Hello again!!

OP posts:
LobstersLass · 13/12/2008 23:28

The problem isn't really the maths.
The problem was Tess's script saying "vote to save your favourite from the dance off", when there was no way Tom could be saved. I think that was the real problem.

If her script hadn't said that, then I don't think they'd have put all 3 of them through.

Turniphead1 · 13/12/2008 23:29

My DH had to explain to me as set out by Expo. Think there will be a big rap on knuckles at the Beeb tomorrow. This must have been a spur of the moment decision, rather than a previously agreed way to get 3 back into the Final as they wanted originally.

HAD I voted I think I would still have a case for getting my money back - because of course, being a Strictly purist I vote/assess on the basis of the dances that evening (as opposed to BB, I'm a Sleb etc that are crap popularity contests. So my vote in the semis might not be the same as my vote in the final.

I think Lisa will be the biggest loser in this.

Turniphead1 · 13/12/2008 23:32

Apologies if this has been posted. But here is the Beebs official statement;

"

Due to the unprecented outcome of the judges vote (there was an tie between the top two couples both scoring the maximum points available - 3 points the audience vote could not have saved one of our couples from the dance off.

The vote opened just before the programme went off air, we took the decision that all the votes cast tonight should stand and be carried through to next weeks final.

So the audience has had the usual chance to vote on the performances of all our semi-finalists. All the votes cast tonight will be rolled over.

Tonight's vote has been independently verified."

Errr "unprecedented outcome". Now I know some of these TV folk aren't too bright - but two couples scoring the same isn't exactly "unprecendented" eh.

lunamoon2 · 13/12/2008 23:36

I am loving Vincent at the moment. I really felt for him when Len slated his smooth saying there wasn't enough foxtrot in it. He looked like he was about to cry if it had cost Rachel a place in the final. Thought their AT was fantastic, technically almost perfect! GO Vincent go!!!!
And where was Brian tonight???
Had to make do with my old fave Matthew in the professional dance.
What will we do after next week

circlesquare · 13/12/2008 23:42

Am pondering this rollover vote. I know that someone on here had already worked out by the end of the first show that there was no point voting for Tom, even though he was her favourite, so headed off to vote for someone else instead. Will there not be complaints from people who did that but would have voted for him if they'd known it would carry through to the final?

expo · 13/12/2008 23:45

I agree Turniphead. Not exactly unprecedented. I am really surprised they didn't work through this scenario in advance seeing as having 3 couple in the semis was slightly dodgy anyway with voting (as explained earlier).

Then as soon as it happened they could have altered the script with a backup they would have had ready in advance, so Tess said - the vote tonight is between Lisa and Rachel to see who will join Tom in the dance off.

I work in a business where we are always scenario planning like this.

expo · 13/12/2008 23:49

Yes, bless Vincent. How hard must it be for him to choreograph the first dance for Rachel's wedding. He must be gutted...!

expo · 13/12/2008 23:53

Oh it's now a mess! How will Tom now feel if he wins. Probably a bit crap knowing what a nice bloke he seems.

bran · 13/12/2008 23:55

Oooh, expo, there's a business in forcasting how badly things can go wrong? I am the queen of pessimists and am always thinking up contingency plans for things. My DH is the opposite and is always caught by surprise when things go wrong, and then says things like "well, nobody could have forseen that". Which is infuriating because I usually have forseen it but have been ignored for being a wet blanket.

expo · 14/12/2008 00:00

I work in marketing and we are always scenario planning outcomes - bad and good. And we have to look at all possibilities!!! I am really surprised the BBC didn't do this given the high profile this show has coupled with the whole phone vote thing recently.

bran · 14/12/2008 00:17

Oh marketing (I've lost interest as there is just too much work and not enough doom and gloom). I've always thought it would be fab to have a job in disaster planning and management, you know, how to move people/food/medical supplies so as to minimise death and chaos in the event of a meteor strike/alien invasion/super volcano/outbreak of smallpox. I feel that my Cassandra-like abilities have been largely untapped by a career as a statistician for a market research company.

extremelychocolateymilkroll · 14/12/2008 00:19

Yes Bran, Risk Management is your ideal career. My SIL works in RM and can think of every possible negative scenario ever.

AndATigerschickInAPearTree · 14/12/2008 07:58

Well, I stand corrected. According to that statement from the Beeb, it was a snap decision.

I totally agree that they should have foreseen the situation - we've had a tie for first place once already this serise! - and had the contingency plan of not opening Tom's (or whoever was in 3rd) phone line already in place.

It has been very badly handled but, overall, I'm pleased that there are 3 couples in the final. They need to re-think things so that this doesn't happen again next year ...

AndATigerschickInAPearTree · 14/12/2008 08:33

Just to go back to the show itself - before it all went ape - I usually love the pro dances ...but last night ... why get a group of amazing dancers, doing a famous routine, and then try and upstage it with the pro dancers? I wasn't watching the 3 couples at the front, I was looking at the back of the stage (corner of the screen) to see the act that had come on to perform. What an odd choice!

Oovavu · 14/12/2008 08:38

It was defo unplanned - dh counted about 15 christmas trailers after SCD as they desperately tried to fill in some time!

There is no way the beeb would have planned this in advnace after JS left - with the way things are for the bbc they would have risked it being leaked and the whole coporation being torched by daily mail readers (metaphorically and literally I expect).

A final with 3 in is great. And it's all done on lublic vote isn;t it, so Rachel or LIsa will be first out, hopefully Rachel as I don't think I've disliked a contestent so much since Gabby Yorath. There is just no personality there at all. She has shark eyes

Oovavu · 14/12/2008 08:39

and OMG what was that show dance all about??!! It was horrendous. I hope none of them try any of that nonsense next week

Bomper · 14/12/2008 08:40

Also, don't know if it is just me, but I don't like Show Dances. Although they are extremely clever, they are not what I would class as a dance, more like acrobatics, like something you would see in a circus. I know they are spectacular but I am afraid I am a bit of a Len and would like to see some actual dance steps!!

Bomper · 14/12/2008 08:41

Tee hee hee, not just me then!!

expo · 14/12/2008 08:51

The other thing I didn't think about last night bran, was that they should have given the top two only 2 points each and then it would have all been OK. Again, something that could easily have been worked through by the BBC. The Tom could have got off the dance off by having 4 points through having the largest public vote. Now THAT would have been the neatest solution surely.

Blimey, it makes me confident that I am actually alright at my job compared to some people at the BBC. I bet there is going to be ructions there next week!

And why would anyone vote based on Rachel's personality? She is by far the best dancer. I cannot understand how Lisa got a 10 for her Argentinian Tango from Len and Rachel got a 9 from Craig. Rachel's tango was far more advanced than Lisa's. OK she may not have a stunning personality but she is a stunning dancer.

squeaver · 14/12/2008 09:03

Yes show dance was ridiculous.

thenewme · 14/12/2008 09:18

i assumed both shows were on last night because it is the BBC personality of the year tonight.

AndATigerschickInAPearTree · 14/12/2008 09:33

I agree, thenewme.

The show dance was very impressive but was not a 'dance' by my thinking.

Expo - I guess they didn't do that because that would be seen as blatantly penalising the women ... Can't see Brendan taking that lying down ...

mm22bys · 14/12/2008 09:53

I thought the show "dance" was horrendous too, they ARE hugely talented, dedicated, all the rest of it, but dancing? Not in my book!

During the show last night (before they made their announcement) I said to DH that with Tom knowing he would be in the dance-off, he was actually at a distinct advantage to the other too, he would have had much longer to mentally prepare.

It is possible to that if they had had the dance-off, regardless of who he would have been against, that Lisa or Rachel may have messed up. Not probable though....., and if the judges did what they are supposed to do and dance for who they think is the best dancer just in the dance-off, Tom could have got through - like Lisa vs Austen (although she was better all through Sat night...)

As an asie, I used to work in Disaster Recovery (well, till it became Business Continuity Planning!)

carrotsandpeasifyouplease · 14/12/2008 10:10

also agree about the showdance it was very wow but more gymnastics rather than dance.

I just laughed when I saw the pro-dancers at the back of the chicago dance, why why why?

I thought V&R's tango was very flat compared to what I was expecting and Lisa was very good. I don't even bother watching Tom anymore.

bran · 14/12/2008 10:14

I don't think it would have been right to give the joint first 2 points each either, as that isn't standard scoring. It would have had to have been agreed beforehand and done that way for other tied positions in the series.

I definitely think the best thing to do next year is to start with one more than they need and, if necessary, have a double knockout one week towards the end. The past couple of series they have been starting with more celebs anyway which firstly means that the series is probably slightly too long and secondly increases the probability that one of the celebs will get injured or have a family crisis and have to drop out.
