anyone else watch it? thought it was quite good though a bit long. Also wish they had done more explaining for us unmusical types. Bradley Walsh makes me want to heave, so does Katie dereham - surely no-one can be that 'sweet' for real?!

PeaMcLean · 19/08/2008 22:23

It is very difficult to tell what they do sometimes! Partly cos the orchestra they're conducting on telly is very good and to a certain extent, will play well anyway. I know in the group I played with, you see an immediate difference when we had a top level proper conductor in, as opposed to our usual one. Difficult to really put my finger on why. But I do think less is more - the ones who seem to do less get more out of the orchestra, IYSWIM.

cyteen · 19/08/2008 22:26

Jane Asher looked like a mum-of-the-bride trying to get funky after one too many glasses of bucks fizz.

theSuburbanDryad · 19/08/2008 22:28

I think the Simpsons was v difficult, and i do think they're making it more difficult for Sue because of her high grade at piano. I know Alex James is a musician too but it's of a different sort than the formal skill needed to pass Grade exams. IYSWIM.

Tinker · 20/08/2008 00:53

I love this. Can't stand Alex James - wash your fucking hair and stop going on about your fucking cheese. You are so dull. You never have anything interesting to say.

JA is very irritating. How much botox? Another example of Paul McCartney being attracted to very humourless women who take themselves seriously all of the time.

I'm gunning for a Goldie v SP final.

bagsforlife · 20/08/2008 08:36

Who is Goldie? He was v.g. Agree re Alex James, always find it hilarious how 'edgy' popstars always turn back into their middle class alter egos in the end. Sue Perkins brilliant. She should win def.

asicsgirl · 20/08/2008 10:26

it's all a bit of a mystery innit. i too thought JA was embarrassing. totally agree re dancing not conducting. dp said he thought she had watched (and copied) a video of bernstein conducting it. and he says bernstein was terrible conductor! the judges did say 'drop the choreography' and told her she was basically faking it. but didn't really penalise her too much in the scoring

sue was magnificent of course. i do want clive james to shut up and let her be funny.

thought katie derham won prize for best dress. much as i dislike her! her mentor is terrifying tho'

there is something really worrying about bradley walsh... gives me the creeps.

yes tinker goldie vs sue!! bring it on

hannahsaunt · 20/08/2008 11:19

JA was just awful! Has really turned me off her.

Thought Judge Dominic was horribly rude to BW which was totally uncalled for - really let the standard down which was disappointing. BW was the clearest with the beat of any of them so glad he was reprieved to learn a bit more.

Goldie is just fab - loved what he did.

V glad DS has gone - he always seemed like the sore thumb of the personality group. So groomed!

Loved, loved, loved SP.

Katisha · 20/08/2008 11:41

Yes that judge on the end is a bit of a loose cannon - he gets into awful knots, like when he was smarming about JA being so beautiful in the first programme. The other judges seems a lot more incisive IMO.

JA has definitely been found out for acting how she thinks it should look, instead of having any actual sense of the structure and direction of the music. Which is where Sue and Goldie should triumph.

That Barber would have been a pig to conduct though - I thought David Soul got the raw deal there.

Bramshott · 20/08/2008 13:35

Goldie was great, Sue was great - the others are pants! Great show!

Who are Dominic and Simone though (judges)? I can't get the website to work. I'm guessing that she's conductor, and he's a player (with a slight chip on his shoulder about conductors).

asicsgirl · 20/08/2008 14:08

simone is the musical director of a big shebang in hamburg. can't remember what exactly. opera company.

dominic is lead double bass in another famous orchestra, can't remember that either! and is alan davies' long lost twin.

[not being very helpful emoticon]

sphil · 20/08/2008 21:14

Thought SP was miles better than the rest. Pmsl when she said 'Is that an offer or a suggestion?' to that judge who was talking about rose petal baths .

Jane Asher - like someone had wound up a big key in her back. Had to put a cushion over my face when she did the jerky punching thing.

Not that I could do any better you understand..

PeaMcLean · 20/08/2008 21:15

Dominic's BBC National Orchestra of wales I think they said...

AlBongo · 20/08/2008 21:16

The criticism of Katie Derham following the first episode was a bit unfair. She said then that she smiles too much when nervous, which is hardly the most offensive way of dealing with nerves. (Alex James shakes like a leaf, which is kind of sweet, and Bradley Walsh just ends up being obnoxious). I think she's lovely and was much much better in the second episode so I hope we get the chance to follow her continued improvement.

Must admit that I wasn't convinced by Jane Asher, even last week when some of the judges seemed impressed, but would like to see Mr Walsh leave next.

Also, it's a shame they didn't stick with the same format throughout the series as the rehearsing and behind-the-scenes stuff is the interesting bit.

maidamess · 20/08/2008 21:18

Well, I'm going to admit to 2 maestro crushes. Bradley and Goldie. Yes, yes laugh all you want.

wessexgirl · 20/08/2008 21:21

I agree with AlBongo; I was disappointed with the minimal coverage of their continued learning process last night. I don't see why they couldn't stick with the hour and a half format they opened with and show us a bit more of that.

asicsgirl · 21/08/2008 11:16

yes agree too. cut the clive anderson bits and show us more behind-the-scenes.given that none of us understand what conductors do and whether the celebs are any good or not, lol.

we did a big 'aaarrgh look!' in the first episode as the guy who was leading one of the workshops - tim steiner (the one who said that most intelligent 10 year olds could do the clapping task that none of the celebs could, lol) - was at uni with dp. ho ho.

squeaver · 26/08/2008 21:18

I am in LOVE with Alex James. Laugh away!

Oh God look at Jane Asher's fright frock

wessexgirl · 26/08/2008 21:36

Surely Bradley Walsh is going tonight.

They gave him the Tippett on purpose, I reckon.

Sue Perkins was fab again.

wessexgirl · 26/08/2008 22:52

Ha, he went.

NOBODY else watching??

theSuburbanDryad · 26/08/2008 22:57

Oh noes!! I'm gutted i missed it tonight! Stupid Bank Holiday made me forget it was on and dh made me watch Ghostworld.

Who went?

wessexgirl · 27/08/2008 00:15

Bradley Walsh went. Did a rubbish Tippett.

Surely Jane Asher will be next.
