I was rooting for the oaf too

Denise was brilliant, the salsa did need a sauce though. I have to say that in my opinion it is a fact that she will have to juggle more than the others, I just think it would have been too pc if they hadn't of even mentioned it to her. I suppose the issue is would they have asked if she had been a man?

Thought that Glen was just too cocky and I just can't believe that he hadn't made it before, i mean if you were going on national television to make a meal to become masterchef, surely you would even attempt to make it once, i'd have made it a hundred times.

The ingredient test was just too easy.

Pendulum · 08/01/2009 21:53

carrots I agree about Glen, I don't believe for a minute that he hadn't practised those dishes.

I also think you're spot on with your question- would they have asked the question if she was a man. I really don't think that people think of a man "juggling" kids and a career- do you? For all we know she is married to a SAHD. My view is, she has decided she can do it, it's nobody"s business to question that. Reminds me of Sralan's (equally unaceeptable) line of questioning on the Apprentice: it casts aspersions on her commitment to the job.

carrotsandpeasifyouplease · 08/01/2009 21:58

on reflection in answer to my own question, of course they wouldn't have asked a man as they would have assumed that his wife would be looking after them, its got me a bit annoyed now too.

foxinsocks · 08/01/2009 22:02

they would never have asked a man those questions

even if his wife was working, they still wouldn't

MyEye · 08/01/2009 22:12

I do think the sight of John Torode opening his mouth to receive a forkful of food is one of the horridest things you'll ever see on television. (lol at flickering lizard tongue.)

And he has those spooky dead eyes... Jonathan Rhys Meyers has 'em too. Nothing behind them. Yerk.

thumbwitch · 09/01/2009 01:01

no, I'm glad that the cocky galoot got kicked out - teach him to be so cocky in the future! Anyway, Denise's food was better. But you're all right - they shouldn't have asked her those questions in any place other than the bit where the contestants have to demonstrate their commitment to wanting to win. Even there, it would have been a bit but at least a bit more relevant.

MyEye - it's a toss up which is worse, John's or Greg's, I don't see why they have to do close-ups of them shovelling massive forkfuls of food into their gobs - nasty.

chopchopbusybusy · 09/01/2009 11:17

I don't think the questioning of Denise was so bad. There was a single Dad on the series last year and the fact he was a single Dad was mentioned a lot.

Fimbo · 09/01/2009 11:45

When it's a pudding (like Dennice's) Gregg always shovels the biggest mouthful he can get in.

And he has still got his zit or whatever it is...... yuck

Pendulum · 09/01/2009 11:49

Is Denise a single parent?

chopchopbusybusy · 09/01/2009 12:42

I don't know if she is a single parent or not. My point is that it is quite normal on the show for them to discuss how Masterchef will fit around the contestants lives. I seem to remember a lot was made last year of how lawyer James was coping with his busy work schedule and his wife and children and Masterchef.

georgiemum · 09/01/2009 13:01

Don't know if Denise is a single parent or not but I would kill for a piece of her desert. It looked so yummy.

carrotsandpeasifyouplease · 09/01/2009 13:50

well while we were watching it my DH commented on the fact that they were asking her and he said something which included " ..and being a single mum," I said we don't know that but he assumed she was because they were asking her about it so much, if she is then it might explain it more.

MaryAnnSingleton · 09/01/2009 14:42

actually the Irish bloke last year did make a big too-do about being a single parent

OP posts:
elliott · 09/01/2009 14:46

oh god yes - 'I'm doing this for the kids' bleuch! Why do people say that to justify what is blatantly following their own dream? (nothing wrong with that, but really, kids don't give a stuff what their parents do when they are away from them!

MaryAnnSingleton · 09/01/2009 15:45

you're right there elliot

I was quite sad that Mitra went out, she was cute. I wonder if Lizardy John has got over his infatuation with Emily (posh lispy gril from the last series) yet?

puffling · 09/01/2009 23:45

At least they've stopped saying 'plate/s of food.' It got ridiculous last series.
I miss Loyd Grossman. It all seemed more genteel, yet rigorous in those days.

merryberry · 12/01/2009 11:08

well my tellyvisual cup runneth over, MC again this week and CSI new series starts tomorrow. Yum.

thumbwitch · 12/01/2009 23:29

nobody else seems that interested - mind you, tonight's was very uncontroversial.
DH score 2/3, final one wrong
me score 2/3, final one right.
not that I'm competitive or anything.
Oh and we are now starting to keep a track of who wins when they disagree over who should go through - tonight it was JT who won.

carrotsandpeasifyouplease · 13/01/2009 08:45

it was quite boring tonight but the scientist lady really annoyed me for some reason. I think the best won but god i think he dressed and styled himself like a teenager and he was in his late twenties (maybe i'm starting to lose touch).
I could have eaten his starter twice over it looked gorgeous.

BecauseImWorthIt · 13/01/2009 08:57

I'm a recent convert to this show - used to hate the LG version of it.

Thought that he would get through last night as he is much more inventive with his cooking, but mussels with pork sounded totally bleurgh!

elliott · 13/01/2009 09:02

Its starting to get very predictable who's going to triumph after the staged 'dilemma' between John and Greg - I mean last night was soooo obvious which choice they were going to make, and quite clear that whoever had to stick up for science gal was making it up....
They should start saying - 'yup, we've got a clear winner here' - THAT woudl ring the changes!

MaryAnnSingleton · 13/01/2009 09:13

yep, it is very formulaic, the Gregg and John 'arguments' etc ( and sadly we too keep a check on who wins JT or Gregg !)but part of the ritual that is MC. I took against the pink t shirt bloke for his clothes but his food looked very beautiful.

DaDaDa · 13/01/2009 14:12

Definitely the most one-sided heat so far. Dull.

Wogan is very funny about Masterchef. "So who do we put through, Gregg? Well I'm a chef and you're a... grocer. Hmmmmmmmmmm?"

Torode, for old times sake.
