Jonathan Creek

Love Jonathan Creek so was excited about its return. Thought it was a very good comeback with some very clever bits . . . . BUT . . . It was a bit too dark maybe? Not much humour in it like there normally is. More like an ep of Wire in the Blood or something like that. Liked Sheridan Smith as the new sidekick though.

i really enjoyed this, but what an elabrate(sp) plot with the bath

i thought room might not be where it was, as they went through a hidden bookcase to get to it in the beginning

and why was the gardener kissing friend who dissaperred if he was shagging/in love with the assiatant (whose throat got slit)
i also recognized sheriden, but as never watceh 2 pints or other things names, dont know why i do

hope more jc will come soon

TheArmadillo · 02/01/2009 15:21

The plot was overconvoluted and pretty crap imo.

Why did the girl and handyman get married in secret? Why didn't she just tell the magician guy it was over and leave? Also they had only realised a few days before apparently that they were serious - surely they wouldn't have got a marriage licence in that time. It just seems completely ridiculous.

The actual trick with the bath was clever but didn't seem to fit in - Why did Mina (or whatever her name was) have a bath in something that was filthy? SUrely she would wait 1/2 hr till the guy let her out rather than bathe in something that hadn't been cleaned in decades.

The woman saving hte picture and not the old man was given little further explanation and seem to be a bit tacked on.

And I agree that surely if the girl's throat was slashed why not more blood? And where was her body in the end? And the handyman seemed a bit 'oh well never mind' over the death of someone he had only been married to for what, a couple of days?

Seemed like they invented a good trick (the bath) and tacked on a plot (full of holes) around it. Oh and why wasn't the house swarming with police by the end? They just uncovered a tank with several dead bodies in - one recent, surely they called htem?

Oh and how did JC's girlfriend meet guy in america? Did she know him before? How did she track him down? That seemed pretty weird and not exactly believable.

PuppyDrunky · 02/01/2009 15:25

As someone who is terrified of spiders, the LAST thing I would do when seeing lots of spiders in a room is take my clothes off and have a bath (where there could be more spiders).

I was all a bit actually. Big tank of bodies undiscovered for all those years. What about leaks? And smells? And what was all that about the birds flying into windows? And why the hell were Sheridan's skirts so short?

pooka · 02/01/2009 15:26

Mena in the bath - who would really have a bath with no access to a towel, soap and dry clothes to get into afterwards? Very unlikely IMO.

Fimbo · 02/01/2009 15:28

Mina's tights were ripped at the crotch. They stated that it looked as if she had been attacked by something - not just her ripping them in her frenzy to get in the bath after the dead flies landing on her.

IotasCat · 02/01/2009 15:28

Who built the tank and why and who were all the bodies/skeletons?

Fimbo · 02/01/2009 15:30

I think the relation from years ago built the tank, the skeletons/bodies were all the people who had gone missing from the room over the years.

IotasCat · 02/01/2009 15:35

Sorry I only saw the end of it. But didn't anybody notice that the people who stayed in the room
disappeared? And what was the motivation for such a hugely complicated/ expensive way to off people?

MadamAntlers · 02/01/2009 15:36

Agree with Aitch. The plot was a bit holey, but I enjoyed it all washing over me.

IotasCat · 02/01/2009 15:37

Whats wrong with doing a bit of traditional serial killing with an axe in the park?

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/01/2009 15:38

the tank and bath were designed years ago byt rhe ladys father who wanted to get rid of that man, so he persuaded him to stay in that room, knowing that if he had sticky stuff dropped on himduring the night, then he would bath

then everythime someone stayed, got dripped on/bugs etc, they would have a bath and die

if there was no towel,i wouldnt have a bath

and yes i would have called in the police if my friend dissapeered

TheArmadillo · 02/01/2009 15:38

yeah the room was supposed to be haunted and anyone who spent the night in there disappeared and was never found again - was put down to evil spirits.

Wouldn't it have been easiest to tell if the attic really was in the attic if they had climbed up through the outside and looked through the windows? Apparently handyman could get up there to clean away the birds, but had never happened to look through window?

PuppyDrunky · 02/01/2009 15:38

IC - yes everyone noticed the people going missing over the years - they said it was about 12 or so that had just disappeared. But they were all into magic and stuff and thought it was something supernatural going on. I do think I would have called the police a lot earlier.

Also Sheridan was a bit... whatever... about the disappearnce/death of her mate wasn't she? A bit of concern would have been nice.

IotasCat · 02/01/2009 15:42

Thanks for the explanations. Glad I didnt spend two hours of my life on it

TheArmadillo · 02/01/2009 15:47

bah Sherlock Holmes would have worked it out in time to be home for his dinner.

I am not impressed wiht mr jonathan not as bright as he purports to be creek.

KayHarker · 02/01/2009 16:10

They obviously weren't very good friends.

You couldn't see through the window, and anyway, if the handyman even had a ladder that big (ooer, missus) then when he got up that far, he would have discovered the whole tower was CGI anyway and fallen into thin air.

I have been spending far too much time today wondering about how nasty smells could have been prevented, and supposed it was because it airtight, but then wondered where all the extra bathwater went, and considered that there was an overflow system, but that wouldn't be airtight, would it?

And then I remembered that the tank doesn't really exist, is never going to really exist for obvious reasons, and that there's absolutely no rational way to come to a realistic conclusion about all this, and then I went mad.

Flamespar · 02/01/2009 16:53

pmsl @ him falling through the cgi tower

MrsKrabappel · 02/01/2009 16:59

I loved it.

beaniebaby25 · 02/01/2009 18:03

i wanted to know how sheridan smith's character managed to text jonathan exactly where she was from inside a box - in a warehouse that she'd previously described as 'somewhere in east london'. and she'd been hiding in the back of the truck! she wouldn't have a clue where she was!?

other than that, and lots of other holes (yes like why did no one call the police after mena went missing? why hadn't the architectural plans been consulted after the previous people went missing, and so the room located and mystery solved? and why was sheridan not bothered that her friend had died, and just went out for dinner at the end? she didnt even look upset that her bloke left her. and how was all the extra bath water prevented from bursting out of the bricks somwehere?) anyway, apart from that, it was entertaining. and i do fancy like jonathan creek

DisastrousNuclearAccident · 02/01/2009 18:07

Another thing that nI don't get is that JC established that there was some sort of mechanism causing the release of flies from teh canopy the first time he was in the bedroom.

If that was you that had discovered that would you not have dismantled the bed/mattress and canopy to find that mechanism???

moonshine · 02/01/2009 18:18

And how did Jonathan manage to press the mattress lightly several times and each time loads of flies fell on him, but sleeping on it all night did not result in any more in the bed?

And everyone was so emotionless at the loss of friends/lovers/wives.

But despite the Grand Crayon-sized holes in the script still enjoyed it (although isn't Alan Davies a miserable git IRL - allegedly).

But surely we would know by now if Sheridan was pregnant as this would have been filmed several months ago.

theinsider · 02/01/2009 19:44

I went to bed when she jumped in the back of the truck on the way to the warehouse in East London. (DH had fallen asleep and I was scared to watch it on my own ) So I've been trawling for an explanation of what happened, but I've got some questions:

If the room was in a different place (is this right) why, and why would no one notice?

What actually happened to people, nasty stuff fell on them (due to pressure on the mattress?) so they had a bath... then what happened to them? And where did they go?

Was it all set up by the original nazi chap to kill the first guy as JC thought when I went to bed? Was that the only point? Was any of "today's" characters aware? What about the mad mother?

And clearly Elodie met a sticky end - why, how, who, does it matter? When I went to bed she had just not been released by a kidnapper who picked up the cash.

And was there anything I need to know eg about JC's girlfriend character?

Sorry for all the questions but I need to know the rational explanation so I'm not scared of ghosties tonight

Flamespar · 02/01/2009 20:04

If the room was in a different place (is this right) why, and why would no one notice?

See answer below about the bath...

What actually happened to people, nasty stuff fell on them (due to pressure on the mattress?) so they had a bath... then what happened to them? And where did they go?

The pressure of bath + water + person made the bath sort of tip end up and dump them in a huge water tank, where it then closed up again and left them to drown. The attic had to be elsewhere to give enough space for the water tank etc. Why no-one noticed? Official line - spiral staircase disorients. Actual line - they is morons.

Was it all set up by the original nazi chap to kill the first guy as JC thought when I went to bed? Was that the only point? Was any of "today's" characters aware? What about the mad mother?

Yup, was him, the others were just accidents. None of them aware, the mad mother rescued painting instead of man in fire... no real point to that either.

And clearly Elodie met a sticky end - why, how, who, does it matter? When I went to bed she had just not been released by a kidnapper who picked up the cash.

Why - she was leaving him for the roadie, throat slit, magician, nope - was a pointless side story.

And was there anything I need to know eg about JC's girlfriend character?

Not really - she sodded off with the guy on the phone in America

Now can someone tell me... what happened with Carla to make her announce he was dead???

theinsider · 02/01/2009 20:11

Thank you so much flamespar. And armed with that I'm off to read the thread again.

DisastrousNuclearAccident · 02/01/2009 21:24

but nobody has discussed the random bee hive woman.....I guess that was because it was another unnecessary random storyline
