anyone else watch it? thought it was quite good though a bit long. Also wish they had done more explaining for us unmusical types. Bradley Walsh makes me want to heave, so does Katie dereham - surely no-one can be that 'sweet' for real?!

OP posts:
AlBongo · 02/09/2008 21:57

I don't think we have to worry about Simone's technique.

nell12 · 02/09/2008 21:58

Yay Goldie!

theSuburbanDryad · 02/09/2008 21:58

Fucking bollocks.

Jane gets right on my wick.

squeaver · 02/09/2008 22:00

I so wanted it be Alex, Sue and Goldie next week.

At least Little Miss Perfect is gone.

theSuburbanDryad · 02/09/2008 22:00

Alex was loads better than JA.

Grr.

AlBongo · 02/09/2008 22:04

That was a travesty but at least the dreadful Zoe will be happy that she got her own way.

wessexgirl · 02/09/2008 22:05

Phew at Goldie still being in, but Jane Asher...

Katisha · 02/09/2008 22:10

Goldie and Sue "get" the music. JA still seems terified by it.

asicsgirl · 03/09/2008 09:24

ooh can't believe i missed the first half!!! we were watching 'gifted children' wot i recorded the night before

so what happened???? we only saw it from jane onwards, grr. i am LIVID that she is still in. who is she shagging to get this far???

sorry.

glad that aj has been forced to go home and be with his new baby, ffs. he would get pretty short shrift here. "lovely that you've had the baby darling, well done! hope me holding your hand helped! i'm off now, got to work on my burgeoning career as a tv "personality". you'll be ok though, you've done it 3 times already! see you in a week or two! bye!"

what was so dreadful about zoe? i liked her the last few weeks Confused

Bramshott · 03/09/2008 09:48

I was watching this last night thinking - JA has had botox surely, and probably Katie too - does this show that you can't be successful in a job where you have to communicate emotion with your face if your face is frozen!

I know Zoe, and she's very nice really, if a little mad!

ipanemagirl · 03/09/2008 10:12

Jane Asher - cannot bear her, agree with Zoe about the rictus smile and the actressyness and the lack of emotional connection etc

(Not that I could do any better!)

Katie D - Oh My Giddy Aunt - Has any woman ever had such a patronising smile? I mean she's very very pretty and able but that smile I can't bear it, with the closed eyes. I thought it was funny how everyone turned on her mentor though, he looked furious! and like he'd be off set anyminute for a proper diva strop. Even though I don't like Katie D - he did seem a little harsh on her.

Sad to See Alex J go although he should be home with his wife of course.

Goldie v Sue but Sue will win, she's fabulous and has more range than the Goldster.

During the duet that Simone conducted did anyone else think the soprano made a really bad bum note at the end?

asicsgirl · 03/09/2008 10:15

eeeuw yeah the soprano was very flat at the end!

ipanemagirl · 03/09/2008 10:19

simone must have been inwardly SO angry with her then!

AlBongo · 03/09/2008 10:20

Asicsgirl,

in my opinion both Zoe and Dominic had decided who they liked from the very start of the series and have paid insufficient attention to what the contestants have been doing - in every round, in relation to both the other judges and the overall standard of contestants, Dominic has marked Jane too highly and Zoe has marked Katie too harshly. But it has been the insidious way that Zoe has gone about it that has been particularly annoying, even when she has made complimentary statements regarding Katie's progress they weren't reflected in the scores and yesterday, to cap it all, she delivered her score of '6' with the words "because I know you could do a lot better" and grinned rather smugly when the audience booed her.

I'm quite certain that she is the type of person whose company I would hate if I had to endure it for longer than a second.

Bramshott,

I think you're right regarding JA but if you watch Katie on the news you'll see that she has a surprisingly mobile face and plenty of lines when she frowns so I very much doubt she has ever been near the botox .
It was even apparent yesterday during the scoring etc., I think it was just the nerves and the return of her fixed grin whilst conducting that may have made you think otherwise.

I agree though that people who do use botox should think again as it is a major barrier to communication.

ipanemagirl · 03/09/2008 10:21

Do you think Alex James thinks his hair flopping in his face is just adorable? I think he takes it a little too far.... He's not 10.

Also some of that filming is clearly at James's Cornwall cheese farm idyllic homestead isn't it?

theSuburbanDryad · 03/09/2008 10:21

Everyone seems to hate Katie's mentor!!

JA must be shagging someone to have got this far. She is farkin awful - unless it's because she knows Jennifer Sauders' husband who is famous conductor IIRC.

ipanemagirl · 03/09/2008 10:24

Albongo, I agree about how the conductors are being strongly swayed by who they like, although I think they've been pretty objective with Goldie and Sue.

Jane face is so frozen by the Toxic Tox that she's lost that thing that human beings use to connect with each other.....

i.e. facial expressions. Mad for an actress to do it!

But I agree Katie D's face moves loads and looks great. Her smile is nervous and irritating though!

Bramshott · 03/09/2008 10:25

Actually JA was surprisingly effective in the Tosca piece last night - but only because all the emotional bit she had to do was to look sad and stony-faced the whole time!

theSuburbanDryad · 03/09/2008 10:26

BTW - agree about the flat soprano at the end. Me and dh were both cringeing!! And I'm practically tone deaf thanks to too many loud parties in my mispent yoof!!

ipanemagirl · 03/09/2008 10:27

Is it Joanna Lumley's husband who's a conuctor?

JA's mother was an orchestral musician so someone told me.
I think J Saunders is married to Ade Edmondson who I would have like to see thrown off this prog straight after the unspeakably repulsive David Soul

(who, may I say..... I loved devotedly when I was very young!!)

theSuburbanDryad · 03/09/2008 10:28

Sorry - Joanna Lumley, not Jennifer Saunders! No idea where i got Saunders from!!

ipanemagirl · 03/09/2008 10:29

Is it only one week more? I LOVE this series, it is the bbc doing what it should do - warts and all.

But CLIVE - I could actually pretty much do without him....

ipanemagirl · 03/09/2008 10:31

Subdryad, you and my dh with the hearing! He is so much deafer than me that if we watch together I have to constantly ride the volume down and he rides it up - it's an endless war with me yelling 'turn it down!" and him yelling 'turn it up!"

AlBongo · 03/09/2008 10:37

Ipanemagirl,

I see why Katie's nervous smile can be irritating but I'm happy to forgive her that and find it kind of sweet . You know she's trying to remain calm on the surface but is in fact paddling furiously underneath.

When it comes to the judging I think it shows that Simone and Roger are professional conductors, and Zoe and Dominic aren't.

As for Katie's mentor, I think he meant well but was perhaps a little too focused, trying to fit a year's worth of teaching into a few weeks.
From what we saw Sue's mentor seems nice though.

ipanemagirl · 03/09/2008 10:43

Albongo, you're a kinder person than I am and of course, what they're doing is SO hard, it's incredible the kind of progress KD and AJ have made.

I agree about the conductor/judges. But the mus/judges reveal almost the childish side of conducting an orchestra, how the musicians use the power they have to give their total best or not depending on how much they respect the conductor.

And do you think that sometimes Roger's feedback is a bit odd and a little lame? Simone seems to know more exactly what she thinks.

Cut I watched L Bernstein conducting Jose Carreras in WWStory on youtube, the musicians just look so respectfully at him. I've found it so interesting watching amazing conductors since I've seen this series, it makes you realise how fabulous the greats are. Bernstein is great to watch and Karajan is stunning.
