All those poor little babies having their teeth out....

I think that doctor summed it up - parents equate loving their child with giving it what it wants all the time. Always saying 'yes'.

Leon just made me cry. Then I screamed at the mum. WHEELCHAIR????? She thought he needed a sit down because he got out of breath????? Vicious circle or what? And as for the 'genetic' cause... why didn't that doctor just tell her straight? Too much pussyfooting I thought, this is a child's life and health at stake here.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 13/04/2010 22:14

Yup, time to clean out all the smiley faces, turkey twizzlers, fruit shoots, gregs sausage rolls and um......lollipops. My fridge and freezer will be empty, what should I fill em up with? More space for vodka though hey.

Hulababy · 13/04/2010 22:14

Not seent he teeth part as DH turned over. But agree with Aitch that sometimes teeth is luck of the draw.

My 8y teeth have a proboemw ith eamel. Some of the back teeth (baby teeth that is) have very little enamel. This was caused ether during pregnancy - a virus or something I had may be cause) - or that DD may have had an illness or virus when the teeth were developing in infanthood. As a result on teeth 4 and 5 top and botton, both sides, there is very very little enamel and no protection for her teeth. No amount of cleaning or restricting diet will stop them from looking and being damaged teeth. Sadly last year one tooth did crumble and she had a small filling to build it up and yesterday that fell out. She is currently on ABs for it and may have to have it extracted However on a positive note it would seem her adult teeth so ar are not being affected - fingers crossed.

In relation to topic though - Think people also need to be aware too that dried fruit is just as bad for teeth as sweets are.

mamazon · 13/04/2010 22:16

because she is so deeply in denial if he told it to her straight then she would stop going to see him and he would be a lost cause.

the only promising aspect is the fact that he has started losing some weight. the poor lad will probably always be overweight to a degree but hopefully he will lose enough to have a fighting chance

mankyscotslass · 13/04/2010 22:16

Mamazon, littlest manky had an accident just after his 2nd birthay and smashed his two top teeth to smithereens. He had to have the stumps removed under ga.

I was when we were waiting in the dental hospital, there were 8 other kids ranging from 2 > 9 having teeth removed under GA, none had special needs, we chatted to the parents. One was related to reflux as a baby, the rest were not.

When we went to see the consultant dentist originally she was really upset for us, and said that tbh she was so used to seeing tooth decay in toddlers and young children, that it was becoming commonplace.

I left the hospital still .

Don't get me wrong, my lot have sweets and juice (occasionally), and I have crap teeth as an adult, but stil

LillianGish · 13/04/2010 22:16

Strawbezza I agree - too much pussyfooting all round! I think the programme serves to remind us all that Government campaigns that seem designed to state the bleeding obvious are very much needed in some quarters. Right - off to clean my teeth.

Hulababy · 13/04/2010 22:17

council estate doesnt = ignorance.

Totally agree.

satc2bringiton · 13/04/2010 22:23

All that tooth pulling was just awful to watch. Can't believe the parents let it get to that stage. I felt soooo guilty last year when DS1 had a filling.

Why shouldn't we judge, it's our taxes paying for this FFS

whifflegarden · 13/04/2010 22:24

SAC I've been on More4 like this --->

stressheaderic · 13/04/2010 22:32

Not often I shout at the TV, but I did tonight.

I am from Liverpool, and recognised many of the locations. Sadly, nothing reported tonight really surprised me, not even the police raid. I teach many boys just like Macaulay, and meet many mums just like his. They truly haven't got a clue about how to parent - all thye want to do is seek approval from their child.

It's a very sad, severe situation which is at least one generation from being resolved. Uncomfortable viewing.

StrawberriesAndCherries · 13/04/2010 22:32

you found it yet?

MilaMae · 13/04/2010 22:40

God I'm fuming

Sorry but those parents do know. You'd have to live on Mars not to know that sugar and bottles at bedtime cause tooth decay. Parents also know that too much food and too little exercise causes obese kids. I'm pretty sure the obesity consultant(costing the tax payer thousands) will have mentioned this once or twice.

Parents such as these just don't want to say no. Lazy, lazy parenting-totally utterly selfish. I've just sent ds 6 to bed hungry yet again as I refuse to give him crap. It's horrible and I hate saying no continuously but it's actually part of parenting, doing what is best even though it makes you very unpopular. The easiest thing in the world would be for me to serve fishfingers and chips every night.

What makes me fume even more is that my children will suffer thanks to such selfish behaviour. My ds has been suffering with his tonsills(sp?) for weeks now, can't get an ENT appointment for months and as for an op to get them out pigs might fly. Basically thanks to parenting such as this my son and many like him are going to just have to poke up with being in pain even though I do the right thing by my child.

I'm sorry but parents such as this are being treated too lightly-a trolley with fruit animals which nobody actually eats. The mother of the obese child should have been given a year then her son should be in care. Not nice for either and I'm sure being in care would cause serious problems for the future but at least he'd have one. That poor child will be lucky if he makes 18 but hey lets not upset his mum

AitchTwoZone · 13/04/2010 22:41

bullshit. plenty of people give bottles at bedtime and their kids' teeth don't fall out. i'm one of them.

MillyMollyMoo · 13/04/2010 22:46

MilaMae I said exactly the same to DH although I'm not sure care is the answer but anyone remember the case of the underweight child that SS took into care in order to make him gain weight by eating rubbish, this was as bad if you ask me, killing him with kindness.
I don't know what the answer is because it seems as if throwing money at people like those in the film and they now are harming their children by giving them too much, maybe it was better when the children had less ?

dayday · 13/04/2010 22:54

Shocking programme, my sisters child is obese and she is in total denial she thinks the food is NOT affecting her weight but she thinks that it is another underlying problem. But i have seen how she constantly feeds her, "supply and demand", the kid screams and mother supplies loads of food.

My daughter has had glue ear three times and knowone smokes in my house.

phoebebouffet · 14/04/2010 00:00

what happened in the end of this? I was watching behind on sky and it suddenly stopped, so missed the end, good job really because I was about to put a brick through the tele!

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 14/04/2010 00:47

No, the end didn't really say much. It just showed a 2 year old being taken into the operating theatre to have it's teeth removed

I'm only halfway through reading this as only just found it (saved me the effort of starting a thread on it!) - sorry if I'm repeating anyone. Anyway they're talking about it on the Wright Stuff today at 10am.

I'm not sure it was really trying to say ooh let's judge the council estate people - I think they mentioned that the hospital serves all the local estates so presumably the patients are slightly more likely to be from there?

we're strict on sugar but the programme reminded me and DH that we need to be much better at caring for the kids' teeth.

MathsMadMummy · 14/04/2010 09:39

oh and I love the idea of a judgey emoticon.

MathsMadMummy · 14/04/2010 09:59

have read the whole thread now.

I think the fruit trolley was a bit of a waste of time/money TBH. Although the aubergine penguin was the cutest thing ever!

I really don't know why the manager bloke (the one who was talking a lot throughout the show) was so diplomatic and didn't just admit how angry it makes him. He used the word 'disappointed' - there is no way I could be so tactful.

SethStarkaddersMum · 14/04/2010 10:05

what was in the bottles? just milk?

MathsMadMummy · 14/04/2010 10:16

one of the kids had milk (though the mum was trying to wean her off by mixing it with cold water) - the other boy had a bottle of juice each night.

thedollshouse · 14/04/2010 10:18

Leon's mum seriously worried me. You would not buy your child a wheelchair unless they had serious mobility issues and she failed to tell the doctor that Leon was using a wheelchair. The poor little lad didn't even ask to get in the wheelchair and yet his mother and grandmother were actively encouraging him to do so.

The portion sizes were too big but I would still be surprised if he got that fat by eating just that. I think there is far more to this story than meets the eye.
