Mummy?'

sungirltan · 10/05/2010 22:33

onesofsue....i love you for knocking next he he. and when i worked there they were so smug that they didn't 'do tv ads'

he he

i hate the glade adverst where the two vacuous women say 'and its glad you know' - as if there is some assumed brand loyalty. glade have ideas above bloody air freshener!

any adverts that make assumptions that we owrry all the bloody time about bacteria on the inside of loos.

i love the advert for some garden product with the singing frog

CJCregg · 10/05/2010 22:37

Chocolate ads in general have often been pretty memorable:

Flake (woman ignoring phone whilst giving chocolate bar a BJ)

Milk Tray (Man in Black/James Bond fantasy)

Brilliant, brilliant Gorilla, makes me want to buy a bar of Dairy Milk now (but am on Week 3 of WeightWatchers, would you know it?)

CJCregg · 10/05/2010 22:39

Oh, and those hideous ads for products that deal with embarrassing body issues like constipation, 'wind' and sneezing/running leakage ... there is no way of making these things sexy, fair enough, but don't go for bloody tv advertising, please, it makes us all feel a bit ill.

hormonesnomore · 10/05/2010 22:40

My favourite adverts of all time

Valpollicella · 10/05/2010 22:42

Inside Tesco magazine (I KNOW. Don't shoot me down) this month there are two print ads that try to do a retro 'Mild Green, Fairy Liquid' thing with their images.

All good. Until the 2010 copy basically says that all good women buy Fairy.

I chucked the damn thing out on Sat so can't refer back to it or quote it directly. But as it made me so inscenced re streotypes of women doing the washing up, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have made that rage up

hormonesnomore · 10/05/2010 22:44

I like this one too

CJCregg · 10/05/2010 22:46

Hormones, I've never seen any of those - love them, especially Malcolm.

I always loved the idea that 'Minis have feelings too'. Twenty years on, I've finally bought one - the power of advertising

EmilyStrange · 10/05/2010 22:48

Oh I forgot about the Budweiser ads with the frogs. They really were the best EVER!
