The Breakfast Club made me cry

Have just watched The Breakfast Club. I had remembered it as a real feel good teen film but it has made me cry. Judd Nelson's character is so so . It's so different looking at it from the perspective of a parent!

Weird science was the film of my teen years. We used to skive off college, go back to my mates house, drink cinzano with the curtains shut and watch it at least twice a week.

wintera · 23/10/2009 22:40

Now that sounds like a great time!! I am amazed at how cheap dvds are online these days. I have just ordered Weird Science from Play.com for £2.99! Now that is money well spent!

Lotster · 23/10/2009 22:52

"How 'bout a nice greasy pork sandwich served in a dirty ashtray? .." aaah love Weird Science!

And Breakfast Club, and Ferris Bueller's Day off, and at the time, Bugsy Malone. Let's not forget other Brat Pack faves, St. Elmo's Fire, The Outsiders and the Rob Low swoonfest, About Last Night...

"Chet. My name is Chet. And I didn't think it was a whale's dick, honey."

I follow Bill Paxton on Twitter

howzat

wintera · 23/10/2009 23:15

What about the all time great chat up line from Weird Science "First I'd like to butter your muffin!"

Snorbs · 23/10/2009 23:50

Weird Science was great, if cheesy. Pump Up the Volume was a really good film with some brilliant music ("Hey dad, happy birthday, I'm in JAIL!" ) but a weak ending I thought.

Anyone else remember Say Anything with John Cusack? I loved that film. There was also a fantastic, black comedy called Trust that I really must get round to buying one day.

Having read the OP about seeing these films from the perspective of a parent: I realised I was getting on a bit when I started to sympathise with Baby's dad in Dirty Dancing. Well, he has got a point: would you want your teenage DD, who has always been the sensible one, running round with some guy who has apparently got his girlfriend pregnant and now wants her to have an illegal abortion?

The Breakfast Club is a notch above other Brat Pack films because it has that sadness in it too. Love it. In fact I'd like to watch it now but have never got round to buying it on DVD

Georgimama · 24/10/2009 07:13

I must be a complete old fart because I always felt that like about Baby's dad. And her mum - Baby obviously thinks her mum is shallow and trivial but I think her mum has hidden reserves. The "sit down, Jake" when Johny takes her up to the stage is actually rather well done. Or am I over thinking an essentially fluffy film?

The Breakfast Club has always made me cry.

I don't dare rewatch Pump Up the Volume because I was in a very specific frame of mind (ie 15) when I first saw it, and still had an immense crush on CS, and found the film very comforting and meaningful (I agree very end is bit lame though). Now my hardened 30 year old heart would probably be embarrassed.

Sunshinemummified · 24/10/2009 11:33

Does anyone remember Soul Man too?

Just bought The Breakfast Club for a fiver in HMV to replace my ancient video. DD still says she won't watch it though - heathen child.

Sunshinemummified · 24/10/2009 16:24

She will learn

I thought this too about Judd Nelson's character. The bit when the teacher threatens to beat him up. As an adult you can see what a betrayal that would be for a child with that kind of background, the one adult who he could butt heads with but should be able to trust never to be violent with him as he is a professional behaving like that.

Some Kind of Wonderful was my next favourite the soundtrack was fab.

EccentricaGallumbats · 24/10/2009 17:41

Greetings and salutations.
am very much enjoying teenage flshbacks by remembering all these.
I love all those movies, Breakfast Club, Ferris, Heathers, Lost boys. I'm going to have to go and make some purchases.

iwascyteenagewerewolf · 24/10/2009 20:23

Got a new DVD copy of Breakfast Club this morning yay!

Snorbs, I love Say Anything. Have you ever seen Better Off Dead? Another classic 80s John Cusack flick.

gallusbesom · 24/10/2009 21:04

Has anyone mentioned 'Can't buy me love' with the gorgeous Patrick Dempsey? I recently watched the Two Coreys which is a reality tv series with Corey Haim and Corey Feldman - oh how it broke my heart to see Corey Haim in it - it fairly tainted my memory of him in that bath in The Lost Boys, singing with those shoulders and covered in bubbles!

kitkat9 · 24/10/2009 21:29

love this thread - was obsessed with many of the films mentioned, esp breakfast club, ferris and ALN

anyone remember Class? Andrew McCarthy and Rob Lowe with Jacqueline Bisset (I think) - I used to LOVE that one

was quite sexy for my young eyes

Sunshinemummified · 26/10/2009 09:21

Oh yes I do remember Class. Wasn't it a bit Mrs Robinson? And wasn't there one with Rob Lowe called Oxford Blues as well?
