Jonathan Creek

Love Jonathan Creek so was excited about its return. Thought it was a very good comeback with some very clever bits . . . . BUT . . . It was a bit too dark maybe? Not much humour in it like there normally is. More like an ep of Wire in the Blood or something like that. Liked Sheridan Smith as the new sidekick though.

I thought it was good - but the newspaper bit was a bit tenuous. Bath was fantastic though
I agree - where were the police? Also, would you have got into that manky bed?? urgh

StealthPo09IsHere · 02/01/2009 21:35

Who was the other guy? not the old woman's son but the other one?

Hey, I got felix dies - are you impressed? Didn't link it to the hitler thing though!

DisastrousNuclearAccident · 02/01/2009 21:58

what does dies mean (other that to die...what is it latin for...I got that it was latin but not what it meant).

bran · 02/01/2009 22:44

Felix Dies means happy day I think, possibly celebratory day (I was always a bit rubbish at Latin).

I was a bit pissed off with this, and I had been really looking forward to it. Perhaps I was younger and less critical for the previous episodes of JC but I don't remember such clunky plots and lack of humour. It was much too long, and the sub-plots were dire. Why did either of them need a love interest? It didn't add anything to either the plot or the characterisation.

I agree with everyone who found Sheridan Smith's wardrobe a bit odd. She was a bit like a tarty bag lady, all boobs and legs with raggy layers of clothing flapping around her midriff. And what was going on with her hair? It looked as though she had galloping split ends.

I also agree that nobody seemed even slightly tearful or distraught at their loved one's death.

Was that a one off or will there be a series? It might be better with a series as there can be a bit of character development then.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/01/2009 12:46

think it was a one off, but < lookshopeful>i would like more

it was a bit cheesey but prob the most enjoyed thing i watched over xmas, as lets face it, xmas tv was crap this year!!

dont want to read this thread yet as i have recorded it. Would it be remotely suitable for my mature 10 year old? If not why not (scary, bad language, violence, sex?). Not a regular viewer, saw the odd episode when it was on, thought it may be something we could watch together?

bran · 03/01/2009 16:22

I don't think it would be great for a 10 year old. There are lots of shots of dead and decomposing bodies and there is also as scene where a person has obviously been tortured and a close up of a throat being cut. I think this one is much darker than the other episodes used to be. However, I only have a 4 year old so have no real idea of what would be suitable for a 10 year old.

DisastrousNuclearAccident · 03/01/2009 16:24

No bad language as far as I recall
No sex (although some mild inferences of sex - i.e. woman trying to seduce bloke on a bed and JC going getting out of bed with another woman as far as I recall)
No hard violence....
It is a bit scarey for about 30sec towards the end with the big reveal (which I obviously can't reveal if you haven't watched it.

I would say it is probably OK for a mature 10yo but not much younger.

DisastrousNuclearAccident · 03/01/2009 16:25

I disagree about throat being cut....it wasn't a particular close up...

Ivykaty44 · 03/01/2009 16:32

The bath never had any water in it when someone had dissapeared from the room.

yet when the bath was filled with water and a person got into the bath the bath tipped them into a water tank underneith - yet the bath never had water in it when it came back up ? The bath was always empty of water

  • it would have water in it otherwise there would be a gap between the top of the water tank and the level of the water.

Even if the water was taken from the water tank below - which by now would be very dirty - it wouldn't work unless there was water left in the bath each time.

KayHarker · 03/01/2009 16:34

Unless there was also a mechanism which pulled the plug out when it tipped back up again...

Ivykaty44 · 03/01/2009 16:41

if the plug was on a mechanism yes the bath could empty back into the tank but that would mean the plug was always in the bath - and i am sure it wasn't when it was shown???

Sure the plug hole was empty...

sis · 03/01/2009 16:44

lots of references to 3D porn too so not what I would consider suitable for a 10 year old!

DisastrousNuclearAccident · 03/01/2009 16:51

Oh yes I had forgotten about teh 3D porn (thus illustrating it's relevance!).

In that case I revoke my suggestion that it would be suitable.

foxinsocks · 03/01/2009 16:52

lol ivy and kay

having rethought it, yes, I reckon the 3D porn storyline totally unnecessary. Bet they do edit that bit out for foreign consumption.

re the plug, I think the bath sloped down, the person fell out, the plug bit was connected to the bit around the bath so when it sloped, the plug came out and once the bath came back up, any remainding water went down the plughole. We saw it doing that at one point I think.

it could have done with some sex I reckon (ok, not really but it needed some spicing up) or some more subtle humour like of old

Ivykaty44 · 03/01/2009 16:52

It is deemed by the bbc as not suitable for under 16 - it is a bit nightmare prevoking.

1.32 is the bit in the bath on iplayer - the plug is not in the bath at the end of the shot - as the bath comes away from the plug on a chain and so therefore the water can drain out once the bath is back in position and the person drowned.

But the water has gone far to quickly - baths with that size plug hole don't drain that quickly....??

StealthPo09IsHere · 03/01/2009 20:51

There was one particular scene (where the main mystery was solved and they were rescuing her) that was terrifying IMO

MaHumbug · 03/01/2009 20:59

they don't have people dying in it normally do they?

I was quite shocked her friend was dead in the end.

StealthPo09IsHere · 03/01/2009 21:05

I think some do - but I did think this was quite graphic.

StealthPo09IsHere · 03/01/2009 21:05

Especially if you have certain fears!

Flamespar · 04/01/2009 10:52

I was surprised at the death count too. It is normally more mysteries than murders

pointydog · 04/01/2009 11:00

I feel abit bad about this. We let the dds stay up to watch it, thinking it was a gentle family drama. Dd2 (10) had terrible nightmares

pointydog · 04/01/2009 11:01

We got past the porn but the dead bodies was the killer

AnneOfAvonlea · 04/01/2009 12:39

Aw pointydog. Your poor DD.

I found this much more gruesome than any of the others. And a lot less funny.

UnquietDad · 04/01/2009 12:44

An awful lot of holes! The texting from the trunk to get Jonathan to come to a random East End warehouse, the seemingly tacked-on thing about the video in the park, how on earth the tank was kept topped-up and leak-free...

I think there were three separate good mysteries in there trying to get out. He's done a couple of specials before with two mysteries combined (the Satan's Chimney one with Mary Tamm and one other) but this had too much going on.
