I like her - she actually seems like a really lovely person......be interesting to see how she gets on

I do think it highlights charities we would never have known about which is a good thing.

pattymc · 12/08/2008 21:58

but look at what she has done - does it matter how much she has? surely worth the tv reality exploitation if these people benefit.

FAQ · 12/08/2008 22:00

did I just hear that bloke on the ad for next weeks programme say he was going to give them £225k???

OP posts:
poshtottie · 12/08/2008 22:01

FAQ yes he did

FAQ · 12/08/2008 22:02

if you look at the times rich list, it often (well it used to anyhow) break down slightly how the thought their money was made up, the vact majority of those their money was tied up in business/property etc etc - not just sat in a bank.

GivePeasAChance · 12/08/2008 22:03

It is about 0.6% of what she is worth and when you are talking about 10m it is tight ! Sorry but it certainly doesn't deserve a gushing TV programme about it. There are many people who raise money for great causes with no gushing or recognition. It is another example of the undeserved respect we give to people who are put on a pedestal because they are worth a lot of money.

FAQ · 12/08/2008 22:05

But GPAC - when H and I were together we worked out that between us we were "worth" nearly £150k.........at that point we had about £20 in our bank account

posh - I thought that's what I heard but as I'd already started typing another post here on MN I thought I must have imagined it!!!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 12/08/2008 22:06

I disagree, GPC. We have no idea how liquid her assets are. There are many who give nothing. They're under no obligation to, no one is.

I don't feel the show puts these givers on pedestals at all and I'm glad these smaller organisations who are really struggling get some much-needed help.

I've gotten packages and gifts from people on here. I can't thank those people enough.

I don't know what motivated them to do that, and it's not my business. I hope they are blessed for it. I hope it made them feel as good as it did me.

I've also given to others on here.

It doesn't matter what walk of life a person comes from.

Kindness comes in all forms.

GivePeasAChance · 12/08/2008 22:10

Kindness on the tv fills me with suspision. The altruistic elements to a charity donation are eliminated for me when done on tv. Self serving.

HOwever, the fact is that people HAVE benefited, so it is a great situation for the participant - people can't really criticise because they gave money and people benefited? Well that sucks !

The PR alone is worth more than £ 65k for her.

quickerthistimeplease · 12/08/2008 22:11

I did think maybe she could give a bit more but then I bet she does now after the show. Think it highlights really well all these tiny little charities that exist on hardly anything. I give little bits but it all seems to be to the 'big names' when in fact the little local ones prob need it a lot more.
Def makes me want to go out and volunteer!

pattymc · 12/08/2008 22:13

but at no point does the programme ask the viewer to give these people respect, I respect her for her business but as for the moeny she has given, it's made a huge impact on charities that would not have received this money had it not been for the tv programme. surely this is worth the gush - and we can choose whether to watch it or not and to respect the secret millionaire or not

FAQ · 12/08/2008 22:16

just looking at the Matha's Oasis website - their "All about me" programme looks fabulous!

OP posts:
TurkeyLurkey · 12/08/2008 22:17

Her house was a bit bling though.

The consensus in the turkey house was 20k was tight, why not 30 or 50k?

Remotew · 12/08/2008 22:22

I know she made all her money in IT but I didn't hear them mention the name of her company for publicity. Do they usually?

Other millionaires in the series have given money to individuals who are kind to them even in the face of poverty, which is always touching.

I enjoy the programme. I don't see anything wrong with it OK, these things are always edited for the viewers but its is a two way street. The millionaires learn something about values other than money and it may inspire them to be more charitable with their wealth.

biscuitsmustbedunkedintea · 14/08/2008 16:12

Do you think the projects given the money sometimes think "Thanks a lot for the money, but actually you continuing to give up a few hours of your time voluntarily each week would make more of a difference"?

MaureenMLove · 14/08/2008 16:19

The trailer for next weeks, shows the millionnaire giving a cheque for £100K! That one should be good.

candyfluff · 14/08/2008 18:32

i watched this too and did also think she could of given more

How did she make her money?

candyfluff · 15/08/2008 15:20

she has her own i.t business i think

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 15/08/2008 15:26

agree with others it doesnt matter how much they are giving. they are giving up their own time and money to help others. the amount they give is irrelevant.

no one is there forcing them to give thier own money away.

DrNortherner · 19/08/2008 16:27

I can't wait for tonights episode. I love this programme.

falcon · 19/08/2008 16:42

I'm looking forward to it too, particuarly as it's involved with a cause I'm passionate about and is set in Glasgow.

cocolepew · 19/08/2008 16:49

Who do the people being filmed think the millionaire is, do they has a false story to why the are being filmed?

FAQ · 19/08/2008 16:51

yes they're usually "doing a documentary" about going back to work after having children, volunteering etc etc.
