I want to foster guide dog pups too but didn't think I could let them go; I think I could now knowing just how vital they are for companionship as well as help

falcon · 19/08/2008 22:02

That was my favourite episode so far of this series, and not just because it was set in Glasgow.

geordieminx · 19/08/2008 22:03

dp is annoyed that he didnt help the old lady with the beard. He wants us to adopt her - we only live about 20 minutes away.

GivePeasAChance · 19/08/2008 22:03

Agree the like you anyway bit was lovely. He was lovely.

WumphreyCushion · 19/08/2008 22:04

hf128219 · 19/08/2008 22:05

Brilliant tonight!

expatinscotland · 19/08/2008 22:06

oh, i could let them go, LF!

can you imagine going through puppyhood over and over ad infinitum?

we saw an older couple with a guide dog in training last week in a tourist village.

she had a harness that said she was training and their car had all these dog charity stickers like, 'dog obedience training, because a dog is for life' and P.A.W.S and such.

giraffescantdancethetango · 19/08/2008 22:10

my eyes are still teary.

i always volunteer apart from this past year I have done no voluntary work, apart from being accepted for childline training I havent been able to get suitable dates (cos of work) but tomorrow I am phoning to try and get more dates for volunteer training.

notnowbernard · 19/08/2008 22:11

First episode of this series I've seen

Blubbing bigtime (dp too)

Truly great reality TV

Alambil · 19/08/2008 22:11

LOL Expat! I just couldn't imagine doing all that hard work and then none of the on-going reward!

I think I'd manage though if I had a more dog-friendly job

aimsmum does he? cool. i really loved the ethos of the place when i went for my interview and info meeting. they keep sending me dates but i just couldnt fit it around work, but now i have a new job so HOPEFULLY i could. i really want to. my friends been in there 10 years. im just worried they think i dont really want to do it cos i kept rejecting training dates but my work couldnt not let me in to do it, was no way. but ill call tomorrow and explain the situation

I have a guide dog pup, our first one. You do get a lot of support but it isn't like having a pet dog, there are a lot of rules and a lot of things you can't do simply because of the life he is going to lead after his year with us.

You just have to view it as, if you teach them bad habits what happens when he goes to a blind owner.

It is quite a lot of hard work, especially as everyone seems to be a dog expert! When you see someone with a dog on a blue lead with "guide dog" printed on it or a white lead with the yellow flash please don't go to the dog as it is being trained every time it goes out on the lead. Go up to the puppy walker and ask if you want to pet him, let them get the chance to do some obedience with him or if not the puppy walker can say no - if they are walking along leave them be. Thank you

You cannot leave the dog alone for more than 3 hours and they prefer if someone is at home with the dog rather than taking it to work as remember, it is a small pup. You don't get the blue training coat until they are 6 months old and they don't get the harness until they go to the proper training centres, after 14 months old, as they are a bit heavy on young bones!

wessexgirl · 19/08/2008 22:58

I was filling up 5 minutes in to this weeks episode. Every week I say I'm going to do some voluntary work, one day I might.

Fimbo · 19/08/2008 23:15

Missed it and dh is watching something else now. Was the £225k for the guide dog training then?
