I have to say I was and still am unsure about what I think of them giving Hollie a second go. Yes she is only a child and I really felt for her when she slipped up and wanted to give her a big hug, but at the end f the day, this is a competition and they haven't let every act that's been a bit crap or that have slipped up a second chance. Is it reasonable because she is so young? Should the lo's be given special treatment over the adults? Or do we need to accept that it is a competition and if 1 gets to do it again, they all should? Maybe there should be an age limit on these things. I'm not sure I'd allow my 10yo (I don't have one yet but....) to enter purely for the rejection if they aren't quite good enough.
But, there was also no one else to vote for really. With the exception of Aiden, all acts were crap really, this is how they fix it and can pretty much guarentee their winner.
Remember the first Pop Idol when Will Young won? Simon hated him and this show, the final was strictly thed public vote, so the judges lost the control a bit which is why I think they do the decider on the next 2 popular ones. That's a massive guarentee that the acts they want to go through, will go through isn't it? They know the public will mostly vote for the good acts, but what if for some reason, one that isn' so great gets put through, the judges can still trample it. Is a bit sad and manipulative to the general public IMO which is why I don't vote on these things.

If those tears were staged, it means the whole incident was staged. But that would be a stupid thing to do, since it was only Simon Cowell's intervention that got her a second chance. Of course it wasn't staged. And I don't know how people know so much about her mother, who only acted tonight as I would have acted. I also would have wanted a second chance for my dd to get out of the whole thing without too much emotional damage. If Hollie had been pulled out after the disastrous first go, it might have affected her for years. I've seen no signs of a "pushy mother". I think it was Hollie who pestered her parents to let her enter, without realizing what an overwhelming thing it would be. I suggest people should give both mother and daughter a break.

oodlesofpoodles · 30/05/2009 07:49

I think it was good to let her have a second go. its like getting straight back on a horse when you have fallen off. An adult would have got over it reasonably ok compared with a child. It was a bad decission to make her go through it again tonight.

MerryPonymum · 30/05/2009 08:18

Considering that children of this age are allowed to enter at all (a separate issue) I saw only an act of kindness when she was given a chance to sing again. This was not the tantrum of a spoilt little madam, just the very normal reaction of a little girl who made a mistake, faltered, and became distressed and overwhelmed.

Some comments on this thread have been unbelievably harsh on her, I think.

In the circumstances, I think the least worst way forward was to let her start again - I think it was likely a kindly and human impulse from the judges, I'm sure they would much have preferred she vanished never to be seen again (especially since they must have realised the probability was high of her finishing in vote-off position and making it all awkward, as indeed she did.)

I didn't mind them giving her the place in the end, given the choice - the singer in the other runners'-up spot was dire tonight - in fact it's been a strikingly talentless year on the whole, with the obvious exceptions - but I think if I were her mother I might gently suggest she finish on the high note of last night's applause and cheers and kind words and pull her out of the final, with a face-saving 'you can have another go next year if you want to, when your voice is even stronger' or similar. Relief all round if she did (don't suppose she will, though.)

Tambajam · 30/05/2009 08:33

Completely agree with merry pony. I don't think it was a pretence. I think that if she pulled out of the final that would be by far the kindest thing.

Ninkynork · 30/05/2009 11:30

Well I watched it again and she definitely wasn't miming. Sorry everyone, I'm like a dog with a bone after a few bottles glasses

conniedescending · 30/05/2009 11:45

hmmm,

Not sure if I would have let my dd sing again. However, seeing as she did it the 2nd time around fair enough - but I think she should have been disqualified from the vote...clearly can't cope with the pressure.

I actually think the parents should have suggested this to the producers and stepped in but in the absence of common sense the production team should have stepped in and said its the end of the road.

Going to be awful viewing tonight.

RoxyNotFoxy · 30/05/2009 13:00

I recorded the show last night and I just watched the Hollie segments again. I've got no criticism of anyone. Hollie's mum behaved perfectly, and Simon was right to get her a second go, even if it was against the rules. If things had been left the way they were, she might never have been able to perform again in public. And she'd have been persecuted and made fun of at school. What was done was the right thing to do. As for her performance, it wasn't great, compared to her audition (which was very good), but it was still better than Greg (who was a lot worse than his audition). And he was the best of the rest, according to the public. So, all in all, I don't think anyone can say they wuz robbed. She won't win tonight, but I just hope she holds up, and gets out of it all intact. Lovely little girl.

FabulousBakerGirl · 30/05/2009 17:41

I read in the paper today that her mother wants her to have a record deal as this is her last chance.

Her mum behaved perfectly??

OP posts:
CrushWithEyeliner · 30/05/2009 18:51

First thing the Mum did when she got up was turn very sternly to the producers and shout "can she go again?".

Her Mother is awful. She is pushing her. The crying was really disturbing. I think she is under a lot of pressure form her Mother to do this. Really shitty behaviour from a parent imo.

ilovesprouts · 30/05/2009 18:53
