I'm surprised at how many people here are defending her. What she said was effing outrageous - all very well saying it was not homophobic, just bitchy, but using somebody's alleged homosexuality to be bitchy to them IS homophobic. Dannii and Louis were clearly determined to undermine a contestant who has been highly hyped. Her tone was nasty, and she followed it up by saying, "I don't believe it" as though there's something wrong with being gay.

I don't suppose for one second Dannii doesn't have gay friends; I'm sure she doesn't think she's homophobic; but her actions last night were and she should be bloody ashamed.

AitchTwoToTangOh · 11/10/2009 19:40

who has said that it wasn't homophobic, just bitchy? is that the consensus? i really hadn't noticed. was len whatsisname being bitchy when he outed fortuna and bastian for shagging, or was he just saying something for saying something?

LilyBolero · 11/10/2009 19:45

In a way Dannii was being the LEAST homophobic - if he is bisexual, then he shouldn't be forced by what society decrees is 'acceptable' to change the lyrics to sing about a girl. But Simon knows if he sang about a boy, he would be voted off quick as a flash, because of the homophobic nature of the British public.

Someone saying 'be who you are, don't be ashamed, be proud of who you are' which is what she was basically saying, is the opposite of being homophobic.

LilyBolero · 11/10/2009 19:46

Imagine if someone was singing a song about a black person, and changed the lyrics to be about a white person...

We are too quick to label people as 'homophobic', 'racist', 'sexist' imo - and if you analyse what Dannii said, she was saying 'if you're bisexual, be proud!'

and you might have a point mrsmagnolia, were it not for the fact that he'd outed himself in the papers.

LilyBolero · 11/10/2009 20:34

What Danyl had to say to the press

Dannii didn't 'out' him at all.

LilyBolero · 11/10/2009 20:35

And tbh, giving 'such' an interview to the press is making it less about the talent and more about the sexuality.

AitchTwoToTangOh · 11/10/2009 20:41

although god love him, he probably mentioned it in passing and it became the headline.

LilyBolero · 11/10/2009 20:42

True Aitch.

Still think it is hypocritical of people to accuse Dannii of being 'homophobic' but to think he 'should' have changed the lyrics because it's 'not acceptable' for a man to sing about a man.

Hey ho.

daftpunk · 11/10/2009 20:43

simon said tonight he over-reacted and that danni wasn't being offensive..

fuss over nothing as usual...

hester · 11/10/2009 20:48

I don't think Simon is the authority on whether this was offensive; not least because he has a strong vested interest in defending the X Factor brand.

You can tell me it's a fuss over nothing, daftpunk, but as someone who has experienced (and learned to shrug off) a fair bit of homophobia in my time, I found it offensive. it is absolutely right that she apologised.

daftpunk · 11/10/2009 20:58

but hester....she was actually sticking up for gay/bi-sexual people...

i'm sorry you have experienced homophobia....but you're not an authority on whether this was offensive or not either....that's between danni and danyl

Oblomov · 11/10/2009 21:00

so she apologised tonight. oh thats allright then !!

daftpunk · 11/10/2009 21:01

yes it is alright....what do you fucking want.....her shot..?

hester · 11/10/2009 21:07

She wasn't sticking up for anybody; she was having a dig. If she did intend it non-maliciously (and I certainly don't think she intended it to come over as badly as it did; she wouldn't want to alienate her fanbase) she still has to take responsibility for how it came out.

I'm not setting myself up as an authority on anything, and I clearly don't know what was going on in her head, but it is just not true that this is just between dannii and danyl. Every gay person is affected by public incidents of homophobia, and most gay people will have had experience of having 'jokes' made about their sexuality in order to undermine them (and then being told by heterosexuals that they shouldn't be offended).

I'm going to stop ranting now. I don't know why this one has got me so irate - it's only bloody X Factor - I think I'm just so fed up with flip little 'funny' comments of this kind. They're not funny and they do cause real harm.

Over and out.

AitchTwoToTangOh · 11/10/2009 21:15

imo the response has caused more harm than the comment itself. had simon not asked her to repeat it, it would have been a big nothing and people would have been more concerned by louis and cheryl's comments to the effect that he was a big-headed cock. (or something like that).

LilyBolero · 11/10/2009 21:15

Hester - if someone was singing a song and changed the lyrics from 'black' to 'white' to avoid singing about a mixed-race relationship, and someone said 'why change the lyrics?' who would be being racist?

tiredsville · 11/10/2009 21:36

yes I know I'm shallow, but the nose!

daftpunk · 11/10/2009 21:38

hester....think you're being way too paranoid....

are you always this impossible to please....?

KiwiKat · 11/10/2009 21:38

She was just being a mean girl, and it's bitten her in the arse. She's lost a lot of credibility with the public over this, which is a shame, as she had gained a lot of public affection. (And her hair is still looking terrific, in a very shallow aside.)

daftpunk · 11/10/2009 21:40

ummm...bet you're a stunner tiredsville

tiredsville · 11/10/2009 21:52

Coincidentally DP I am, well done you perceptive thing you grin
