I thought it would be high time to get the TARDIS party going, now we're on a countdown. Has anyone else seen the clip from the first episode yet? Looking like good fun. I might even be persuaded to squee.

DS2 (4.5) is listening to the wall saying "Prisoner Zero has escaped". I think he approves of the new Doctor.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/04/2010 08:43

I agree Sleepinglion - chemistry betewen girl and dr was fab. Did think she was a very capable cook for 7!

HerBeatitude · 05/04/2010 08:49

I loved it.

Except for the sexism. Unnecessary to have assistant as kissogram, and was really pissed off by the "get a girlfriend" line to the young man n the bedroom - normalising looking at porn for children. Fucking great.

Notanightowl · 05/04/2010 09:08

I too was pleasantly surprised with the new Doctor Who. We were captivated by the first episode and we are looking forward to the next.

My boys had a short dicussion about who's the best Doctor, DT in their books. I chipped in with Jon Pertwee - 1970's. There was a blank look on their faces.

Never mind, give it time and MS will grow on them.

NormaSknockers · 05/04/2010 09:13

In fairness though HerBeatitude the suggestion that the guy was looking at porn on his laptop probably went over most children's heads. My sister (12) didn't seem to register it at all.

Clarissimo · 05/04/2010 09:23

My two aged 9 and 10 didn't register it either, so didn't worry me too much really.

HerBeatitude · 05/04/2010 09:45

Yes I'm sure it probably went over most children's heads, but I don't think that makes it all right. I just felt pissed off that once again, the pornification of our culture was being promoted on the BBC's flagship family programme.

he could have been watching formula one. that would also be an indication he 'really needed to get a girlfriend'

pornification? i think not. more the antithesis.

great episode

ShadeofViolet · 05/04/2010 10:30

I loved it - I was really upset when DT left, and was a bit quick to judge his replacement, but I tried to watch last night with an open mind and I have to say I was really impressed.

Liked the food bit, except the spitting. Thought the chemistry between the two was fab.

Dont like the bow tie though!

mankyscotslass · 05/04/2010 10:41

I loved it!

But has anyone else noticed thay young Amelia's eyes were a totally different colour to older Amys?? Or did I imagine that? I mean, they could have used contacts to make them both have the same eye colour, couldn't they?

Dh reckons it's just one of those things, but nothing happens in Dr Who without a hidden meaning does it?

And I saw somewhere that the date of issue on Rory's NHS id card was 30.11.1990.....so sometthing weird , timey wimey stuff going on too? Or just a cock up???

Dh was drooling the entire episode. Makes a change from it being me over DT.

HerBeatitude · 05/04/2010 10:54

Please don't tell me to chill out about pornification, it's not something I want to chill about as I think it's a really serious issue that is demeaning to women and really, really harmful to our children.

I agree, it did occur to me that it could have been something else he was looking at, like engine parts or something equally tragic, but the get a girlfriend line plus the kissogram theme was a combination that was pretty nudge nudge wink wink IMO.

The fact that most people missed it, just shows how accepted it is - and little things like this, which we are all supposed to accept and chill out about, are all part of the normalisation process. Well I think it should be challenged.

So Amy wore a short skirt - most of the time Leela ran round in not much more than a fur bikini.

HerBeatitude · 05/04/2010 11:39

Um, hasn't it been said before that we ought to have moved on from Leela etc.

And "you're overreacting" is always the mantra of those who want to minimise sexism, racism, homophobia or any other dodginess.

ShadeofViolet · 05/04/2010 11:46

But you only want to move on because it goes against your 'sexing it up' moaning. We are trying to point out the fact that you are overreacting, you are getting pissy!

If they had shown him actually looking at porn then it would be different, but it was only implied - he could have been looking at anything. There are tons of childrens films that have implied adult themes - alot o the Disney Pixar films have it.

HerBeatitude · 05/04/2010 11:51

I'm not getting pissy.

I'm arguing my case perfectly politely and not accusing anyone of pissiness or anything else.

I disagree that the pornification of culture is something we should all just shrug about and accept.

And yes, of course lots of films have adult themes that go over the heads of kids. But adult themes and porn and the objectification of women, aren't equal partners IMO. I've no objection to jokes that go over the heads of kids. I do object to the normalisation of porn though. That's two different things IMO.

But there was nothing to indicate that he was looking at porn! An adult's mind will jump to that conclusion, because that is the way an adult's mind works. In an episode of Peppa Pig, the narrator calls Daddy Pig "quite a swinger". I had a chuckle over that, so shoot me for it. As far as the children were concerned it meant he was a cheerful guy!

Storm, teacup.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 05/04/2010 12:34

HerBeatitude - I assumed that the comment about erasing the internet history was so that there was no evidence left on the laptop of the international conference with Patrick Moore and NASA etc - it mightn't be a good idea to leave those as bookmarks on an ordinary bloke's laptop.

MotherOfBarabas · 05/04/2010 13:47

why are you all so defensive? it was most definitely a reference to porn, and while it was one that i smiled at on saturday i'm very glad that herbeatitude has pointed out that it serves to indicate how inured we are to porn use in our culture that the bbc puts references to it in the flagship family show without thinking of the wider meaning.

no idea why people can't see it, herbeatitude, it's like you have to swallow the dr who grail whole or get off the thread.

remember that steven moffat, talented writer though he is, was the man who boasted about 'shagging his way round the bbc offices like a mechanical digger'.

persephonesnape · 05/04/2010 13:51

loved it. he reminds me of a friend that I might have a bit of a secret crush on, so i'm perfectly happy for the next 12 weeks.

poor rory though - he's never quite lived up to the imaginary friend, she made him dress up as the doctor when they were kids and now the real one has come back.
